So recently I've been enjoying some horror manga, so I thought that I'd look for some help since this is a new genre I'm going into. ^^ Basically I'm looking for a specific sort of horror. I'm looking for a deep, thoughtful story that manages to be horror without a lot of outright Gore, and I'd like it to be complete, since if I love it, I don't want to be praying for more, like the situation im in with Dokuhime.

My favorite horror so far is Dokuhime, so something like that is perfect. I recently read Ibitsu, which I enjoyed although there was a bit much violence. I loved Deadman Wonderland(which I would think of as some sort of horror)'s story and characters, but there was a lot of gore. What I really am looking for is the sort of manga that can be frightening without being specific. Anyway, if there are any horrors you've read that made you think of that, please don't be afraid to suggest it. I know it's sort of vague, but I can't think of a better way to describe it at the moment. xD

you would love pet shop of horrors, it is quite inventive without being overboard. should also try hakushaku cain series and all the mangaka's other works, they are quite gothic. you know, the best way to get horror without gore is finding shoujo/ josei horror.

Well, I usually dont read a lot of shoujo but there are something caught my eye

Delivery its not dark but just glimpse of abusive parent, divorced marriage, prostitute, suicide..etc . It only 6 chapter so give a shot.

1 litre no Namida very touching manga but there are no raw or any scanlator pick up, so watch 1 litre of tear jdrama

Hikari to Tomo ni... just simple premise, a mother trying to raise her autism son

well, I have to disagree with Yuki Kaori. She is my favorite author, but her works ARE gore.

I would suggest goth, there were some gore panels, but not that much, it was more psychological that horror too.

and the tarot cafe

Thanks very much for the suggestions, they look great. Thanks for the point you made, whitespade, I didn't think of that, but I should definitely look into josei horrors. ^^

I'm not too familiar with your examples but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Wind Grass Child from OKAZAKI Mari's Yawarakai Kara
My favourite spine-chilling story. There's no physical horror but the atmosphere makes it eerie in a beautiful way. The main character resembles Oscar Wilde's "Salome", yet the storytelling is soaked with distinctively Japanese imagery.
Don't skip the poem from the opening pages; it really sets the mood.

Dahlia the Vampire by KAKINOUCHI Narumi
I can't seem to put it into words but each episode in this story left me with a sad, almost wistful feeling of what might have been. Not fully tragic, so you don't feel too sympathetic, but you can't stay unmoved, either. Too bad the English version has been dropped.

KASAI Minoru's Rokuyoku
This fable left me with a bitter aftertaste which is welcome for this kind of sinister tale. No gore here, only a piece of simple and effective narration with a psychological note.

Dawn - Tsumetai Te by UEDA Shinsyu
I'm not sure if this one fits because the scary parts are still physical. I liked it quite a bit though, for the mangaka develops the characters nicely and scratches the psychological troubles of her setting.

The following ones are more mystery than horror but you might like them:

KAMINAGA Manabu's Conductor illustrated by Nokiya and Shinrei Tantei Yakumo drawn by ODA Suzuka
Pretty well-known series about mysterious crime cases. The first one causes the more "ordinary" kind of psychologically driven uneasiness, whereas the latter intersperses supernatural elements to add to the usual suspense.

Boogiepop wa Warawanai by KADONO Kouhei/ OGATA Kouji
Two Urban legends haunt a certain high school. Atmospheric net of skilfully unfolded storylines.

You could also take a look at the following thread if you're open to other non-physical horror:

Paranoid, claustrophobic horror (Denpa)

I would definitely second Pet Shop of Horrors though there is definitely some gore-ish parts in there, so be warned! It's a great psychological-esque horror, though, and I really enjoyed it.

Also, as much as I love Parasyte, I would just like to point out that it's really gory, haha. Much moreso than Deadman Wonderland ever was, I think. It's a fantastic manga, but if you can't handle gore, I think you might want to give this one a pass.

Some horror I remember enjoying...
Doll Star - Kotodama Tsukai Ihon
Motto, Ikitai... (there is some body horror here, which you can consider gore, but it's more psychological than not)
Omae ga Sekai o Kowashitai nara
School Ningyo
Skyhigh (and all its sequels)

Also, have you ever tried any of the Higurashi series (i.e. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onikakushihen)? It's a pretty good psychological horror series, in my opinion, though there is definitely some blood/gore here and there, so be warned about that.

You could also try Another which is a pretty straightforward rendition of psychological horror. It has incredibly beautiful art, but I have mixed feelings about the story as a whole. (Mainly that it didn't affect me at all, but your mileage may vary, ha.)
