I'm looking for manga/anime/books/movies that focus on romance and politics. Something along the lines of Emma or if you've seen the movie, The Duchess. I'm looking for something with depth, not just "it's an arranged marriage but we worked things out and live happily ever after."

Something like Otoyomegatari works too.

Edit: For manga/light novels, it doesn't have to be scanlated.

Please and thank you!

AHA! Remind me exactly of Saiunkoku Monogatari Watch the anime, it is faster than the manga.

And maybe try the Romance + Politics category (I didn't even knew one existed till now o.O)

Hope you like it ~

Thanks, I'm familiar with that title but I've never really thought about watching/reading it. I'll give it a shot.
As for the category, I think prefer personal recommendations.

Hmm...

I don't know how any of these end, but the anime Saiunkoku Monogatari has a lot of political intrigue involved. It came to mind immediately. Scarlet Palace only has two chapters, but seems like it's going to have plenty of politics involved, too.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
For instance, it seems like the girl's older brother is determined -- seriously so -- to put her on the throne of the kingdom. I sincerely hope it doesn't turn out to be just another vacuous shoujo, since it seems promising.

To a much, much lesser degree, maybe Reimei no Arcana, Anatolia Story, Yami no Alexandra (though this one's not so much politics as.. the image of a noble family?), or Akagami no Shirayukihime. And even less than that, perhaps Migawari Hakushaku no Bouken, Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen, or Ruri no Kaze ni Hana wa Nagareru.

Though that's really just me pulling at straws. Most of it's that arranged marriage crap you didn't want. *coughs* XD

I love The Dutchess as well.

Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen, this has been in my wishlist for long time.. i haven't read it yet. I'm sure it has romance and politics, but i don't know about the depth..

Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen: Not a lot of depth, but I liked the story. I found it a fun and sweet romance.

Definitely Red River

+C: Sword and Cornett would work. There's stuff about succession to the throne, illegitimate heirs, concealing a country's dark past, discrimination against a minority, nobles vs. rulers power struggle etc. Plus, it's awesome smile

Hiiro no Isu You might try this one also

I you can take yaoi, Secret Diplomacy immediately comes to mind.

Cantarella is heavy on politics; the romance is all over the place, including brother/sister
Spoiler (highlight to view)
unfulfilled
and mild shounen-ai.

The Moon's Shadow by Catherine Asaro
King Kelson's Bride by Katherine Kurtz
A Brother's Price by Wen Spencer
Komarr and its sequel A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold

It's actually series like Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen and Akagami no Shirayukihime that I don't like lol.

Anyway thanks, I'll be checking out Scarlet Palace, Reimei no Arcana looks promising, and Yami no Alexandria.

Yeah, I always love movies like that.
Unfortunately the whole "it's an arranged marriage but we worked things out and live happily ever after" is referring to Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen. Thanks for the try though!

Actually Zettai Heiwa Daisakusen isn't about an arranged marriage [unless you count them arranging it themselves]. They wanted to end the war and so they FAKE getting engaged, they have to pretend to like each other in public, but in real life she hates him [He likes her]. The story follows them as she starts to realize he's not as bad as she first thought and all the political backdoor dealing and assassination attempts that happen because of them.

Slightly different... There were rather funny parts, but mostly it's a good story.

Not saying you have to change your mind, but I have thing about people not reading a story because they think it's something it's not.

Princess does look promising, though it's kinda worrying that it's on hiatus...
