I wanted to know if anyone knows any manga that made you evaluate your ideas on taboos we have in society.
For me personally, as a american i feel that just reading manga has made me more open minded (or just more desensitized) towards little things that I was raised to just reject without consideration and label taboo.
So i was curious what mangas other people might have come across that genuinely made them reconsider a taboo
Thanks!^-^

I don't believe in taboos my self, so i'm not really affected regardless of the topic of the manga... but i can think of two that will probably fit your pethition.
"Hourou musuko" and "Family Compo"
Is the best that i can think, since the Topic is so clearly a Taboo for most people.

Especially in America...
I'm gonna second these, only things I can think of at the moment.

well, i dont know, to me most manga have some sort of other that is taboo or bad in my society, and through accumulation of reading, i think i am more open of a person. something like crossdressing, incest, lolicon/shotacon, homosexuality, suicide, delinquency, smoking, drinking, atheism, etc. well, i dont know whether this is good or bad.

Koi Kaze incest. From a sober, intellectual stand point, not some exploitative ecchi moe fest.
For that we have Aki Sora and Yosuga No Sora
Sundome deals with sex in general, especially sexually dominant women.
Welcome to the NHK is all out social criticism and cleans up with all the uncomfortable parts of japanese media and social phenomena.

Kodomo no kodomo is about how and when you are supposed to give sex ed to kids.
Seconding Koi Kaze.
Seconding the fact that mangas dealing with taboo and mangas that itself is taboo is a blurred line. But I don't feel like making a statement right now.

Usagi Drop
I wouldn't say it made me reconsider, necessarily, because I never had that much of a problem with it before... but it certainly was an interesting perspective.

I just tough of another, popular, manga. It does have some (read quite a lot) ecchi, but it doesn't focus on the ecchiness of the mangas as much as it focus on the history itself, i'm talking about Kodomo no Jikan
if you had't, you might whant to check it out.

I thought the requirements were "good" manga that deal with taboos, not pandering pieces of pedophilia trying to invoke a protective instinct.

IS - Otoko demo Onna demo Nai Sei, at least in my opinion. Not that it taught me anything new (in fact, I was under the impression that it was even MORE common than indicated), but it brought the issue into focus and made me think, realising that the situation where I live is only marginally better than in Japan.

if you read kodomono jikan for what it is
the sexual eplorations of a young girl
then it works very well into this
its rare to see comics actually deal with childrens sexual desires
in a serious and at the same time fun way
its rare in any form of literature
it also bring up another subject
how sex is viewd diffrently with genders
male 10yo thingking about sex with his hot teacher = normal
girl 10yo thinking about sex with her hot teacher = sick and gets easily turned into a discussion about pedophilia

... Just, no.
Neither situation is normal, or should be.
I can sort of understand it if it's about 14-16 year olds, when at the height of their puberty, but 10 year olds? That's just sick, and if it's considered "normal", it should be a clear indication that something is wrong with our society today.
In case of Kodomo no Jikan, what disturbs me most is not the subject itself, but the social "acceptance" of such behaviour.
And for those that say "lighten up, it's comedy", think of it this way: The more people curse, especially around children, the more "normal" it becomes... It's tearing down social conventions, which at times can be a good thing, but in this case I consider it very bad.
