Tartufo, you have very tortured tastes.

But what is there in the manga realm that comes anywhere near those leading men?

Well, some of Chiho Saitou's heroes bear some similarities.

They're girls, but Simone of Shiroi Heya no Futari, Saint Juste of Oniisama E, and Maya of Maya's Funeral Procession come close to Heathcliff in terms of tortured craziness.

And that's all I've got.

I think maybe Mars West, the lead in Gold could fit one of your descriptions.
and definitely Jake in Silver, who is like Erik and Mr. Rochester in a way.

@comel, you are a perfect GOD of manga recommendations. *gathers all those raws*

@akari_mizunsashi - lol, yes! Tortured tastes! But at least that lends my experiences a certain variety. biggrin Thank you so much for recommending those female characters... I didn't realize it until now, but you're right... Why do the character templates for Darcy/Heathcliff/Rochester/Erik have to be applied in male characters alone? As long as the traits match, the character's sex doesn't really matter...

So I'd like to add that I'll also accept female characters from anyone that can recommend them. Thanks! smile

@chineserider, you're right, those guys do count! I've rad Silver, at least, and you're quite right about Jake. In fact, both male leads could count in different capacities... eyes

Thanks also to everyone else who recommended! I'll definitely have a look at your recs!

I feel I posted so late but I recommend Aishite Kudasai, Sensei by KURUMATANI Haruko which held me captivated. It`s not victorian or whatnot but it`s about this guy obsessed with his childhood crush; it kept my heart racing (seriously) it`s just that good.

although what sucks is that it isn`t revealed why he`s psychotic or anything; the story is more or less showing how one can fall for seductiveness.

the male lead is seductive; at the same time there are hints indicating the feelings of a lonely child... so he`s more or less like the phantom of the opera compared to those other guys (who I like just as much) with a bit of Heathcliff (with the whole valendictorian image and the fact he`s devoted to the main female lead...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
there`s also a part when he uses his fake girlfriend in a way like how Heathcliff uses Isabella Linton -- different intentions and goals but the fact they both have the capability to be cruel to everyone except their love interests err-- obssessions is pretty cristal clear

seriously this is extremely seducing (and not smutty) I hope you`ll like it biggrin

*high fives, girls* partners in crimes

I seriously think Heathcliff is hot (and he's not even my type) and people think that I'm disturbed and that lines you have there is my favorite quote in that entire book.

And Mr Darcy... oh... this was the first literature book that I read although I seriously had problems with my English and though I had to open my dictionary back and forth, I really wanted to read it.

And I cried when I read Phantom of the Opera and that was my favorite parts to that you have there in block quote.... wooo....

anyhow, try this "For you I would become the devil"

Also other recs:
Show Princess: the guy is as sick as Heathcliff or should I say guys
100% Perfect Girl
[m]Watashi no Magane kun[/m]
Ingenuo somehow reminds me of Mr Darcy (proud and won't admit that he loves the female lead) and Erik although he's not exactly withdrawing from social life
Glass Mask has Mr Darcy and Erik-esque about it. But it still not finished yet and it'll take forever to finish it. I read since years ago!!

Who cares about manga when you can read books lol bigrazz

Ok I immediately thought of all the books by Johanna Lindsay, she writes the BEST HISTORICAL ROMANCE novels EVER! Definitely check out her books and I love her Malory series, cause you are introduced to new couples every book but since its a series you can also see how your other couples are doing :3

Btw I wanted to ask where is Mr.Heathcliff from?? From your original playboy description of him I think I'm in love LOL.

ChocoKun: Mr Heathcliff is from Wuthering Heights
It's a must read for romance sucker. I really think that the words are full of passion and I wonder if someone mess the words up a little bit, it can sound like the cheesiest novel ever written (possibly in the history). There's a thin line between being romantic and sounding like a casanova

!! I think I found one that might work... (though it may be a little early to say) but Dmitri from Kuro Bara Alice can be an Erik-like figure... he runs into misfortune, deems himself as unworthy/impure and denies himself the pleasures of being in love. He wants atonement, but he's doing it in such a tortured, round-about way... gaaah! Just read the manga... it's so deliciously dark, I can't stop!! But I must, since I can't read Japanese (but the scanlations are at a pretty good point!!! teeheheee...)

Tenshi no Uta (NISHIDA Higashi) - for Heathcliff or Phantom of the Opera. not sure i havent read the books and/ or seen the movie/s.

Flowers of Evil - Mr. Rochester turns into Heathcliff

loki from Reimei no Arcana can fit the phantom and mr. knightly

Vampire Girl with a sort of backwards twisted repeat of heathcliff over and over

It's probably not the best connection, but the two lead males from Vampire Knight both have that high and mighty, not worthy of love, but would die without it, type of persona, although both from different perspectives and motivations.

It's a slow type of read, and always refers back to previous chapters, so keep a wiki page open or read from sagakure.livejournal.com (she has a running commentary that helps explain everything that's happened so far. The only downfall is that you have to dig a little to find the scanlations and she only goes back to ch43).

DARCY. OH YES. Oh, cruel world, why is Darcy fictional?

Darcy so darn perfect, it's hard to find another fictional character equivalent of him (I say it's nearly impossible), but I say Arima from Kare Kano is half-way there- the smart, polite, handsome one, but guards himself in order to shield his "true self", because he's just so darn lonely and scared. And he's just adorable when he's awkward... Not the perfect Darcy, but comes close.

Nodame Cantabile's Chiaki? Mature, strict, and proud when it comes to music, but a really softie on the inside. The nearest I can think of a Darcy.

i totally second flowers of evil...the guy is sooooo heathcliff-ish..now that i think about it the endings are kind of similar too
second kare kano for darcy <3 it gets so dramatic
if you want to destroy the world too...heathcliff

and i'll add thomas no shinzou for erik

i love everyone on this topic please keep it going bigrazz
oh and i'd like to add rhett from gone with the wind to the hall of honour

EDIT:
for all wuthering heights fans...try "my cousin rachel" by daphne du maurier...no,try EVERYTHING by daphne they totally have the "wuthering heights" feeling to them...plus all her main characters are heathcliff-like

for darcy fans try the diary of bridget jones its loosely based on pride and prejudice
also colin firth plays mr darcy in both movies biggrin
