Hentai Labeling

Poll
Should the "Hentai" and "Adult" tags always go hand-in-hand, even though it is redundant?

Okay, this is something I always wondered about, but why are most of the Hentai labeled here with "Hentai"... AND "Adult". That makes no sense. It kind of feels redundant to me... o__o;; So, all manga genres that have sex scenes should be labeled as Adult? Then include smut, yaoi and yuri as well...

To me, "Adult" always meant a manga that handles sexually mature topics or has sexually mature material, shown in a provocative/'sleazy' way.

For example, Bradherley no Basha was tagged as Adult (I untagged it), but I feel it isn't appropriate to tag it as such. It deals with traumatizing rape experiences which deserves the "Mature" tag, since that handles mature topics such as rape. I don't see anything "Adult"-like about it. It doesn't "glorify" sex nor look at it in a positive light. And whoever tagged Oyasumi Punpun as "Adult" is doing it wrong. >_> Again another manga, Sidooh isn't "Adult" either. One of the brothers gets raped, iirc. These kind of manga are using sexual situations to propel the characters' development forward, instead of Adult manga where it doesn't really serve a purpose. These adult situations are used as a device to show something to the reader and aren't the focus point of the manga.

Bleh, I'm sick of manga getting mislabeled so much...!

Gantz is an example of how you should tag an "Adult" series. The main protagonist bangs girls spontaneously throughout the story and lots of adult situations take place. Kind of displaying that it's the "cool" thing to do or something. Like I mentioned before, it didn't really do anything to further the plot or the character's development. none I can't explain myself quite well, can I? ... Another example is Übel Blatt where the main lead shamelessly sleeps with random women too.

Girlfriend features a lot of adult situations, so it gets tagged as "Adult", despite that some of those adult situations further the characters' development, and instead of making the manga superficial it actually gives it more depth.

Nyatto! and Oretama don't deserve any explanation as to why they're adult. And Yuutai Nova fits the bill as well, even though it's more mature than the former two.

Yuri that feature a lot of adult scenes, like Maka-Maka, and yet still has some depth (so no smex yuri or something) deserve the "Adult" tag too.

Hmm... this has become a rant on how to label Adult series. laugh
This site drastically needs some more clarification on the genres.

KEEP IN MIND, THE MAIN ISSUE IS THE LABELING OF HENTAI.

The "adult" and "mature" need better definitions.
But that's already been discussed with no results.

Because that's how you see it. You can't really blame people for mislabeling, since the two are pretty misleading.
As they are now, they're particularly the same.

On the other hand, you can tell them apart. I guess.
But it's a very thin line.

About the hentai thing... Some people might not know what hentai is. When the see "adult" they might get a better understanding about the context.

'Adult' or 'Mature' to me mean like a rated 'R' movie, and I'm not sure how those two are differentiated. Adult (or Mature) situations, language and violence doesn't necessarily mean sexual situations, though it can. Rape is Adult, but so are thems of bigotry or brute violence/gore.

I'm not sure what the difference is between Adult and Mature. Mentally I would probably label something like Nana to Kaoru as Mature (for bondage themes), but not Adult, and I'm not quite sure how to explain why I think that way. I'm sure others would label it both, or the other way around (Adult, but not Mature). I don't know what the right answer is.

Hentai to me is just that- something that comes from a Hentai publication and is basically purely sexual for the sake of being sexual. A Hentai can, in a few rare cases, also be Adult and/or Mature, but in most causes I wouldn't not think it should be labeled as such.

I'm more liable to consider labeling anything Lolicon or Shotacon as 'Adult' than I am straight, consenting Hentai.

It would seem to me more prudent to label shounens or seinens or shoujos or joseis with the 'adult' or 'mature' (or 'smut') labels. And it would seem logical to presume (or should be?) that Hentai means "sexual in its nature" - by definition.

Fortunately, I'm not the one choosing labels for series. I'm just throwing in $0.02.

Should be separate.
What my brain tells me when I see the tags:

Tagged Hentai — Uh, okay. Aliens and loli catgirls banging at page 4.

Tagged Adult — What's with all this Samoan cuisine!? Wait, wait, there comes the hot scene... Hell no, cops busted them before they got there. Oh wait, prison sexorz! No, no, you don't need to take her on a date!

I agree with Liria and Dr. Love, Hentai mean sexual so it's redundant to call hentai adult. yet it's usefull if they could find other way to filter like happy sex ( consensual) and rape or bondage.

On the other hand, for me adult not necessarily means sexual or hentai, it can also include horror. For example, After School Nightmare is labelled horror but for me it's not scary. So if I see horror and adult, it's a warming, which means for me that's it is very scary.

It's the same for yaoi, sometimes there's adult but I don't know why. For instance, [m]Kunshu no Ai wa Yoru ni Hana Saku Manga[/m] is less smutty than some other which are not adult, like MUKIZU JA IRARENEE.

That's why I appreciate some scanlators who differentiate: hard yaoi, yaoi or soft yaoi. I find it more appropriate eyes confused

Well it's very complicated!!!!
