You know, I felt like a real idiot yesterday. Okay, so something that makes me feel like an idiot happens everyday, because life is just that wonderful, but - this was a special kind of stupid. You guys know the manga Master Keaton, right? It's this amazing manga by the great genius, Urasawa Naoki, and I've been pining for more scanlations for, like... YEARS. Eons, even.

AND THEN I JUST FOUND OUT YESTERDAY THAT IT HAD AN ANIME ADAPTATION.

THAT HAD BEEN COMPLETELY SUBBED.



What the hell, people. What did I spend all those years torturing myself for? No wonder scanlation groups weren't picking up this wonderful manga! BECAUSE THE ANIME ADAPTATION WAS COMPLETELY SUBBED!

*headdesk*

*repeatedly*

...Right. Now that I've cracked my cranium the way it thoroughly deserves to be cracked (for housing such an idiotic brain), I can move on with my request. And pretend that I can't hear a miniature Nyanko-sensei in my head, chanting 'Aho!' every two seconds.

Could people tell me of MORE anime adaptions that are ahead of their mangas? In terms of subs, I mean - either official subs (i.e. for licensed series) or fansubs. So, like, if a manga has only had 1 volume scanlated, the subbed anime adaption is further along in the plot...

I really can't stand the idea of spending eternity pining away for yet another brilliant manga to get scanlated, only to discover at the very end of eternity that a subbed anime was available all along... Please help me!

Adaptations I already know of:

Himitsu - it sure SEEMS like the anime subs are way ahead of the manga scanlations...

House of Five Leaves - the completely fansubbed anime adaptation is not only ahead of the scanlations, but (apparently) ahead of the manga itself! Since, you know, the story is pretty much resolved at the end of the anime. o__O;

Mouryou no Hako - a novel, this time. Creepy and brilliant, but the anime subs are way ahead of the scanlations... um, translations? Yeah.

Peace Maker Kurogane - again, the subs are way ahead of the scanlations. The anime series is completely subbed.

Zipang - the anime is completely subbed and goes up to vol. 7 of the manga, which is only scanlated up to the second volume (but is 43 volumes long, so I still look forward to more scanlations, at least after vol. 7!).

Any more anime adaptations like these? Whose subs are farther along than the manga scanlations, I mean... Oh, and I'm okay with novel adaptations, too. Any genre is fine - except hentai, d'oh! And don't worry if the anime and the manga 'part ways' in terms of plot - as long as the anime is further ahead in terms of plot development/resolution, I'll welcome it any day.

Thanks in advance! I hope that by compiling a list here, we can help each other feed our plot-hunger for mangas that aren't scanlated at all, or aren't scanlated far enough to satisfy us. The anime information provided on the M-U series' pages isn't always complete, either, so this might help us complete that information, too... Fingers crossed!

Umm.... Yawara also has a completely subbed adaptation.

Mokke is another example, though the anime adaptation is vastly inferior because of the clearly younger target audience.

And although Mouryou has been translated, it has not been translated well. This is completely understandable, as Kyougoku Natsuhiko writes with the prose, vocabulary, and intentionality of a madman (in Japanese, he actually plans out the layouts of his novels so that no sentence extends beyond the end of a page. Because it bothers him when that happens.) I seem to recall Natsu no Ubume, the novel which precedes Mouryou in that series, having a decent English translation though. Pick up a copy? It's not spectacular literature, but has the same entertainment value as what you'd get from a manga volume anyway.

There are quite a lot of abandoned projects that have a fully subbed anime. Unscanlated manga usually get picked up when there's an announcement about it receiving an anime adaptation. Then, when the anime finally airs, the project gets abandoned -- since anime speeds through chapters (most of the time) and subbing requires less work than scanlating, I think.

I won't even bother listing any, since each season batch contains a good 75% of adaptions (including manga). Meaning, there are a fawkload. D;

Just look through this, there's your answer. *shrug* 408 uses.

Aiight, then I'll ask people for the anime adaptations with advanced subs that they'd recommend especially! Like I said, some awesome anime adaptations aren't yet listed on M-U, probably because they're a bit older - at any rate, I'll continue to welcome recommendations for great anime adaptations.

@Crenshinibon, heh. Kyougoku Natsuhiko sounds like a man after my own heart - or head, as it were.

as for HOTD anime stopped at chap 18 i guess....thr will be a season 2 aftr some chaps compile is what i hear

kamfer manga is laaaaaaaaame i too agree...i was able to go thru the anime due to the brunette student president character....i have hots for those kinda characters and moreover art was good in anime...but the light novel is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar ahead of the anime..

same goes for zero no tsukaima .....the anime stopped well ahead of the light novels which is still ongoing

I think that the 4 episodes of Otome Youkai Zakuro are way over what has been scanlated.

And one correction on your Peace Maker Kurogane claim. What is fully subbed/animated/etc is actually Shinsengumi Imon Peace Maker titled as Peace Maker Kurogane when animated. And the manga Peace Maker Kurogane is actually a continuation (you'll find few repeats, mostly the funny parts, but story wise it proceeds from where anime/Shinsengumi Imon Peace Maker left off).

Yeah. Actually, the first episode of Otome Youkai Zakuro already surpassed the one chapter that has been scanlated. looool. But you might want to wait for this to finish its TV run... unless you want to torture yourself to wait for an episode every week!

I haven't read the light-novel nor the manga scanlations for Spice and Wolf, so I don't know if the two seasons surpass the scanlations... but it's a nice one to watch (well, in my opinion... and unfortunately, I've only seen 2 episodes so far... looool... but I like it so far)!

I'm pretty sure the Ookiku Furikabutte anime (2nd season) is pretty far ahead of the scanlation (sadly). Haven't seen all the eps, so I don't know how far ahead though.

As far as I know Kyou kara Ma no Tsuku Jiyuugyou! and Hetalia have anime adapations with story-lines that have long since passed their respective manga's scanlations.

In a way, One Outs. The anime covers the story from volumes 1-9 of the manga (books 1-3 were scanned but 4-9 probably won't be done anytime soon); then scanlation picks up again from volume 10.

Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji and Akagi are in a situation similar to that of One Outs.
