I only recently started reading manga and i don't know that many series so i'd like to ask your opinion on some old or not so popular good mangas.
Any type will do but i do prefer either seinen or shounen ( please no mecha stuff ).

I recommend 20th century boys. A seinen manga made by the creator of monster. Another good one with a sort of subdued feel isYokohama Kaidashi Kikou . Both are rather beefy reads but worth it.

when they say old, they mean 1980s old.

I just picked some good ones. I took into account that he said he was new to manga and just picked what I had stumbled on a whiles ago.

Well I don't know if you would read Astroboy even though I don't count it as "mecha" due to the robots, or also if you've already read it. It's about 20 volumes in the Dark Horse version, but personally rather than read a bunch of or all the little stories, I feel the best part of these series is in about volumes 3, and 6 through 9. I haven't read volumes 1 and 2 though, but I read until the last volume.

Space Adventure Cobra is a good oldies. And anything else from this mangaka.
On martial art side Kenji is an excellent oldies. Double pity that this manga havent got scanlated and translated into ENglish yet.
Kotaro (the old arcs) is another funny martial art manga.

Living Game is freakin' awsome!
I's is also excellent.
Love Hina.
Video Girl Ai.
All the above reduced me to tears on many occasions! Not a good look if you're reading at work!!
If I can take one from 2000+ then SaiKano (2000) was almost impossible to read more than a chapter at a time. Emotional?! Redefined the term!
