Lately I've realized that I have a thing for princely, chivalrous crossdressing girls. I took Utena of Revolutionary Girl Utena as my role model when I first read her story at eleven. More recently, my obsession has grown to include the legendary Oscar of Rose of Versailles and Emil of Joan. Almost as nice are Julius of Orpheus no Mado, Saint Juste of Oniisama e, and Claudine.

Are there any other characters in manga that are chivalrous, princely, and pants-wearing despite their reproductive organs? I like historical shoujo-ai best, but I'll take suggestions from any genre.

Amakusa 1637 was like that, if I recall. I think that series has shoujo-ai, shounen-ai, and romance tags. laugh Complicated, but not scanlated very far.
Oops, wait. Is it okay if she's wearing hakama instead of pants?

And the heroine from Ai wo Utau yori Ore ni Oborero started out like this, but her decline was swift. no

I think there are more that I can't remember, but I'm sure someone else will remember them. eyes

Will no one scanlate Takahashi Miyuki?! T_T

Definitely Shitsurakuen. It's an awesome series (often compared to RGU) so much that although I hate GL, I'm just dying for new chapters. laugh *slapsself*

Edit.

1/2 Ouji , heroine who of course is very handsome, charming and of course very princely. laugh

Houou Gakuen Misoragumi, the heroine's not exactly strong or smart, but she's definitely flirty around girls (but only chapter 1 so far... -_-).

Saver, is strong, beautiful and smart. But not very princely as she has a very serious personality.

He Dedicated to Roses and Boy of the Female Wolf sound like ones, not sure since I haven't read them yet.

maybe Savage Garden and Bara no Maria as they seem to be somewhat, as they have tough heriones but it's not shoujo-ai.

and perhaps Sengoku Strays? Which has a very cool and kick-a*s heroine who's a master in Kendo (which I think sounds very similar to Amakusa 1637 *adds it to wish list*), doesn't wear pants though...

definately try Vanilla Ice - its not just that the main girl character looks like a guy, the personality is what most would class as 'princely'.

Thanks for all the suggestions! =) You know, the crossdressing bit isn't totally necessary - if the girl is going around being chivalrous in a seifuku or a sundress, that's just dandy.

The main girl of Kaichou wa Maid-sama! is quite chivalrous. She takes it upon herself to protect all the girls of her school from the douchebaggery of the guys, and she does it well.

YES! These girls are HOT!

Hana no Asukagumi! has a young butch girl who I would totally fall for if I was still a teen. (Can't fall for her now; that would be illegal. bigrazz )

I think you'll find many short-haired, boyish or at least boyish-looking girls in Yamaji Ebine's yuri stories. God they're hot.

most of the ones I can think of are already listed (Shitsurakuen, 1/2 Prince, Saver, etc). so I will just list 2 more:

Oresama Teacher - main heroine is definitely very chivalrous and crossdresses sometimes.
Umi no Kishidan - this one fits, a crossdressing, kick-ass heroine in a historical setting. But again, there's no yuri here.

Ribbon no Kishi is said to be the pioneer of what you are looking for.

I also second Red Lion, I really like the main heroine. Also, in Glass Mask there is an arc where Maya plays the role of a princely character and one of her best friends fits this description. The two girls in Pieta also seem princely to me for some reason. It's shoujo-ai. smile

Now that I think about it, I also really like these type of characters.

Definitely the heroine in 1/2 Prince, as others have suggested. Heck, her in-game name is "Prince." (And there's a little bit of shoujo-ai for you as well.)

If she doesn't have to be a cross-dresser, and if you don't mind shoujo, then I also suggest Haruna from Monkey High. Haruna is portrayed the way most bishonen are: attractive, cool, smart, and in charge. And she gets plenty of moments where she gets to be heroic (in a slice of life sort of way) for her boyfriend.

There's this strange version of Romeo and Juliet out there: Romeo X Juliet. Juliet is a defender of the people and fights in addition to playing her traditional role in the play.

For this adaptation I suggest the anime rather than the manga. It's pretty awesome!
