A nostalgic masterpiece

I remember reading this one when I was younger and being so obsessed! I love how romance isn't actually the focus of the story (even though I ended very sad that my, and, certainly, most reader's ship didn't sail) and, even though many people say that the ending is a little lackluster... I kinda get it. It's intended for a younger audience, after all.
I love knowing that, in 2009, we had a not-so-shoujo shoujo manga with such good and addictive plot. Certainly this one helped to open the door to another kind of stories for girls.

Interesting cult-like mystery with lackluster ending

I used to love this series in middle school (it gives off a freeform/CW type air). I still love it, and I think there are really good aspects and not so great aspects.
The best part of the series surrounds "King Time." They made it really feel like a cult, especially with the attitude of Arisa's best friend. I loved the cell-phone aspects of it, it felt ahead of its time and could easily be translated to current day with smartphones. The mystery involving the king was really fun and mystery scenes kept me very engaged. Tsubasa was a great lead character, and almost all of the other characters in the story had a sense of moral grey areas, which is always super fun.
The ending kinda went off the rails and the hospital scene with the King was just, it was just frustrating. The explanation for the king's actions was good but convoluted as well so expect to be confused.
If I had the option to change the series I would change quite a bit, but I still love this series. I would especially recommend it to middle schoolers and early high schoolers because it has many elements that I enjoyed at that age.

I loved this manga! Honestly, it's my first shoujo manga. It's full of mystery and it's just soooo cute! I would totally recommend this to anyone who likes a bit of tragedy and all that stuff. The art is totally cute! At some parts, I got angry at Arisa.
I don't really understand why everyone is complaining how this manga has no romance at all. Sorry for my language, but how the f*** do you not find this amusing only because it doesn't have no goddamn romance at all? Is romance you only care about? It's totally annoying seeing every single manga containing sex and romance b*******. Just enjoy the manga, without the romance. If you can't, get out. You've seen the tags before, haven't you? Then no need to be a b**** at all for this.
Thankfully, the tag which was put by some stupid d*psh*t was removed and on one else is going to bother saying "it's not romance" again.
(It's not like I'm saying this because I liked it, it's just it gets annoying sometimes.)

I thought Manabe and Tsubasa would make a cute couple because how nicely they were getting along. Especially the part where Manabe says, "Don't you dare die on me!" He is such a tsudnere!

When I first read this, I have to say I found it quite gripping, and was continually shocked that such a gritty shojo plot ran in, of all things, Nakayoshi (targeted to elementary school kids). In a lot of ways it seemed like the shojo Mirai Nikki, although it's not nearly as graphic.
But in the end, perhaps because it IS a Nakayoshi title, the story never fully embraces it's dark potential and goes the redemption route instead…. It's worth reading the once if you like shojo horror/psychological stories that aren't gory, but you may be disappointed by
I usually enjoy reading a series again a few years later to revisit the characters, but reading Arisa a second time didn't do much for me. I guess when you already know what's going to happen in a thriller, it loses it's, well, thrills…
But I respect the fact that the main character, Tsubasa, was not given a love interest. In a lot of ways, she's just "too cool" for it.

the character's quick forgiveness of each other and finding out that past incidents were highly exaggerated, such as various characters implied to have been murdered were simply living elsewhere in fear...

At the surface, this shoujo seems revolutionary. It actually has a plot beyond that of simple romance and pettiness--it tries to tackle some dark themes, and manages to make it entertaining. However, this manga doesn't stand to logic or depth, because so much of the manga is just SO unlikely.
Nonetheless, it was an interesting read.

I can finally say I finished this manga. It's been on my hold list for years as I got sick of the cliff hangers and suspense and having to wait months before finding out what happens. It has been a tough road of suspense and drama and it really tugs at the heart strings. I can't say I liked the ending, but at least it felt complete. I want to keep my rating at a 10 because it's been a great manga, but it is definitely confusing. Parts of it still do not make as much sense to me, but overall, not a bad read.

Why are so many tagged as when there's not romance. Just because a character in a story has a crush on another character, this doesn't automatically qualify the story as romance. To me, romance is when one character actually admits their feelings to another which in turn leads to a romantic moment. When your girlfriend tells you she wants to have a romantic evening, it doesn't mean she wants to go out and solve a mystery together. It means she wants to spend time just the two of you while showing your affection for each other. The manga publishing industry needs to re-examine what it classifies as romance. They need a new classification for stories about members of the opposite sex that fall short of romance. Call it almost romance or something like that.

The story overall doesn't have much romance, but there is some here and there. The mystery and action itself is entertaining. Even when you know who the KING is, its difficult to understand their motives, goal, and plan. And though Tsubasa isn't the smartest, she makes progress following her instincts and is brave enough to face the cruel KING, is determined enough to protect others.

Other people have covered the absolutely unbelievable plot twists and the thoroughly psychotic characters, so I'll add my biggest complaint. Not only is it rough on my wallet, as a person buying the manga as it's released in North America, but the length of this series almost wrecks it. The story is really interesting and enjoyable for a few volumes, but at some point the author starts seeming to just be throwing in really stupid twists and turns to the plot just to keep the series going a little longer. This makes it get really melodramatic and a bit cliche and predictable as the series goes on. It would have been better if it was shorter.

Overall,
This manga wasn't my best read, neither was it bad either.
With that, in my opinion, it does not deserve being in the "romantic" category.
The only "romance" that I saw within this manga was the little moments between Arisa's boyfriend
Asides from that, there was a lot of psychological elements, but they were extremely too unrealistic to believe.
But, when the characters were in that state, the mangaka did a pretty good job emphasizing that. (Looking madly crazy).
But the drawing style is really deceiving at first glance.
At first glance I would think that it is some cutesy manga.
Of course, it is not.
It is a manga filled with psychotic antagonists driven by a horrible past, jealousy, obsession, and selfishness and an adamant protagonist trying to solve the mystery of why her sister fell into a state of a coma.

I was really anticipating on some romantic development between Manabe and Tsubasa--or at least a hint of "something," but in the end there wasn't.
It was just a make-up-with-each-other-and-get-together moment with Arisa and Tsubasa.
