Description
From Yen Press:
A sweet "aww"-inspiring tale of school life begins. At school, Kyouko Hori is known for being smart, attractive, and popular. On the other hand, her classmate, the boring, gloomy Izumi Miyamura tends to get painted as a "loser fanboy." But when a liberally pierced and tattooed (not to mention downright gorgeous) Miyamura appears unexpectedly on the doorstep of secretly plain-Jane homebody Hori, these two similarly dissimilar teenagers discover that there are multiple sides to every story and person.

Definitely this manga went over my expectations, i was expecting some plain plot and over used situations on this kind of genre, but is nice to see some good shounen once in a while, worth the read.

All the characters are likable, the art is really good and the comedy is great. There's no drawn out misunderstandings or characters which get on your nerves too much and the pacing is slow and steady.
Highly recommended.

Great Manga

I really love this manga because it contains my favorite concepts in what I find in manga. The lead isn't over dramatic like many other shoujo manga and the secrets between the leads are just so cute. The only fault in this manga is that nothing is original or something that can strike at you and say "Very Interesting," but since this manga contains the concepts in which most reader like to read about, I would highly recommend it.

Not a Shoujo manga

It's really not. It might feel like it at first(even I thought so) but as it goes more into the story, more Shounen-eqsue aspects become noticeable. The male lead, for example, is too imperfect, despite his good looks, to be a Shoujo male lead and reminds you more and more of a Sho-Rom male lead as you read more about him. If I were to classify it, I'd say Horimiya is both Shounen and Shoujo as it seems to have aspects of both. It's almost as if the author is trying to blur the lines between the two demographics.

Regardless of quality I have to state something: this is a Shoujo Manga
by kirisaki

First of all I won't analyse the quality of the manga itself, that's why I refrained from rating it. I do have to say though, I dislike it but that's not very important, I just want to make a point since I didn't dislike it because I thought it was bad but because I immediately noticed it wasn't within the genres I like (shounen, seinen).

Let me start this by saying that I'm not criticizing the series itself, just trying to make a point. Now let's face it: Horimiya has got to be a Shoujo manga. Seriously think about it. Imagine you hadn't seen what genre it belonged to and were asked to guess it. I'm guessing that if we polled that and people answered completely unbiased (without having seen the genre before hand) the answers would be: 70% shoujo; 25% josei; 5% shounen/seinen/"no idea". If you're gonna say "but it comes out in a shounen magazine" I'll accept that but also point out that said magazine contains a shounen ai manga (Utau! Heiankyou), a shoujo manga (Tokyo Yamanote Boys) and 4 manga that eventually got transferred to shoujo magazines (Gestalt, Hatenkou Yuugi, Switch, Tactics) so it wouldn't be weird at all for Horimiya to actually belong more to the Shoujo label than Shounen.

Now you might be saying "yeah, yeah, whatever douchebag what does it matter?". Well, it matters quite a bit. Let me state this very clearly first: I do not think and am not saying that only women read and enjoy shoujo, or josei for that matter. Shoujo is just a sort of marketing label which indicates that the manga was mainly targeted towards a female audience, it doesn't mean that its readership or fan-base consist exclusively of women. Just as there are many many women out there who really enjoy Shounen or Seinen, I believe there is also a good amount of guys who appreciate and even prefer the genre. The thing is, we all have preferences. And a good amount of us have some genres that they just don't like. For instance, I do not enjoy shoujo or josei. I've tried a few before and quickly noticed that it really did nothing for me. Not because they're bad, but because it's a genre that really doesn't appeal to my taste in particular. That's all. And that's why these labels that fundamentally are nothing more than marketing labels end up being important when I'm looking for new manga to read. I mean, just think about it, it narrows down my search results to nearly half.

With that in mind, allow me to make a rather bold and particularly risky guess... I'm guessing that most people who really love (and I mean it, not just kind of liking it) this series are women. I apologize to any male fans for this rude guess, but I think that it helps my point. Horimiya is a shoujo series. I don't see how it isn't. If you don't think so I beg you to please try one thing: think back and remember the first chapter and think if it'd be weird if that was a shoujo series. Maybe not the classic absolutely generic shoujo but still a shoujo. No 2 ways around it, the story is perfectly shoujo-like.

That being said, to any out there who, like me, have tried the shoujo genre only to find that it did not suit their preferences, I can not recommend this as it absolutely feels like a shoujo story in every way.

I apologize if I have offended any fans out there, it was not my intention, I just wanted to state this for others like me.

EDIT: Oh and trust me, I'm not saying that just because this is a romance. I'm not that new to manga.

A brilliant shounen romance with lovable main characters! I'd recommend this to anyone who's looking for a light hearted romance without all the unnecessary drama, ecchi and harem cliches. Definitely worth a perfect score in my opionion!

i was really hesitant to read this manga because of the bad reviews n comments i seen but luckily i gave it a chance it was honestly a nice read. the concept of it was very cute n the characters are very simple in a good way. the art may not be the best but the style fits the manga very well. the bad thing about this manga is it seems to have suddden jumps in the plot leaving the reader confused at times n some of the dialog is hard understand. i wouldnt say is a great manga n there is room for improvement but over all it was an enjoyable read n im looking forward to the next chapter..

Horimiya daisuki!

I super love this manga! It doesnt bore me at all cause it has a very lighthearted plot, it's funny and kind of sweet. It has this ingredient that makes the readers want more, not giving too much of the love story of hori and miyamura but not too slow paced. The characters' relationship develops gradually, and is very realistic. That's why i love slice of life genre, and i'm starting to like seinen too. hori, is not the usual weak female protagonist just like other mangas and miyamura is a little weird and funny. I super love miyamura! Like my type of guy. I just can't get enough of this manga and i want more! I hope the next chapters would be released soon, i think this is a monthly manga. I just super love this!

I absolute am in love with this manga. It's so light hearted. It makes me happen whenever I read it.
The art is divine. So cute! Well drawn and clean.
The characters are lovable and relatable. They are not typical mindless high schoolers. Their characters are very interesting.
I'm very interested in the romance that will surely come. I am on chapter 17 right now and the romance just began to bloom for real. I'm really excited for that. I look forward to reading more about Izumis past.
I can't wait for the next chapter! I can barely hold myself back from looking for the raws!!
