The first chapter was literally just exposition crammed into a battle scene. It would have been nice if not everything was explained during a fight scene like a writer explaining the story to their editor. That was sort of my biggest complaint about the whole thing.
Besides that, the story seemed like it could be interesting. If it had maybe 2 or 4 more chapters just to flesh out the characters a bit more it would have been nice.

A good read, if somewhat unfinished

As someone who coudn't get past the first volume of Segami-sensei's better known work, "Kagetora," Kamigurai was a pleasant surprise. The premise of a god eater, an artifact spirit and a miko as travelling companions who take down impure gods that are terrorizing villages hooked me from the outset. We get some solid action and the miko Amane is quite the opposite of the ditzy Yuki from Kagetora - not only is she the decision maker and can take care of herself, she even saves Kotarou at one point! Hurrah for strong females.
Unfortunately, the one aspect that let down what would otherwise have been a darn good read is the short length. Being restricted to a few chapters of a single volume meant that we are only given an introduction to Kotarou and Amane's adventures; there's little room for character development and the story is left painted in broad strokes. Still, Kamigurai is fun and a better 1-volume pick than most.
