Okay, first time doing this, so sorry if it's in the wrong place...

I would like any story (manga, anime, novel, movie, etc) where the main character is AFRAID TO FALL IN LOVE! And not a "I'll never fall in love" --> he's hot! --> I finally understand "love at first sight <3" --> The End, kind of story. I want something where the mc resists falling in love out of a sense of self-preservation. Someone who has a lot of pride and has a lot of difficulties opening up or trusting others would be wonderful too.

Again, any genre ( except horror and hentai, not that I think anyone would be able to find a character like this in a horror or hentai, lol) and in any media form. Oh, and I can only read English fluently so please don't recommend things in a foreign language.

Thanks so much in advance. smile

If you don't mind yaoi, I highly recommend Totally Captivated and all of its following and concluding doujinishi sequels ! It has all that you're looking for precisely and its amazing!

Totally Captivatedhttp://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=13353
Sequel 1http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=42721
Sequel 2 http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=62188
Ending- Grand Finale :http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=62819

As the plot developments the main characters characters also unravel to where you come to understand their actions especially the playboy's known as Ewon whose character was built on self preservation due to his past, even to the point of preserving himself from the ultimate fall:falling in love! Its a great manga with enough humor, drama, and less of a hollow plot and shallow characters than most other yaois and shoujos to keep most readers satisfied and is certainly far better and less cliche! It has great sustenance and please Don't be put off by both of their stubborn personalities! Innately the subtle struggle of the manwha deals with with his fear of falling love and it becomes increasingly more obvious that it roots from some insecurity
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
( that mind you is not as common as a fickle romantic love sickness from an old lover)
! Though it takes time, both of them mature for the better and slowly as you read, you find yourself rooting for a pure romance! Excuse my pun, but personally, the characters, the art, the chibis, the humor, the plot and the romance left me Totally Captivated smile
The last Yaoi, I read a few years ago that was slightly similar and almost as great if not equal or better was Haito Diamond. You could try that too. http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=2400

Lonely wolf lonely sheep had that, one of the mc's is attracted to girls but believes no one will accept her for it, so she has the mentality that love and the perfect partner aren't meant for people like her.

You wonderful, wonderful people!!!!

@Shinigami.Doll: I've had kimi no sei on my wishlist for a few weeks now, I was going to wait to see if it was updated, but I started reading it right away after you recommended it and YES! it was exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you so much!!!!

@nezushi, Sherryl, Snassidee: I remember watching the anime of We Were There forevers ago. But the details are kind of fuzzy so I'll go read the manga now. smile Honey Bitter is on my list and I will definitely read it within the next few days!

@Netgie11: Read before and loved it, though the relationship with the step dad was a little.... Haito Diamond seems to deal with the seedy side of life, but I'll try it. Thanks!!

@Caozhi: My first ever yuri!!! Seems very interesting! Can't wait to read it!!

9 Banme no Musashi She has a good reason to avoid falling in love. But rather than afraid to fall in love... I think it's more like afraid to stay with it. She's not as weak as some other females who simply refuse to face with their feelings whenever a wall is in front of them.

Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang will fit as well, pretty perfectly... but you'll have to hope for someone to translate it. There's 2 volumes atm of raw mangas or should I say manhuas. Other than that, there's a completed novel series in Chinese. Who knows? You might be able to find the novel in English somewhere.

Since you said ANY media form, I'll include dramas as well.

Jotei : There's a manga to it too I think, dunno if it's scanlated or not.
Ryusei no Kizuna : I *think* it fits... memory's blurry on this, so whether she ended up with him or not can't remember
Yoshitsune : You might be able to find some in here. Can't remember since it was quite long after all, and I wasn't paying as much attention to the females as my dear Yoshitsune-sama~ lol. Great drama though.
Kimi wa Petto : Kinda fits I suppose? There's a manga too.

Reading your description made me spontaneously think of Dengeki Daisy, Koibana! - Koiseyo Hanabi and Aniki wa Tsunayoshi!. I'm not sure, if these may suit your taste, but ...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Dengeki Daisy can be of interest, because the male counterpart of the female main character tries not to fall any deeper for her, since he's feeling joint guilt for the death of her brother. Koibana! - Koiseyo Hanabi can be worth a look, because the female main character actually hates boys, is therefore irritated by the guy around her - and he is initially in a relationship with someone else. Last but not least, it's also a serious relationship and the fear of losing the beloved (not by blood related) sister in Aniki wa Tsunayoshi!, which makes the male counterpart - more or less - trying to ignore any deeper feelings within the storyline.

You've probably read this, but Skip Beat (manga/anime/drama) is a perfect fit.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It has a slow romance that builds up near the latest chapters (high 100s)
, but essentially Kyouko doesn't want to ever fall in love again due to her childhood friend crushing her heart in the first episode/chapter.

Another obvious pick is Orange Marmalade (webcomic). She's a vampire that believes humans could never love her for what she is, so she distances herself from everybody.

Boku no Hatsukoi wo Kimi ni Sasagu (manga/live-action movie) is about a boy who doesn't want his childhood friend to love him (even though he's also in love with her) because he's going to die before he turns 19 (chronic illness). The LA movie ends differently from the manga.

Kimi ga Uso o Tsuita (manga) is about a girl who suddenly wakes up from a car accident and is able to physically see when people are lying (they turn black). One of my personal favorites!

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi (manga/anime) is yaoi. He never wants to love because he was scarred by his first love during his school days. He coincidentally meets this so-called person at his new job and refuses to love him. Although it sounds like he gives in right away, he surprisingly keeps his hard-headed stubbornness for quite some time.

A book that fits this is Willow by Julia Hoban. She cuts herself because she cannot forgive herself for accidentally killing her parents in a car accident. She believes her brother hates her and that plays a big role of her not being able to enjoy life. It's very heart-wrenching and depressing but extremely well-written.
