i do like this series. it never even crossed my mind to compare it to Fruits Basket, although, i do see some slight similarities between the protagonists (their die hard optimism and navite' ) . Overall the atmospheres are different and shouldn't be compared to be appreciated.

This story gives off a very "furuba" feel. ^_^ I was happy with the ending of that series, and who Tohru ended up with.

In this series, I'm rooting for yuuri >=)
I can't wait for these characters to sink deeper into a good plot.

This work seems like it may end short, Takaya creates a lot of unanswered questions and only makes things clear towards the latter half of the chapters. This work does seem like a side story within Furuba, and characters do have resemblances to each other.

Takaya does create confusion for the reader for most part of these beginning chapters, and her comedy is lack, while there is more drama. Overall, I think the manga so far is a read when there is nothing more to read, but I have to hold off giving my full critique until vol. 1 is done.

I've only read the first volume, but it has been rather good so far. Nice art, nice plot, and it definitely has the potential to develop into something very captivating. Worth a read!

Even though it's just a few chapters in, Hoshi no Utau is a moving story. Chihiro and Kanade are probably the most interesting and original character in the series while unfortunately, the main girl, Sakuya ressembles Tohru far too much and her best friend, Hijiri ressembles a combination of Hanajima and Uotani so that's the only down-side. But the art and story-telling redeems these faults by a lot~ It is by far on a great start.

Offical English Publication?

Will this series ever be picked up by an English Publisher? I'd love to buy this!
It's great and heartbreaking. I feel for all the characters. Before suffering depression I hated the MC's "love rival" but now I sympathize with her.
I cried for everyone and this story is so sweet that I really want to buy the volumes if they ever are released in English.

Disappointed

After how well Fruits Basket turned out to be I was looking forward to reading this series. Oh dear, such a dissappoinment it turned out to be. The story is too slow, the characters aren't as likeable or interesting, forced drama/humor the doesn't feel natural. And the heroine whatever her name is (show's how forgetful her character is) is an exact copy of Tohru from Fruits Basket.

The series isn't bad bad but it's not good either. Best to lower your expectations otherwise you'll be disappointed like I was. Now I know why this series is nowhere near as popular as Fruits Basket was.

This story is worth reading, lol. I found myself crying and emotional after reading some of the chapters. I was surprised because at the beginning the story was really dull but if you persist, the story gets more interesting and hopefully by chapter 10 or 15+ you'll be hooked.

I never really got into Fruits Baskets...the later volumes weren't particularly good, and overall it was too cheesy for me, anyways.

As for this one, after reading the first 6 chapters and skimming the later ones, I simply can't bring myself to like it. It gives a very aloof impression to readers, in my humble opinion. I guess I just can't connect with any of the characters. I think the author is trying to create something deep, without knowing what deep really is.

I'll give it a 4 for now, but I don't think I'll be back to update the rating, though.

I'm sure there are people who enjoy this, but I'm not one of them. Sorry.

I've read up to chapter 14 but it took me up 'till now to realize why Chihiro "hates" Sakuya! Before it was really bothering me that she was obviously head over heels for him but he was oddly cold to her while the only thing she did to him was worry on his behalf. Still, I really like it and chapter 14 cleared up a lot of confusion with Chihiro.
I still miss Fruits Basket and was kind of expecting Hoshi wa Utau to replace that void in my life and it's almost working. Everything is really interesting and Natsuki Takaya draws really well smile
