I stayed in Belem at a hotel by the river. They had an amazing complimentary breakfast there. I would eat and eat in the morning and then sleep and watch direct tv and read manga in the hotel room all day while my father and mother went sight seeing and visiting some old friends. After a few days of living heavenly like that my parents made me go places with them. Didn't regret it that much the city of Belem is pretty nice but as is the case with a lot of countries all around the world (including the us) as soon as you leave the city and drive to the outskirts the disparity between rich and poor is clearly great.

Holy cow, this thing’s turned into a monster! O_o

I'm tempted to call you tofuqueen no baa chan. Hahaha.

Errrr my Japanese is pretty minimal, but wouldn’t that be calling me “Tofuqueen’s grandmother”?? bigrazz

I can't believe I would meet someone here who went to college twice. Didn't get enough the first time eh.

Heh…not…exactly… >_> More like, the first time I didn’t study something that would help me get a good job, so after a while I went back.

Manga Mommies Unite!!!

Yay, I’m not the only one!! biggrin
And for the two added categories:
Occupation: Mom, church secretary, horse stall cleaner, and church nursery attendant (and no, I’m not a member of either church I’m employed by, or any church at all for that matter)
Major: First time, History w/English minor; second time, Accounting

Hmmm...Are you gonna introduce your kids to manga? If so will you read manga together?

Already have, we actually started reading manga at the same time via a random volume of Ranma ½ from the public library. My boys are 11; they read mostly shounen stuff (One Piece, Case Closed, etc.) but they’re also enjoying Skip Beat! a lot. Honestly, I don’t see what’s odd about reading the same things your kids read (unless it’s the really sexual stuff, that would be kind of…creepy….). It’s not like we all sit together on the couch & read the same book at the same time anymore, like we did with that first volume of Ranma 1/2 when the boys weren’t reading that well yet, but we do all read a lot of the same books.

Tests...ugh...they can be sooo far off. When I went to college (the first time), they tried to place me in a calculus class my first semester because of my SAT score - even though the highest math I'd had in high school was Algebra II, and I took no math at all senior year. I would have failed calculus miserably (math is NOT my thing!). I'm just a "good test taker", which makes it look like I know more than I do.

I think "baachan" is a friendly form of adress for a mother, while
"baaasan" is a polite one.

baa= an honorific type thing that's used for old people.
chan= an honorific that's usually reserved for girls.

Put them together and you get something to the effect of Old Lady.

I got this from Naruto when he calls Tsunade: tsunade no baa chan.

So hence Tofuqueen no baa chan. I was just kidding about all of this btw. But I think what I said is correct in terms of use. bigrazz Someone who knows japanese well correct me if I am wrong please? I am still learning dead

I feel like I'm showing off my ignorance here, I'm sure I'll mess something up. (>_>)

My understanding is: the full term is "oba-san/chan" for "auntie/older woman" and "obaa-san/chan" for grandmother/OLD woman; "san" is more polite/formal while "chan" is more informal/affectionate; and "baa" is short form/informal/slang/whatever.

"No" in Japanese is possessive, so while "watashi" = "me/I", "watashi no" = "my/mine", etc.

Therefore "tofuqueen no baachan" would be "tofuqueen's grandmother". bigrazz

I have heard that Naruto is about the worst anime to learn Japanese from, as he uses language that ranges from weird to just plain wrong. I don't know that much Japanese & have never watched it so I can't say if that's true or not, but from this example I'd tend to agree that Naruto's not the place to learn the language.

hiro no baka- does not mean hiro's idiot
There are more than one ways of using a word.
It basically means "the" although you can't really translate it. So tsunade no baachan means tsunade the old lady/grandmother or granny tsunade (no matter how bad his japanese is they would never let naruto say something that makes absolutely no sense like tsunade's grandmother- think about it if you had an english show and the character had bad grammer you still wouldn't make him call a person their own grandmother. Would you?)
So in conclusion tofuqueen no baa chan means - old lady tofuqueen. End of story I am positive now. Unless a japanese person who speaks really good english tells me otherwise. Yep i'm that confident.Hehe.*Breaks out into hysterical laughter mwahahahahahaha

Hmmmmmm could it possibly be "ano" rather than "no"? "Ano" roughly translates to "that", which would actually make sense... roll eyes

As far as I know, and I did check this in several dictionaries last night, "no" doesn't really translate to "the" or "that" or anything similar. I'm certainly not an expert, but I do have a fairly good ear for when something just sounds wrong, and using "no" like that just sounds wrong.

What's an abi? Sounds like high education, however, I threw it into dictionary.com and came up with: Absolute Breadth Index, Application Binary Interface, Abilene Regional Airport, and acquired brain injury. I hope education didn't cause you brain damage. smile wink grin

edit: Wikipedia claims "abi is another name for GOD", this is getting more interesting all the time...
