Are there any mangas that you didn't know about but for some reason decided to give it a try and was totally surprised how awesome it is ?
To me there probably a few but one that always comes up is Angel Densetsy. I don't know why I decided to try it but I had a blast reading it, anything that can put a smile on my face is a plus with me.

yeaaa
i was totally surprised when i read Aishiteruze Baby and flowers of evil
if you read aishiteruze baby's description you'll get the wrong idea(i thought the guy will fall in love with the baby haha)
and when i read about flowers of evil it sounded like a cliched incest manga but it completely blew me away...it was so deep and intense i definitely wasn't expecting that

those 2 easily made their way up my list of favourites

Onani Master Kurosawa comes to mind. Totally didn't expect it to be so serious. I thought it would be full of ecchi crap but thankfully, it didn't.

There's also Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Not gonna spoil it, but there's a reason why it has the moret posts than any other anime on 2chan. To those who would try this, anime>manga by a long shot.

I second Onani Master Kurosawa. Much deeper than I thought it'd be, plus it has some surprising twists.

One Piece - I watched the dub, which cut out and changed a lot of stuff, so I only watched the original anime out of boredom. I was shocked. Such moving scenes, such an interesting plot, I got addicted right away. This was the anime, but it later led me to the manga, so. ^^;

Dragon Ball - I enjoyed the anime more or less when I was younger, so I checked out the manga and got a reaction similar to the one above. I was particularly impressed by the lack of fillers in the manga.

I'm so glad they didn't mention in the description that Sebastian's a demon, because I just loved that surprise.

The Legend of Sun Knight (Novel) - I wasn't too keen on starting it because it seemed to deal with a setting that needs detailed explanations, but I got hooked by the prologue, when I couldn't stop laughing from start to finish.

Kimi Ni Todoke - My friend loved it, and I didn't really think anything of it because he's generally not into the same kind of manga as me. Then one day I saw it here while searching, had a look at it and bought the first volume, which really impressed me.

Kimikiss - Various Heroines - This also turned out to be one of my favourites, but when I bought it I thought it would be a bit average. Was glad to be wrong.

I was really biased against dragon ball, it was probably for the same reason those who never watched naruto say it sucks (yeah I was a snob then), anyway after reading just one chapater i was really hooked, I never finished it but it showed me why Akira Toriyama is such a beloved mangaka in japan. Dr. Slump is great too.
Is it me or did his style became really blocky ? he used to have really smooth lines.

Basara and Red Eyes
Someone recommended me to read them, my first impressions on them were bad...the art turned me off and I wondered why they have so many good reviews. It took me a couple of tries and a few chapters before I got hooked up into them. And now, they're my top favourites!

Vol. 4 onwards... Hapi Mari!
I hate smutty shoujo mangas, I even dropped this manga after reading 4 chapters. After picking up the part where..

They finally consumated their marriage, the manga surprised me with the sudden plot change of their lives as married couple. I came to love this manga.

As for ANYTHING that happened before vol. 4, I pretend they never exist in the plot.

Mushishi. I thought this would be boring, cliche, and just another story about a guy who can see ghosts and goes around exorcising them -- probably picking up a girlfriend to travel with him along the way. I put off reading it for the longest time; but when I did, simply out of curiosity...WHAM! Within two volumes, it became my all-time favourite manga. I've read hundreds of titles since then, of a wide range of genres, and nothing has managed to charm me quite as much. I've never even read a novel I liked to that extent.

Noramimi is another good one. Who'd have thought that a fantastical slice-of-life comedy about a bunch of weird creatures and the children they befriend could be so smart and insightful?

Olimpos also succeeded in astonishing me. Once you look beneath the surface, you realize how philosophical the characters' "silly, idle chatter" really is.

This. Along with:
Ubel Blatt. Thought it was just a sex manga, but it turned out to be great.
Midori no Hibi. Amazing in my opinion. Great characters, with a nice romance, despite it's concept of a girl on a guy's hand.
Angel Densetsu. Interested in the concept, but it far surpassed my expectations, and I was on the floor laughing many times.
