I like this type of story myself, too, so I recommend Seikon no Qwaser and Ubel Blatt.
They do not revolve around revenge, but H.O.T.D., Black Cat, and Rurouni Kenshin are nice reads as well where a man witnesses the death of a loved one.

I usually try all three, actually, starting randomly, but preferably the middle. At least that is what I do in video games, so I do not miss anything.
I am a firm believer that you do not finish a game unless you have gathered and faced everything, making a 100% progress.

Breaking the fourth wall is kinda more of a technique than a cliche. It's used all the time in all sorts of media, and often in an a self -referential, "it's not like we're in X" type way.

You should give shounen a shot if you don't like drama.

I don't really understand your story, but the saddest endings are when someone close to the protagonist, or the main character himself, dies, like if they give up their own lives for the sake of others or speak their last words, not ones with some teen drama and flings.
