I'd say Natsume Yuujinchou. It has a male lead (who is rather effeminate, though) and instead of being about romance it's more of a slice-of-life where he deals with his ability to see ghosts, and the friendships he slowly creates while coming to terms with being "weird" and opening up to the people around him etc. etc. It also has some nice comedy, and some very touching moments.

A lot of Morinaga Ai's manga, too. Sometimes they're about relationships, but they're always more comedy-based and at times have some pretty filthy, un-ladylike humor--which is why they're so great. The characters aren't generally cliche for shoujo manga (the boys are often feminine and/or wimpy and the girls tend to be weird and badass) and nothing (including the romance) is ever really flowery or sweet.

However, if you don't like shoujo "style" I'd also recommend going for Josei manga instead, which is aimed at older women. It has great series like #000000 - Ultra Black, Amatsuki, switch, etc.

Hmm... I kinda agree with Natsume Yuujinchou; it's a very thought-provoking and interesting story. It's very character-centered, like all of Midorikawa Yuki's works. Boys may find it a bit slow (I'm thinking of my older brother here, rather than my younger one, who would adore this), but it's really an amazing series that guys looking for a solid story and good characters, as well as some comedy - would certainly enjoy.

Personally, I think that a good manga can be enjoyed by anyone. But here are a few I have seen well-received by male readers here and on other forums:
Aishiteruze Baby
Beauty Pop
Dengeki Daisy
Kamisama Hajimemashita
Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Natsume Yuujinchou
Ouran High School Host Club
Penguin Revolution
Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume

I also recommend these non-romantic-comedy shoujos:
Coelacanth
Flat (AOGIRI Natsu)
Flower of Life
Kokoro ni Hana wo!!
Nemuranai Machi kara
Safe Again Today

Happy gender-demographic-busting! smile

For comedy, maybe Heaven!!, Perfect Girl Evolution (this one basically makes fun of the whole shoujo genre), and Oresama Teacher
For supernatural, Dokebi Bride and Shinrei Tantei Yakumo - Akai Hitomi wa Shitteiru
For something serious, Life

I don't recommend (since i've seen people list these)
Vampire Knight, Dengeki Daisy, Kamisama Hajimemashita, Fushigi yugi, Hana yori dango, Ouran High School Host Club (I enjoyed the anime but the manga makes me want to vomit), Hot Blooded Woman, Skip Beat, Beauty Pop, Lovely Complex, Saver, Superior, Special A, Shinobi Life, Koukou Debut (has one of the worst female characters eva!)
