it's been in my wish list for a very long time and after a lot of recommendations i read it. it's a very good manga, very like a classic novel. though, it didn't show much of the hardship they went through and not much drama.
His mother was unexpected twist. And i really like the German couple ) i really like to read further, what happened to them later on. especially what happened on her society debut and after the wedding /:-)

i've been reading this manga like a millionth times, (well, maybe just about a hundred), and i am still moved by it. the mangaka has excellent way to deliver the story. she pays attention to historical detail, she gives pauses between acts, and she lets many panels without dialog: its like she lets the drawing told you the story; and its executed very nicely. pay attention to characters' eyes, hand gestures, body postures, and the succession through panels; nothing is too much, and nothing is too little. all is smooth! when you enjoy the unwritten words, the story became more and more enjoyable as you flip (or click) the pages. just totally recommended.
Amazing manga!

This manga really fleshes out the setting and gets you attached to the characters. Though the story may seem kind of simple it's sweet and heartwarming. Probably the best romance manga written.
(By the way, "mono no aware" should be added to the categories of both Emma and it's sequel)

Emma was such a good read, I finished it in one sitting. I loved the few but extremely tender sweet moments Emma and William go through. The story was so different from the cliche romances, yet I found myself gushing over them, sigh.
In my opinion, one of the best mangas I've read.

One thing I like the most from this series is how the mangaka make each chapter episodic, unlike other/most mangas where the next chapter is just like direct continuation from the previous chapter. I also like how the mangaka draw each panel with no dialogs. They show how a picture can convey more meaning than thousands words
Oh, and also the details of English in 19th century, from the culture, any new invention at that time. I guess, the details alone are enough to mesmerize anyone.
Emma and Emma Bangaihen both worth the read.

I first read the first volume, and then because I didn't quite like the whole thing I haven't touched it for like months. Although I quite like the art and all the little details on history, I agree with Azari02, Emma lacks characters depth. I just don't feel the romance between Emma and William, and also I too, don't feel attached to the heroine Emma. Maybe because in the story she was made to be elegant? But she's just too timid, for me she doesn't look like a charming girl. I then tried to read Emma again, volume 1-2 still didn't interest me. I began to take interest after (minor spoilers) Emma works for the Molders family. I even like Hans more than William! Oh well.. But my favorite character must be Dorothea, she's gorgeous! If you like historical romance manga you should give this a try. I give this an 8 mainly for all the accurate historical facts. The ending really doesn't satisfy me..*sigh*..

It felt like a Jane Auste novel came to life! ^^ It was good, very good but I wish the ending was a bit more....satisfactory. I was still debating to myself whether their love was actually 'love' and until the end I couldn't find the answer. I still don't know.

Pros: It was a decent read... I really enjoyed the whole "victorian" or English feel... It really reminded me of Jane Austen's stories and her attack on England's societal and aristocratic problems such as Price and Prejudice. Some scenes were very Romantic and the story intrigued me.
Cons: I felt as if the characters didn't have enough depth to them. The development of Emma wasn't as strong as most Romance mangas. However the main problem of the manga was it felt quite anticlimactic. In the last 10 chapters the story felt much more rushed than all of the former chapters, it was a sudden change of pace. After the end I felt a lot of things hadn't been taken care of and certain aroused plot obstacles just dissipated. The ending needed to be stronger and less abrupt.

I somehow found this manga after randomly browsing romance mangas on this website -and I was soooo surprised, because I remembered reading this in my public library about 2 years before I even knew what manga and anime meant and what they were! I really liked this series, even though I usually don't like historical stuff in general : ) I think that this was a nice series overall. : )

Although I have to say I prefer Hans over William. That guy is Darcy incarnated. Of course love will prevail and she'll end up with William, but hey.. And now looks like they're having an affair through letters BAHAHAHA I LOVE THISS
