editwell award of type on title, spell check didn't catch it >> "Tragedy" Mod change ^^?
Looking for something with a good story, nice art. Bit of drama, characters with a tragic past is a plus. Not nessarly shounen/senin but in my experience these type of stories often are. Can be funny or whatever but I want the story to have a serious side too. Don't mind nudity but not really looking for hentai.
Examples
Kagerou Nostalgia
07-Ghost
Chrno Crusade
World Embryo
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden
Do not suggest anything hugely popular: ie Naruto, bleach, one piece. I've tried them and it's not what I'm looking for (tho bleach was ok for a while)
Thankyou!
This week's favorites:
ççççççç[Ô.Ô] tsutopodus© will eat your manga and steal your cats!
A few you might try
Berserk - It's popular, but I wouldn't lump it in with the Bleach, Naruto and One Piece group. As far as tragic, fantasy type seinen goes, it's pretty much the reigning king.
Shin Angyo Onshi - Completed. Shares some similarities with Berserk. More humor in this though, and possibly more tragedy, or maybe it's just spaced farther apart whereas the bulk of Berserk's tragedy happens in one fell swoop.
Claymore - More shounenified kinda stuff, but decent. Edging a bit closer to the Bleach, Naruto type of popularity though.
Watashi no Messiah - Completed. It suffers a bit, in my opinion, from a pacing problem and awkward comedy. I have mixed feelings about this one, but it's fairly enjoyable.
Monster Collection - Completed. Not tragedy and the drama is really light, but for a fun adventure fantasy this a really good read. Entertaining, good art, story and characters. It's pretty short and fast paced.
There's more I'm sure, but that's stuff I finished recently or just popped into mind.

saver maybe?
I highly second Shin Angyo Onshi, even if my first choice would be Ares (if you don't mind manwha). Excellent story, some dramas, some little jokes and all the tragic past you can ask for. Art is really particular, I love it, but I can understand that it's not something everyone could appreciate.
If you want good drama story you can try Shirodaira Kyou and Toume Kei, two of my fav mangaka in terms of storytelling. Try something like Hitsuji no Uta, Kurogane, Spiral or Vampire Juujikai.
Or something little different that you can try:
Eternal Sabbath
Kurozuka
D-Ash
They are not unknown but neither so famous so I hope they can fit your request.
What I like in Trivial Pursuit style. Pick your category:

Thanks all!
Things I had tried before:
Basara - not bad, preferred 7 seeds though
Ares - Started last night, going to get more volumes
Spiral - love it
Eternal Sabbath - have read vol 1-2 will probably get others
Beserk & Shin Angyo Onshi - could never really get into these but will give them another shot. Force myself to finish the volume before I decide
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm sure I'll find something in there 🙂
(feel free to add more)
Tsuto wins 🙂 , really liking HandxRed and Tegami Bachi. Ares too (which I picked up off another topic but was also recommended here).
The others in general are not bad but they haven't grabbed me yet (they still might). I only really read the first chapter of them but will try to finish the volume before I judge.
Thanks very much this has been very successful 🙂
(don't hesitate to recommend more, you can never have too much manga)
Thanks again!

Nabari no oh Everyone has a depressing past in this one. It has its funny moments. Though it may sound like a naruto clone, it is considerably darker than one. I enjoyed 07 ghost too and i liked this one.
Stuff that also fits the description but may not be your cup of tea
but if you are in an adventurous mood:
why you might not like it: Realistic looking, historical
Dangu takes place in a fictional historic/fantasy world where certain people bestowed with abilities are hunted and killed. You basically watch the protagonist grow up in a training camp. The action is great, and the story is interesting. May be a bit too realistic though. A bit gritty. (art is more realistic)
why you might not like it: in more of a modern than fantasy setting
Darker than Black (i recommend the anime). Takes place in a sort of neo-japan where people with abilities are carefully tracked and controlled before they grow out of hand. Main character has a slew of baggage. very interesting.
why you might not like it: more historical, mature
Blade Of The Immortal Main character is cursed after he killed a lot of men that did terrible things to his mentally disabled sister. Now he can't die until he repents. Great if you like grittier manga. (art is more realistic) (mature)
why you might not like it: more of a crime drama
Dolls About a branch of the judicial section that kills those who would be put on death row before they are incarcerated to save the government money and time. Everyone has skeletons in the closet in this one.
why you might not like it: gritty.
Dogs: Bullets & Carnage and Dogs : Gorgeous art, tragic pasts, and a great story taking place in a time where man's golden age has passed. Concerns several quirky individuals coexisting in a dangeous and gang ridden province. Features people with disfunctions of all sorts, both physical and mental. Rated mature for a scene where the female protagonist is topless (nothing sexual, it's to show her scars) as well as some racy scenes in Dogs Though it doesn't take place in the conventional fantasy world, it makes itself out to be a fantasy of sorts, with immortality, and chimeras, but has a gunslinger feel to it.
(love this one X3)
why you might not like it: gritty. From criminal pov?
Jormungand revolves around a very young gun-for-hire that hates guns, but joins forces with a weapons dealer. Interesting plot, touches of drama.
why you might not like it: setting is modern japan w/supernatural elements
Code:Breaker Girl grows suspicious of transfer student after she allegedly sees him burning gang members in a park- with a blue flame- but leave not a trace of evidence behind. She starts to investigate him, but she might be playing with fire in doing so. Good plot, compelling characters, and supernatural elements.
~~ Enjoy !
i'll post more later!

I second Hitsuji no Uta, it's a bit pschological though and the drama and tragedy in the manga makes me hate it sooo... much. You should also check this out Ubel Blatt, one the best tragedy fantasy out there sooo good that i can't hate it >:-( .
It's not fantasy but tragedy all the same, so check this one out too Sanctuary
You like the things that i HATE, and i HATE the things that you like
