I am looking for a good sci-fi that will take me a while to read.
Specifically speaking, I would like it to have at least two volumes scanlated. As for content, I would prefer something in the lines of space travel/exploration/life. I do not want any mech mangas or ship-to-ship warfare mangas. They by no means have to lack action however.
My lists are public if you want to cross reference anything, although I don't recall reading many mangas of this genre.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe Planetes (4 volumes, completely scanlated)
Seen the anime, will check out the manga, thanks.

I've not read it either (seen the anime).... but some of the reviews say the ending's better in the manga.
Cheerz!!

How come there seem to be so many animes that involve life in space but so little mangas? Am I just having trouble finding them or do they lack existence?

I can't think of anything right now, only Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, but it's not probably what you are looking for. Maybe you can try it anyway and see if you enjoy it. Same for Aqua. Maybe it's more suited Diotima, but it's not so good imho. I know other titles but for everyone there is an anime that's better so I don't think they could be useful. And I think that if you're asking for manga like them, you are probably a fan of anime like that (there are many) and you already watched them, anyway...
I think your description fits so much "Crest of the Stars" (only the first serie tough, and maybe the third) and "Mugen no Ryvius". I really love them, so I felt obligated so suggest them (if you didn't watch them, try them) .
There's also the manga Seikai Trilogy which came from the first three series of "Crest of the Stars" that at least is translated, but I didn't read it, and I really don't know if it's as good as manga.
Sorry if I wasn't of much help, but your request is really a tough one ^^. If you want to know other anime like that, I can add, but for manga that's all I can come up.

Thanks, will check out Diotima and Mugen no Ryvius.
Ive watched (and loved) the entirety of the Sekai Trilogy (anime) and will have to give the manga a go.
As for Aqua, I found the anime insanely slow but I was told that I just didn't watch enough of it. I will give the manga a go and hope I can get into it .
Also, I wouldn't mind if you listed the animes that fit my description. Even though I have probably seen most of them, I might be surprised.

Well, as said before Mugen no Ryvius is a must. In the genre imho only "Seikai no Monshou" is better (and only because it has the best female lead in the all the anime history, Lafiel). It's a sort of "Lord of the Fireflies" made into sci-fi (watch over the first two episode, because the story practically starts in the third episode).
Then, Hoshi no Koe is a good short, 'cause Shinkai Makoto is a genius (it's not his best work tough imho).
Another must is Martian Successor Nadesico. It has been voted by fans the best anime show of all time, so I don't think it needs a presentation.
Other two nice series are Uchuu no Stellvia and the two series of Vandread. More slice of life the first, more ecchi/comedy the second one. There are mecha battles in Vandread, but it's basically a comedy serie, so I don't think they are too invasive.
There is also Uninhabited Planet Survival but it is set all the time on a deserted planet so it's not what you are really looking for.
Also Ginga Tetsudou Monogatari and everything related.
That's all I can come up with anything else for now.

If you're looking for a space anime, try Heroic Age.... and I second Hoshi no Koe.
I'm sure there are many others.... but most involve mecha.

You should try Blame! It's only 10 vols but it's not half bad. It has a sequel and and prequel if I remember correctly, though I haven't read either of those.
I second Heroic Age. A great series indeed. Don't know about the manga, since I've only seen the anime.
