Too Long

This manga would have been great if it was only 50 chapters, but it drags on too long. The relationships never really change, so the jokes get stale after awhile. Although the circumstances of the jokes change, the basis of the jokes (the unexpressed love and awkwardness of the characters) never changes.

In terms of content, this manga has a lot of references to other series, but they're presentation is not that creative. The intermittent drama was good when it actually changed the relationships (like the dance between Harima and Sawachika), but most of it didn't and was just pointless space fillers.

I will go with @mewarmo990 on this one.The first two seasons of the anime and full metal panic fumoffu are my best comedy series(I have even rated them with a 10).
The manga is a big NO.Surprisingly for the anime to be better than the manga?Indeed it's one of the few occasions.I am so disappointed that i would rather not have read the manga in the first place.
Ok,here is where it fails:
-Artwork is bad.I didn't expect that in the first place.Combine this with the nonexistent cleaning on most chapters and you will have a hard time reading it.
-The most important part is unfortunately what happened with the plot.
1)After the second season of the anime finished, the manga continued with volumes of filers which of course didn't promote the plot.Wa wait, filers in a manga?Yes,unfortunately that's the best term i can come up with or if you prefer useless, meaningless, pointless chapters.
2)Unfortunately 1) wasn't the worst part that could happen with the story. The ending was a train wreck and it's one of the worst endings i have ever seen.I am not talking about 2 chapters that somebody mentioned before. The ending can be sum up on the last 2 volumes, since school rumble consists of so many characters. Was it a red light from the editors due to falling popularity, was it the inability of the mangaka to put a proper ending, was it his grudge towards society?I don't know. But in either of those cases when somebody writes a series which for the first half is great, then it's a bunch of fillers and then we get a shitty ending i can say his motives are made of pure venality.

The worst part a writer can do to his story is to not make a closure for his characters.I mean if the story didn' have the characters then there would be no story in the first place. In school rumble in half the occasions he didn't even mentioned what happened and in the other occasions he forcefully removed them in a BAD BAD WAY.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
-Why exactly did Shou break up with Asou senpai
-The whole Madoka-Kidou infidelity thing (which also leaves a sour taste)
-The rejection of Yakumo who the author later completely forgot. For God's sake she is a main character!
And 100 many more occasions which i clearly don't remember anymore.

I advise those who have seen the anime not to read the manga. If i could delete the memories of the manga from my mind i would gladly do so.I won't also read any story from the same author again, not only because he killed one of my best anime series, but also for fear of he might do the same with his next manga concerning the ending and the plot development on the ending chapters.
Hope i helped with the review...

Look, I like my manga long, but this was just too ambitious.

School Rumble has a lot going for it. A potentially deep and engrossing storyline, humorous setting, interesting and varied cast, and it managed to last a surprising 22 volumes, so it has to be pure awesome, right? Not so.

To its credit, School Rumble has some of the most interesting characters I've ever read, and the Tenma/Harima premise hooked me from the start. But after 10 volumes or so, the constantly recycled plot devices, jokes, and "better luck next time" moments became merely irritating thanks to the utter lack of plot development.

Furthermore, the cast of SR is so unmanageably large that it's hard not to imagine readers completely forgetting about many of the secondary characters. I have nothing against a lot of characters, but this series juggled them poorly, introducing yet more forgettable characters even when there were still too many unresolved subplots to tie up.

Last of all, the random humor and unexpected (but sloooow) plot twists definitely drove this series' appeal for a while, but I found it unnecessary and frankly unwise to keep it up even when the plot was finally winding down. Because of the frequent "twists", some promising relationships are suddenly sidelined, and the involved characters are forced into being supportive friends without any rationale whatsoever.

Case in point: Yakumo, one of the most endearing characters in the series with a serious storyline to boot, finally works up the resolve to admit her admiration and love for Harima, and goes unheard because Harima's personality does not allow him to deviate from his feelings for Tenma. But see, that's not what I have a problem with - it's just that after all that character development, she is never really mentioned again. The timeskip ending is no excuse; time healed her wounds? Horses***. No explanation, no conclusion written for Yakumo. Just a loose end for a major character. Unacceptable.

Finally, art is above average at best, with some very nicely done panels for important chapters, but all too often it is seemingly rushed and barely serviceable at times.

Honestly, 30% of the series just felt like the author was attempting to drag out the series as long as possible to maintain sales. That said, I can understand why the anime was so popular, since it HAD to end at some point.

Good...but could have been better

Each character was amazingly detailed without falling into the typical stereotypes. While they could be categorized as such, the characters are funnier and more amusing because of their unique idiosyncrasies.

However, the plot dovetails into insanity and uselessness trying unsuccessfully to maintain its original humor. It really does drag on for a long time. Unless gag humor is your cup of tea, this becomes annoying since their is no progression and the story takes a detour delaying a resolution.

The artwork is average. Detailed without too much going on in some chapters. However in some others, lack of effort can clearly be seen, but that doesn't happen too often. Though this could be attributed to poor quality scans, which seem to be the case.

Could have been one of the best...if the author spent more time on the ending than the filler in between.

Annoying misunderstanding and then misunderstanding, endless misunderstanding, unsolve misunderstanding, misunderstand feelings.

Don't look at me that way, I love the characters and all (specially Eri, Hegi and Yakumo), but the manga is a no no.

It's annoying I didn't bother reading through the volumes. Even the special release didn't did the justice I want. I just hate manga that when things goes soo cool, it's already the end.

Suzuka is an exeption (it has hard development like having a

and the end is still too far), but this manga definitely is a no no.

The end just killed it for me

The series started out fantastic, with misunderstandings, mishaps, misguidance and...more misunderstanding. Gradually, more characters like my favorites, Eri and Yakumo were introduced and I continued to read the series for Eri's, Yakumo's and Harima's relationship(s).
I like lenghty reads but in this case I personally felt it too long. More than half the chapters have zero progress and the plot stagnates way too often. The misunderstandings began to frustrate me. The cast is composed of so many characters, I forgot the names of half of them and most of the minor classmates I felt served no purpose.
I ploughed on anyway and then came some much wanted plot development in the closing volumes. I was really happy at the way the whole thing was moving. Some really heartwarming moments were thrown in and I loved those, even if some were interuppted by minor issues. The YxHxE was stretched to another level, that was what I disapproved of. But had the mangaka ended the series at Ch-281 and continued with SRZ fromt this point on, I'd have been more than happy. But the closing chapters, oh god, years of writing through volumes and volumes of manga, KJ-san killed the whole series just with two chapters.
The end was too loosely tied up, half the plotlines were just left hanging and had their not been a sequel, I know that KJ would've been lynched. The time-skip in itself was a confusing change of pace. Even if 5-6 years had passed since the last time they'd met, their character remains as incorrigible as ever with everyone pining over their respective 'love's (stands true for Harima atleast). It was lame to say the least and I was very disappointed. And where did they get their school uniforms anywayconfused
All in all I was very saddened by how a good series like SR can be degraded by just two chapters. The ending was too rushed and confused for it to be coherent. It's because of that I can't bring myself to give it a better rating. Had it ended at Ch-281, I'd have still given it an 8.5 but it didn't so it dropped down by two whole points.

At first it was all comedy but then there came a little more "serious" romance into the picture. Some may say that this is a bad thing but i like it better this way biggrin
And Haruma X Eri all the way biggrin
