I don't know about this reasoning; I mean, if he is to be introduced to a new media, and the first thing he reads is crappy, he's very likely to drop manga altogether. The first impression is really important. For example Pandora Hearts and FMA were the first manga I ever read (not counting Naruto, well), and if I didn't start with high quality manga, maybe I would have never been hooked to this world.

I grateful for your anime suggestions but I'm only looking for manga and comic series this time. I may come back with another request for anime suggestions, someday, but for now I'm only interested in stories on paper.

@_D_
Just because he avoids these topics doesn't mean that I'll do the same. He can't always shut his eyes to life's ugly side, and I intend to help him mature by inconspiciously feeding him increasingly higher doses of reality via manga and other media. I don't want to traumatise him, though, so he first manga should still fall into his comfort zone.

@Baalzebup and @natural-log
Thanks for the warnings. I'll better take the Gundam series off my list then.
Sorry, I won't consider any non-licensed manga for the above mentioned reasons. [Rurounin Kenshin]'s a good backup choice, thanks for the reminder.

@aacgnet
AHAHAH - no.

@RockoDyne
While the premise and the setting seem good, I've got a notion that Sidonia no Kishi isn't the most accessible story. There's this peculiar empty or rather lonely air that surrounds the protagonist like a bubble. It may be due to the unusual art style but that aside, the pacing's too odd. Hence, I'm sticking to the other recommendations. Thanks for trying.

@kitty1826x
The series' description doesn't sound bad but since I don't want to get him started on a story he cannot finish, I won't buy him Konjiki no Gash!!. Nevertheless, thanks for your effort.

@hkanz
I would gladly introduce the hitchhiker's guide to him along with Terry Pratchett's works - if he were willing to read a book. Another reason to get him started on manga...

@train93
I may not give him a masterpiece for the start but I'll make sure to provide him with some good, solid series to insure his interest. This way, he'll have enough time to get used to the medium and to cultivate his taste. After that there will be plenty of time to recommend the manga gems to him.

I'm going to purchase his present tomorrow so, if you are hit by a flash of inspiration, please let me know about your suggestion within the next 12 hours.

Trigun perhaps.

Just saw that this was suggested and rejected, never mind.

Of course he would be able to finish it, you'll just have to give the rest in a flashdrive laugh
But sorry my suggestion didn't help out. I really want to say give it a little more thought, as it really is kid friendly, but not too childlike where someone like me (24) couldn't enjoy it.

Let us know what you decided to buy. I hope he enjoys it.

In the end, I went with Tiger & Bunny (SAKAKIBARA Mizuki). Thank you, everyone, for your awesome input. I will report back to you once he's received his present.

We celebrated his birthday today. He seemed to like what he saw when he read the description and leafed through the pages. Thanks again for your help.
