My favorite yaoi

I read the oneshot about yashiro years ago before this series about him came out and it stuck with me as one of my favorite stories. His character was one that I could not forget, and truly wanted to find his own version of a "happy ending". So when this series came out I was so excited, and it has not disappointed. The story is put together perfectly and the characters are believable, a truly touching and amazing creation is what you will find in the pages of this story.

This manga is targeted at a mature audience, but I would definitely place it really high on an "Introduction to Great Yaoi" list, if not #1. Yoneda-sensei sure knows how to tug at the readers' heartstrings. And set our hormones on fire. Everything blends together so seamlessly in this manga. The intrigue, yakuza culture, the rigid hierarchy and the relationships between members, so on. And of course at the centre of it all is our lovely Yashiro and Doumeki.

Something was missing for me. It featured all the elements I love in a good yaoi: Smut, dark secrets, abuse, neglect, and everything that twists a person into something ugly and pitiful, but it just didn't click with me, unfortunately.

One of the best (imho)

This is one of the best yaoi mangas I've read, and I've read a LOT. It's very unique in its entirety, ofc if you break it down into parts you can find others with a single aspect but none that offer up such an amazing blend of sub-genres; yakuza, childhood trauma, rape, abuse, learning to love, severe masochism, rising to power, just so much awesomeness <3(if you disagree please link me to others like it because I'd love to read them!) **Fair warning, this manga is pretty 'dark' so if you're looking for a happy ending, warm and fuzzy feeling, cheerful yaoi manga you've stumbled upon the exact opposite** but, I think it's really worth reading even if this isn't your normal cup if tea. My only regret when it comes to this manga is that I found it so 'early' and it doesn't seem to get updated very often; I'm very impatient and waiting for more chapters to be released is so hard! I've already reread it four times now.

I've been reading this manga for years. I just hope I don't die before it's finished. I love this story so much. Yashiro is my son! He's so strong and beautiful, he deserves happiness and love and everything good. I love Doumeki as well, he loves Yashiro, everything he is. He's willing to anything, he's so special. This heavy feeling won't leave me.

I can't stand to read unfinished mangas because at the end I'll want more and will have to wait and all tension and interest may fade with the months and years of waiting.

Am at vol 4 ch 17 atm.

This title builds up a good set of characters over time and develops depth for at least the two main protagonists. The tension between them, that they're partly unaware off yet, kept me reading and I'm so curious when, how - or if at all - it'll resolve.
I'm no fan of yakuza stories at all but the chars keep this one rolling.

Beyond Words

After reading this for three years and continuing, i need to re-explain my adoration for it. Oh Saezuru. How this manga is so fucking fantastic. It's the best yaoi manga that i've ever read in my entire life and will remain to be my favourite for years to come. The story deals with the yakuza and mafia lifestyle which is full of action and suspense keeping you on your toes, wondering what's going to happen next. There is so much depth to the story and the characters are all well thought out by yoneda-sensei. Everything is extremely gritty, dark, heartbreaking, and full of angst.

Yashiro is such a complex character that has so many issues because of his tragic past. He's the kind of person you can feel pity for, yet can also be looked down upon because of his actions. Personally, i think he's brilliant. He has developed a lot over the series and seeing that change occur is really beautiful, especially his relationship with doumeki. Doumeki is a great character, not only because of his loyalty but because he is equally as flawed as yashiro. These two are so broken and work together in such a way, that it's honestly one of the most memorable relationships i have ever come across. You can definitely tell that these two main characters, do in fact, have some kind of strong connection towards each other.

The atmosphere is so electric and intense between them that it literally makes my heart pound out of my chest. I get such a rush of adrenaline. The symbolism and the art is also magnificent. Yoneda-sensei knows how to draw such amazing expressions and backgrounds that are just beautiful to look at. I can not explain my love for this series. Just read it. It's truly a gem.

It's been two years since I've read this manga, right around when DP's releases had stopped.
Recently, I have decided to catch up. And I was just mesmerized, to the point where I've reread it fully the next day.

I'll put this in spoilers, just in case.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I've seen someone compare this to the Finder series, and as much as I love it, this comparison doesn't do justice to the complexity and portrayal of the characters in Saezuru.
I've also seen some completely dismiss this manga on the grounds of the "uke" sleeping around while the "seme" just watches. The problem with this comparison, is that there's so much more to these characters than just their roles in sex.

Yashiro, a damaged, long suffering person whose mind and body were twisted by years of rape and abuse, has found satisfaction (not happiness nor peace) in his position in the yakuza. The only person he's ever loved, does not love him back
.
His experiences, instead of repelling him from it, had made his body depend on sex.
That's what he knows and enjoys. That's how he fills the void he doesn't let himself feel.

Doumeki, who is tormented by guilt over not being able to protect his sister, then by letting Yashiro get hurt also cannot be defined by merely wanting to put his dick in a particular guy's ass.
He's scared he will become like his father. He's scared he'll hurt Yashiro even more, or let him get hurt. He's forced to witness how the men Yashiro has sex with hurt him, once again being unable to do anything, because that's what Yashiro wants and enjoys, a man who doesn't understand nor indulge in "regular sex", let alone relationships.

Doumeki is first attracted by Yashiro's beauty, but develops strong respect for the man who's in charge of a Yakuza branch. Despite his promiscuity and sexual preferences, Yashiro is well respected by his loyal subordinates, for his wits and unforgiving nature. He clearly knows what he's doing. Both men gradually open up to each other, which is amazing to behold.

And that brings me to another point - the plot behind the yaoi (which is hot beyond belief).
I'm unfamiliar with how the yakuza works, but this manga gives me the feeling of realism, despite some far-fetched looking points like all the tolerance for gay sex and bonding. Maybe they're like the greeks? I can't even begin to guess.
Either way, the conspiracy and battling for domination plot lines are very compelling and I enjoy them a lot.

Besides wanting Yashiro and Doumeki's relationship to advance further (although I'm not sure how plausible that is), I also really want to know how things will develop with the rest of the story.

I don't think this will end well, and I don't think such a story should, but oh, how I want it to.
I want Yashiro and Doumeki to experience happiness and peace, but is it really possible in their world? I hope for it, so so much.

I don't remember investing myself in this way, let alone a yaoi manga.
Yoneda Kou sure knows how to spin a web of intrigue. I find myself longing to read more,
to experience more of this story.
I find myself hoping for the best, even though I'm quite sure it's impossible.
Seldom do I feel such longing towards anything and I can't wait to read more.

I'd like to add, that the side characters are very interesting as well,
but I think one has to experience them in context.
Same goes for the wonderful humor that is thrown in quite often. From the lewd jokes to the expressions. I went from heartache to laughter within minutes.

Emotional build-up is great.

The one shot prologue was amazing. I am not even into yaoi but it has really touched me. The emotional thread is wonderfully woven. Another reviewer was right, beneath all those 'filth' and darkness is tenderness.
