ok before i discovered manga, i was into books and novels. If you are into this stuff too, pls cite ur favorite authors and their work that you loved the most here!
[authors of Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew series] - these series got me started on reading looooooooooong books, no small thanks to my sister.
Mario Puzo / The Sicilian - yes i know he's most famous for the Godfather series, but i actually loved the Sicilian the most.
John Grisham / A Painted House - this book is a huge deviation from his other more famous works such as 'A time to kill' and 'Runaway Jury"
Sidney Sheldon / Tomorrow never dies - hehehe awakened my hormones when i was entering my teens. I thought the author was a 'she'!
Anne Rice / Interview with the Vampire - dont know what to say here. the movie misleads u on who the main protagonist is.
JRR Tolkien / The Lord of the Rings - i love and have read all his works actually. im a tolkien freak!!!!
[Nameless authors of countless romance novels] - i used to 'borrow' my sister's books just to read the 'steamy' parts... Note to parents: believe your teenagers when they say its 'educational'.

Mmm... sorta of historical order.
Homer (does it count?)
Euripides
Dante Alighieri
William Shakespeare
Victor Hugo
Ugo Foscolo
Miyazawa Kenji
Douglas Adams
Haruki Murakami
These are my favs who just came to my mind. Of course there are many other but I can't list them all and I'm already probably forgetting someone.
Oh, and just to let people hate me, I hate almost all the commercial best-seller guy (Dan Brown, Christian Jacq, Clive Cussler etc.)

John Steinbeck. Few people have/had the grasp over the human condition better than him.

can't believe i left out:
J.K. Rowling - sue me
Dosteovsky(?)/ Crime and Punishment - man, this is really really hard to read!
Anne Frank / Diary of Anne Frank - opened my eyes
Elie Wiesel / Night - really opened my eyes. It made me a non-prejudiced person.

Re:
*Homer was a storyteller correct? But he's the 'originator' so he's also the author i think
- Iliad and Odyssey is like going in circles though
*i usually check out a bestselling author, then research what work made him famous. Sometimes they follow through with better work and sometimes they don't, ala one hit wonder Dan Brown.
