Well, let's say I'm kinda bored of everyone-happy end. So today, I'll be glad if you can recommend some manga where this doesn't happen, meeting the following criteria:

1. Romance has to be the main or take a major part in the story.

2. The couple get separated for one of these reasons:

a. The evilness win.
b. They agree about it. Simply they realized their love can't be anymore.
c. Couldn't overcome hardships.
d. Destiny. Lots of mishaps (like a very bad soap opera with no happy ending).

3. The separation isn't due to the lack of love.

4. Don't fit the request if:

a. One of them dies (like in the greatest work of Shakespeare)
b. If one of them ends up with someone else.

For me both would be normal endings. I want them to settle up things before that, and if they still want to die or hunt another mate, it's perfect.

So, summarizing: (Bittersweet end)+(Star-Crossed Lovers) - (Tragedy) = biggrin

Good examples (not in a particular order):

Nana
Paradise Kiss
Cappuccino
Peach Girl<---This one kinda sucks in characters, but has the type of drama I want.
Byousoku 5 Centimeter<--- Watched the movie
The Vision of Escaflowne<---I suppose, watched the anime looong ago.
Kanojo no Namida ga Yuki da Toshitara

Any genre is fine excepting BL, GL and H.
Completely scanlated or at least active.
Short length would be a plus.
No open endings!

I already checked out the Star-Crossed Lovers tag, and I'm hoping for more specific suggestions. If you know some novel/book/tale/movie/whatever, is welcome too!

oh, honey and clover but i watched the anime, though i heard someone said the manga is just about the same, but im not sure. Still, i think it pretty much fits all that, at least the anime does.

Actually, I kinda read Honey and Clover. I've got scattered pieces from time to time that I almost forgot what happened >.< . I really tried to watch the anime, but I prefer the manga. I think it's time to retake it and doing it properly.

Anyone else? smile

What i'm going to suggest is GL but not a blatant one.
Blue is a great piece of work, very down to earth, very realistic. In a way it reminded me of Honey and Clover which ended up becoming one of the best stories ever.

Melo Holic
Otaku no Musume-san if you focus on the one that likes him
Kanojo no Namida ga Yuki da Toshitara

If dieing was allowed, I'd have a bunch more but that's it sad

It seems I failed to read your criteria carefully, and I thought you requested the death of a spouse... If you ever change your mind about that, than feel free to read the stories below...lol

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Oh, I'm always a fan of those kind of stories! :D Just don't read too many or you might get depressed...Here are my suggestions complete with descriptions!

Rec - Kimi ga Naita Hi
Aizawa Minami is a girl who has never cried in her life. She's awkward with her feelings, and she carries a camcorder to film everything she likes. Because of her quirks, she's labeled as a freak and alienated by her classmates.
Satoru is her classmate and a recently retired teen actor who understands her. They quickly become friends, but what Minami doesn't know is that Satoru is hiding his secret from the world...

(A LOT better than how the summary makes it sound. I highly recommend this one. Made me burst into tears because of the bittersweet ending. I don't cry easily xD )

Sekai no Hate
Azusa used to be bullied to the point where she begged her parents to move. In her new school, she's asked out by the most popular guy, Kasuga-kun. Afraid of being bullied again, she agrees.
But, she finds herself falling in love with Kawaguchi-kun and his strength. He gives her hope that she might finally break free from her past and find true love, but Kasuga-kun stares at her possessively with murderous eyes...

(Main female protagonist is pathetic, but you really can't seem hate her. :S Murder involved, a pretty deep plot. Incomplete)

Deep Love - Ayu no Monogatari
Ayu, a 17-year-old high school student, believes neither in a future nor the happiness it could bring her. By selling herself, she tries to justify her existence, which is as bleak as her heart - it’s devoid of joy, sorrow, love. Not until her encounter with a kind-hearted old lady does Ayu begin to realize the true meaning of happiness…

(This series made me die a little inside...Especially the sequels. Amazing story though.)

Solanin
Slice of life with a young couple, Inoue Meiko and Taneda Shigeo, and how everyday occurrences affect their lives. Meiko begins contemplating whether freedom without purpose is really the same thing as boredom. This is a retelling of a very common real life situation, perhaps enjoyable for an older fanbase. Art is different, there are no anime-esque deformations here.

(Not an extremely emotional story, but it matches your criteria so I thought I'd let you give this one a try.)

Ok, according to the comments and plot, seems like is good. I'll give it a chance smile.

Seems like Melo Holic is hurtful enough to satisfy me XD. Also, I'll pick up Otaku no Musume-san calmer cuz manga is always longer than webtoons. And actually I mentioned Kanojo no Namida ga Yuki da Toshitara in my post, one of my favorites btw.

There's no problem if someone dies, but only after they give in, so if you remember another one by any chance, I like tragedies too smile

Don't worry. I'm a frequent customer of tragedies XD. I've read Rec and Deep Love series completely and Sekai ( of course is ongoing). Solanin is in my Wish List. Thanks!

I think Flowers of Evil is a good match. The story might come on as disturbing at first but if you really find time to read it, I'm sure that will be to your liking. Oh and Annarasumanara is not a manga but a webtoon. But i think it's being turn into a manhwa. Anyway it's pretty good. I actually forgot if the ending is too bitter but i still rec. you go read it

Emma - Victorian romance between people of two different social classes
Magic - definitely meets the star-crossed lovers reuniting after much turmoil thing, this one with a sci-fi backdrop
Oyasumi Punpun - still ongoing, but nearing its end and the couple in the beginning of the story just reunited in the most recent volume.

Boys on the run
There's a live action movie base on this manga. Here's the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJIQLRbB5MM , it gives you a basic idea about the manga.

3 Years - it's only 3 chapters though, but it fits your request.

By the way, what does ''Star-Crossed Lovers'' mean? sorry if my question seems dumb dead

I think Koizora might fit.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
They get into a relationship, they go through many hardships (but they do not break up due to that), they break up and he gets into a realationship with her friend - THEY BROKE UP, BECAUSE HE FOUND OUT THAT HE HAD CANCER! He'll die for sure (don't know yet, since all the chapters haven't been scanlated), so it's a "might fit".

C-Blossom - Case 729

Beautiful Fascination Is Better Than Love - I haven't read this yet, but from what I know of it, it fits your request.
