At First I didn't think I would like this at all, especially
because I couldn't get into the Art Work...but I'm glad I didn't
give up, the art gets better later on, and to me this was a very good shoujo
manga, especially because it's not short ^^

Ridiculous

I think this manga would have performed much much better if it had been restricted to 1-2 volumes. Like pearlesque said, the characters behave very irrationally. There's very little character development going on with any of the characters. The introduction of new characters seems like a routine process that involves falling in love with either Tsukasa or Tsukushi, pursuing him or her to the jealousy of the other, and then yielding to the "bond" the two main characters have with each other and never playing an important part in the story ever again.

The repetition would have been okay for a few of the characters, but it goes on throughout the whole series (well, up to Volume 24, anyway; that's where I'm at). I think the potential of so many of the characters are wasted to develop the topsy-turvy relationship of Tsukasa and Tsukushi. I really wish Kamio Youko had created a more unpredictable romance; every character -- from the F4 to Kazuya to Sakurako to Seinosuke to Shigeru to Tsukasa and Tsukushi -- has been doing the same things from the beginning. It's clockwork-- Tsukasa and Tsukushi get angry at each other every other volume for one thing or another, then kiss and make up even though they decide they hate the other. I'm sure that the phrase "I hate you" comes up as much as "I love you" does.

My biggest nuisance (for now) is that the F4 are as insensitive as bricks -- and just as hard. I'm amazed that they're all much stronger than their opponents on every occasion. Nothing fazes the F4, and yet... I don't quite get the impression they bother training hard enough to be strong.

Well, I might give another update to this review, if I decide on finishing the manga. I don't feel motivated to bother. My reason: no character development.

Update: even after reading it, I still don't think it was worth stretching into 36 volumes.

Years later, I read the entired thing and while I enjoyed it, and the srt certainly got much better, I cant believe this is the best selling manga.

The definition of shoujo
by Pandoreye

This is basically the ultimate shoujo. It has everything expected of a shoujo. I watched the anime many years ago and decided to come back and devour the manga in three days. I thought it was a fun ride.

Some haphazard thoughts:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Favorite Arc: Canada trip
Least favorite arc: amnesia arc. I will count myself lucky if I never have to see an amnesia plot again. It was excruciating.
Favorite character: Sakurako - she had so much growth. Wow. And I definitely shipped her with Kazuya, although he kind of disappears after a while.
Most hated character: Umi. Stab stab stab.

I definitely preferred the beginning of the manga the best. In my opinion, this went downhill a bit after Tsukasa went to New York the first time. The plot just became agitating. I mean, can someone explain that part where they go to the island? No one is on the ship with them, but they magically arrive at their destination (or maybe there's a ghost captain or they just didn't see the crew?). And then there's that time that Tsukasa's psycho mother hires people to literally break into a guest house...

I had a few issues as well. Like, why does Tsukishi have 800 love interests? And why are all these love interests so flashy? Where are the normal dudes?

Will Tsukishi ever get a hobby that isn't just her earning money?

Wow, the art got so much better as the story progressed. It really hit me around chapter 90 or so that the characters looked good and didn't just look like sad potatoes. (Tsukasa's hair was sooo weird in the beginning.)

I wish some of the side characters got more side plots. Mimasaka doesn't get enough attention. And Nishikado's plot felt aimless at the end of it all. And Rui's breakup with Shizuka is literally skimmed over. Kazuya gets forgotten about. And it took me until chapter 112 to realize Tsukishi's brother actually had a name. I think this story could have fleshed out more side character plots and skipped useless amnesia plots.

Overall though, I very much enjoyed this. I never reread manga, but I can see why people would reread this (or at least reread until Tsukasa's mother is introduced).

Telling it like it is

Hana Yori Dango despite being a shoujo isn't just some fluffy sugar coated fairytale where the heroine has her way, if that's what your looking for, then this isn't for you.

This is about a adolescent girl trying not to make trouble but trouble comes right to her, and you know why because she stands up for herself the best she can.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She's not a Mary sue or the perfect heroine but she's a decent human being.
The boys aren't sunshine and rainbows either, they each have there flaws but it's realistic.
This is a drama more than it is a romance, about an adolescent girl developing , struggling through society, developing frenemy type relationships, calling out fake friends, being betrayed while also a bit naive in trusting others.
If you like the tomboy life style then this is more up your ally.
The style is old but not astro boy level old. It's stand out on it's own because the author puts in diversity.
At the end of the day this story is about a weed trying to prove she's just as good as the flowers.

Also the bullying can be pretty brutal for those who can't stomach it, not the worst, but it's nothing too simple either and that turns a lot of people off but I read this twice and am about to go in for a third read.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
PS. Drama's of this aren't as entertaining and mess up the order ruining the story. The best way to enjoy this series is through the manga and anime first. If you watched the dramas first then you may have ruined the series for yourself.
Also the Anime and manga have different endings. That's if you don't mind watching the anime though it's old.

Update:
So yeah I read it again and still enjoyed it. It was a whirlpool of emotions. One thing I forgot to mention is that the art improves over time so be a bit patient with it. The improvement shows in just a few chapters so you don't have to wait forever. You may not enjoy it for it's romance alone but you will enjoy the story itself. It refuses to be a dark manga despite having dark themes, so nothing too tragic just incase you're worried.
4/13/21
I read it for a forth time and went out of my way to find special chapters and chapters of Hana Nichi Hare with makino (chapters 100-107). Do I plan to read this sequel in full, no but I will come for chapters that continue Makino's life. 9/20/22

Really good...

I really loved almost everything about this manga. Although at times there were characters that I found absolutely frustrating and wanted to drop it, the mangaka managed to keep my attention throughout the 241 chapters of the entire plot. The character friendships were gorgeous and the drama was paced well so it wasn't suffocated, and it wasn't too slow that I made me want to stop reading it. In other words, it was very well paced. The ending was a little bit disappointing... like you've been through so much together... WHY ARE YOU STILL BOTH VIRGINS aha lol
A recommended read!

Strange

This story starts as somehow realistic: rich boys play around destroying others school lives and nobody can stop them. The only stupid girl who tries to do something gets toyed around by them and their lackeys. So you can say it looks rather good and understandable. And then starts some crazy s***: she actually fallsin love with two of them (Stogholm syndrome?). Then we read how good these boys really are and forget about all their victims or make these victims look bad (episode with the hostage). As for me I think that those boys are spoiled trash. I understand their behaviour but do not understand their parents reaction.

My First Love

If you are questioning whether or not to read read it, I only have one thing to say... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD READ IT!!!!!!! embarrassed

This manga will always have a special place in my heart. It wasn't the first manga I read, and definitely not the last. But this manga had something. Something that made me go completely insane. I literally lived, ate and breathed Hana Yori Dango for about a year. Eagerly waiting for the scanlations to upload and trying to find time to read it... And re-read it. I can absolutely say, that no manga, no book or movie EVER made me as obsessed as this story made me. I couldn't stop thinking about the plot, the characters. It's just simply addictive!! biggrin This is pure genius! It's got everything: great plot, wonderfull characters wich you learn to both love and hate, and surprising twists and turns when it comes to the relationships and events following the main characters.

I sincerely urge you to read this manga. If you don't, I'll haunt you in your sleep >]

Joke aside, I actually have trouble findig words to how much this manga has affected me and how much I love it. And I'm not saying it as an otaku, I'm saying it as any person with a sane mind would say about any story wich you could relate to and learn from. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it makes you angry. It's simply just wonderful.

I've watched the anime and the dramas... and well, they don't live up to the manga, but that's expected with them. Usually the book/manga is always better than the movie.
But I've been a little afraid of reading the others of her works, like "Cat Street". I know it's not Hana Yori Dango, but I'm afraid I'll compare them too much. Is there anyone out there who's read other mangas from this Mangaka? And did you think it was worth it? wink
