stunning and distressing viewpoint on sibling relationships
by korinacaffeine

Probably one of the more beautiful manga/manwhas I've encountered, definitely the only one to make me tear up. This was my first time reading a story of its kind (incest) and I think it did a good job of displaying the obsessive love the siblings have for one another while still making that love ambiguous. Is it really love, or is it just familial closeness being mistranslated? There are a lot of plot twists that I would NEVER have seen coming, and I was very thankful for the surprises. Shoujo is usually extremely predictable.

The characters were well-defined with personalities that varied vastly from one to the other. The mangaka did a good job of showing how character relationships impacted not only parties involved, but also friends and family and others close by. Every pang of guilt, fear, or physical pain felt by the characters was real and visceral. The technical delivery was stunning (in particular, a scene where the twins' father hangs his head and clutches his glasses stands out) and the art, while often falling flat and becoming nonexpressive, was pretty good as well. Motives were clear, and nothing was confusing about the plot at all. After every reveal I understood exactly what was going on. The only thing that we aren't sure about is
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Seh-wa's real feelings. It's never explained whether she is in love with her brother or if it's just platonic love being misinterpreted.

I feel like the ending could have been handled better--specifically,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Seh-wa's death felt jarring and the emotions of the parents, Seh-jun, and Jung were not touched on nearly enough
--but I'm ultimately satisfied with it.

This is really a stunning manga overall, but it is far from a light read and it will push the boundaries of what you're comfortable with, particularly if you have opposite sex siblings. It's not explicit but it can be rather uncomfortable in its lewdest moments. There are a lot of interesting motifs as well, such as Seh-jun's religiousness and
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Seh-wa's heart pains
being misinterpreted as "twin telepathy." It also contains a good amount of symbols--Seh-jun's rosary/cross necklace, the twins' framed picture, and near the end, Seh-waand Jung's cell phones. I also found it interesting that Seh-jun being religious and Jung being atheist were deliberately stated early on, and I feel like this was a purposeful move on the mangaka's part to draw attention to the dichotomy and irony of the situation.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Seh-jun, the religious party, eventually has sex with his sister, tries to kill Jung, and then commits suicide, whereas Jung is tempted to "sin" but holds himself back many times.
However, I could just be looking a bit too far into it.

I highly recommend this manwha if not because you want a realistic (albeit dramatic) story about a romantic relationship between twins then because you should explore these types of situations that can make people uncomfortable. Unsettling, haunting, and beautifully ironic are just some of the words that can be used to describe Flowers of Evil.

Mixed feelings

I picked this up because I was looking for an incest-story that wasn't trying to beg for forgiveness. One about real siblings, who had to deal with the guilt and shame et cetera. And while I think that there certainly were stronger, well-executed parts to be found in this story, parts I'm too lazy to talk about (and really, the other reviews here point out the good things well enough imo) the art and story-telling both were lacking:

The characters had little to no expressions, and were generally rather shallow and confusing. The twin-brother stumbled around the same issue again and again, and things that later have been revealed make it harder to see him as a real person. - While struggling with one and the same issue forever is a very realistic trait, it slowed down the plot in a very annoying way, and made it almost impossible for me to find the 'tragic' ending actually tragic. None of the characters made me sympathize. I could understand their motivation, or I could accept where they were coming from, but they never managed to make me 'feel' for them, or to make me care about them.

It wasn't very romantic, nor was it overly disgusting or sick. I wouldn't call it shoujo, either. Sure, the characters were high school students, but they lacked personality apart from their obsessive, possessive and also absurdidly childish love and inability to communicate with eachother like real people sometimes do.

In short: My main problem was that I couldn't trust any of the characters. They lied, they didn't think about the lies (so the reader doesn't really know if they told the truth or not) and their non-existent facial expressions didn't give me a clue, either. That's a little unreliable, and their hot-and-cold attitude didn't make it any better.

Indeed, this is a very interesting version of the siblings love story. There's nothing light-hearted shoujo or reality-ignoring ecchi about it. This isn't like all those semi-incest cases at all; it's love between real siblings, and it's shown as wrong, ugly, nerve-wrecking and nauseating by the characters.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found the plot easy to understand. It's a very simple manhwa to read; you only have to remember 5 names and you can read a volume in about 10 minutes.

The characters are undoubtedly flat. The art is gorgeous, but rather featureless; everyone looks the same, just with different haircuts. But even if there are many things that drag Flowers of Evil down, I've still ended up reading it twice. It kind of gets you hooked from start to finish.

Gets bogged down by the visuals

This is a case where the art style (while beautiful and fitting with people with elongated limbs and modelesque looks which fit the melancholic tone) actually DETRACTED from my reading experience. Mainly because I felt there was no life to the characters. They seemed like mannequins, pretty things like marionettes with no emotion. There was little variation in facial expressions so there weren't a lot of CUES as to how the characters were feeling -- too many blank stares. The main characters look so doll-like that I could never real connect with them; at dramatic moments I found it difficult to feel any emotional connection. The characters look so blase that I FELT blase myself. Want to jump out a window? Oh, okay. (Like I've noticed that even if a character is shouting, or close to 'tears', their EYES ARE ALWAYS THE SAME SIZE. If someone is crying, or smiling, etc, usually their face scrunches up due to the muscles engaged; cheeks go up, eyes 'look' smaller, etc... The characters in this manhwa don't look sincere in their expressions.) Seriously, yeah, the artwork is so beautiful it's doll-like and boring. If it doesn't convey EMOTION, how can I be expected to feel anything for the characters' trials and tribulations? The main thing that kept me reading was the mystery and it was around chapter 23 that I started feeling an iota of tension, drama, loss, despair. (I think the artwork got more expressive, too.)

Perhaps it's because of a poor translation, but the writing was sometimes confusing and the mystery seemed... like it wasn't really cleared up. I'm not even sure.

Despite all its shortcomings, it's still worth reading... if you can make it to the end, that is.

Unexpected Masterpiece

This manhwa is amazing! I wanted to give this a 10 full heartedly. Usually i don't ever give a series such a good rating due to I always have some part of the series that make me mark it down. This one only had minor ones which i allowed not to bother me. The art and story both matched each other well. It might be disturbing to some people but if you really took the time to read this you won't regret it. I recommend this to almost anyone.

Errr, I don't quite know what to say....err first off this didn't really feel like a manga, it felt like a novel but with pictures....This err...novel was really strange because, I don't know whether I actually even liked this..It got me turning on every page but, it was out of interest and tbh I really felt weird reading this because it was really..err weird/evil.

I feel like this manga was destined for a bad ending, and if their was a happy ending it would of been very sick.I didn't cry during the end because I felt that it was well deserved. The ending also felt slightly rushed and predictable, both twins deserved eachother to be honest. They were complete freaks, and some of the things they did didn't make sense, I was still left..confused.Like [SPOILER:why did the male twin push his sister away all them times if he's so obsessed with her ? Why did they turn out so messed up, even though they had perfectly normal parents ?SPOILER].

Really to sum this up, is say this ...manga was completely out my comfort zone and it was trying to be emotional, but for me failed.

I used to just take a look at this manhwa and pass it on. For the past few years, this manhwa has reappeared again and again in front of my eyes, yet I wasn't interested. Certainly not into tragedies, and even less for incest. I wasn't a big fan of the art in this story too (but the artist gets really good later, particularly in Savage Garden, which I also recommend). But this... This was perfect. The ending was the most perfect ending that I have ever seen in any manhwa/manga/manhua. Words cannot describe what I feel towards it. No, I have not shed tears, but deep within, I feel that this manhwa grasped something in my heart. The characters left me speechless, and their pain was detailed through every chapter. I highly recommend it.

Definitely, a masterpiece.
At first I was a bit skeptic on reading this, since it is categorized as incest. But then I was totally wrong. The female lead had mistaken her feelings as love when in fact it is just merely a longing for security. Her brother enclosed her too much that she ALMOST never had a chance too explore more and stand by herself. I'm glad that, at least, she was able to free herself from Seh-jun and experience REAL LOVE.

Destructive love at its best. I liked it... It was twisted but not sickening. The twincest was also kinda subtle so it wasn't so creepy. I loved how she was finding out what she truly wanted before it all went very bad. And surprise surprise she wasn't the crazy one that everyone thought her to be! I feel so sorry for Gi-Hoon/Sung-Chan.. Why oh why did it have to be so tragic. Sigh I was so banking on a happier ending.
Go. Read now!!

Honestly I read this like, half-asleep, just wanting to end it so I can be satisfied by reading at least ONE manga for the day... I never expected anything out of it, even though I knew it was tragedy. I thought it was just gonna be all like psycho shit mixed with romance. But the ending... just hit me so hard. It was so perfect... but sickening and beautiful at the same time... Amazing and recommended. Please don't stop reading once you're into it or else you'll be missing out on something truly great!! It will touch your heart in such an unexpected way. But you gotta gtfo if you're looking for some fluffy shoujo coz it won't suit you. bigrazz
