Anybody have any suggestions on characters that were of british birth, but live or work in Japan.

I'm not looking for manga that is based in Britain like Hellsing & Emma.

Ana Coppola of Ichigo Mashimaro is a good example.

Any other ideas?

This is exactly what he didn't want. laugh

Anyway I think Negi in Mahou Sensei Negima! is British, since I remember that he teaches English.

You've probably read this anyway (since it's meant to be a 'masterpiece') but L from Death Note was brought up in England... I think... O.o"

No less ridiculous then in most of american movies, tv series, read comics or books? ALL foreign characters apparently can speak really good english (although with a specific accent) when they are supposed to be speaking in their country's native language. (Russians instead of Russian speak English with Russian accent, French speak English with French accent, in comics they speak english (only in italics or parentasis). And coming right off the plane they immediately learn very good english (with british accent to boot! LOL)

I think its common to each country's own literature/movies - in Japan when Americans depicted -they immediately know Japanese but speak with american accent. (i don't speak japanese but I kind of recognize it already when saiyuu's try to imitate american accent, and frankly speaking I prefer that to seiyuu's attempting to speak English and ending up with such bad Engrish that I actually need to read subtitles to understand what they are saying and it kind of hurts my ears)

Actually, in comics and some books they give you a footnote when the foreign characters talk to tell you that it's "translated from "blahblahblah" language". And in movies, TV series, and some books, some foreign characters actually are talking in their native language, but it's just like the case with the comics where even though they speak english, it's supposed to be "known" that they're speaking in their native language, and the accent shows where the foreign character is from. It's usually the American characters that suddenly learn or have always known the foreign language. Of course, the writers could just learn the language and just have them translate it with subtitles on the bottom, but they probably don't have enough time to learn it or they're just too lazy to do that.

And to contribute to the topic, Grace Lin from Eiken is British.

maybe they're not, it'd be hard to convey an really thick foreign accent/ people pronouncing words wrong in written japanese without it just getting annoying after a few chapters, and even harder for it to come across after translating back into English..
And it's not that strange to speak more than one language well. If they were able to read Japanese perfectly it'd be more unlikely...

Even odder in Sword of the Stranger, all the native Chinese characters speak really bad chinese (so bad that anyone who doesn't speak chinese could tell), and all the foreigners, even one who's supposedly a westerner, speak good chinese smile I could never work out if it's meant to be offensive or funny. great film though.
(/end off topic..)

Spoiler (highlight to view)
King Arthur
is from Britain. They just told more stories about him in Wales because that's where everyone ran off to every time a different bunch of people invaded on the east coast. biggrin

There seem to be more in Samurai shows, probably because the animators/manga artists got bored of drawing hakama..
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto had an entertainingly corrupt bunch of characters from Imperial England I seem to remember.. laugh and Samurai Champloo had a gay Dutch guy who'd travelled to Japan to watch cross-dressers at the theatre. Peacemaker had a blonde western ninja woman, but I don't know if she was in the manga..

Well we're talking about a probably non historical figure, so there is not really point in arguing about that since there are too many theories about him. bigrazz

Kagen no Tsuki's main male love interest is British. It's a great series.
