Good, but twisted

I like Kare Kano. I really do. I enjoyed the anime, up until the end, and I enjoyed the manga. But I remember reading it the first time and thinking when I got to the end, this is a seriously messed up drama. Re-reading it, I am once again reminded of what I thought was twisted the first time around.
A 1st year high school girl, aka 16, is dating a guy 12 years her senior. I don't know what the deal is with her family life, but thats just wrong. And then the ending. Without getting into spoilers. A young girl hooking up with a guy nearly 20 years older then her. A guy she grew up with, who was more like an uncle... Now thats just sick and wrong. Don't misunderstand me. I liked the basic story. Arima and Miyazawa were terrific. Some of the side characters were good throughout too, but some of the situations, and conclusions, well its hard to accept them. Even if this is from Japan.
Despite all this, I did enjoy the story. It is worth reading. Fun, and entertaining throughout.

this manga really catered to the emotional side....but i personally thought the story telling was a bit ... horrible. what happens to arima and others are pretty interesting, but the way it was introduced was sorta boring, simply just stating what happened, really nothing unexpected since there was hardly any development. and the relatinoships...were kinda weird if you think about it, you have at least 3 relationsihps that could be considered 'forbidden' (come on Sixteen years older asaba.....really?). in the end i feel like the author punked out. and the art was really annoying. it was hard to figure out who was who so much that i had to look at hair to find out. i could just see this as a good almost amatuer attempt by the author to make a heart wrenching manga, and i can see why people recommend this...its because its bland, and not bad i guess. to each his own

At first I only began reading the story to find out what happened after the anime series stops. I never expected it to become so dark and saddening. Yet, it was those unpredicted elements that made the characters become memorable to me. I don't think it would have been such a worthwhile read, if it was just the mainstream romantic comedy that it originally portrayed.
One of the better points of it was how it seemed as if the characters emotions could be felt. Not many authors are able to achieve that depth of emotion on paper. Usually I avoid angsty reading material, but on this one I couldn't help but be drawn in.

well i have watched the anime of this and i was a bit hesitant whether i should read the manga or not but still...its worth it!!!
yeah...i got a little pissed at Arima for being overly dramatic and a bit emo, not to mention psychotic...and i also read some oneshots to get rid of the bad feelings but he turned out pretty well!!
i really love this manga!!! the way it doesnt focus on the main characters alone...i love hearing other people's stories so...i think its wonderful and all of them has beautiful tales to tell!!! my favorite is kazuma and tsubasa's love story it was deep and cute at the same time!!!
the ending it was just beautiful...i really like happy endings...
i can really relate to this thing and the way the characters feel...and how masami tsuda sensei conveys it...i was just like wow!!!
at first i thought that i want to give this a 9 but it was worth 15!!! but sadly i can only give 10 here...

Moderate level of drama not so light, not so hard.
If you never read shoujo manga before, this one is good for starter.
I think the only flaw in this manga is arima issue near the end.
(I don't mind side story especially yukino's old man side story is even greater and touching than main story.)

Probably my favorite shojo romance manga.

Amazingly great. Excellent characters, story, art (for something made in 1996), romance, comedy, and slice of life. If i had to say something about this that is negative, its probably that Arima becomes a a bit emo half way through. Other than that, its really an amazing manga.
pretty good

Love the beginning. The middle part was okay. Kinda interesting sometimes. The development of the character is good but taken too long to reach the conclusion so it made me forget the other characters' stories. It's like a tree with a strong root - the premise of the story is so convincing - then it branches of to too many different directions and the tree just falls down because it cannot hold that many branches.
Great love story

I saw the anime first. It was funny and I really liked the anime but as the ending came near... oh my gosh the animation is just totally bogus. The company didn't have enough money and they started to use stick figure puppets. oh gosh I cannot even describe my frustration for that.
Which led me to this manga~ I am so thankful for finding this manga after experiencing the horrible anime.
This manga is funny and has romance. The main female isn't some annoying dumb girl who has a weak personality and her lover is also awesome.
It's funny and all for a while but then about halfway through the manga, the "drama" in the romance begins--mostly concerning 'traumatizing' experiences and such as well as change in character & personality.
The plot is interesting, really funny but serious and nothing that would really make you want to pull your hair out while gritting your teeth (in my opinion).
Although the downside is within the VERY in depth stories about the "side characters". I guess that's why the manga has 21 volumes (that's long).
Oh ya, ARTWORK! Artwork is so important for me and I'm sure artwork is just as important to some others. This manga is published in 1996. Many mangas from the 90's are drawn really "old school". Old school like puffy hair, pointy faces, high pants etc etc. I don't like those lol (no offense to anyone). Well in my opinion, this manga is drawn very nicely compared to my view on many mangas published before 2000(ish).
