at first i didnt want to read this because of all the negative comments n im not going to lie a lot of it is true. its cliche the not so original childhood back story and it s really nothing you havent seen before but despite all that its a good read to the point i cant wait for the next chapter. it has its funny moments n the character if u get into it are pretty likable there all very cute in there own way that u cant help but love them n the story is a kinda sweethearted and even though u kinda know what gonna happen it just sucks you in n you just wanna read it anyways ..... im giving it a 10 because it been a very long time since i read a manga with all these cliches n still want to read more...

n just saying i dont really comment on a manga unless it was a really enjoyable read or a really bad one

Ingredients for Nisekoi:

1 cup of "Every cliche drawn on any romance/harem manga"
2 cups of mediocre fanservice
3 cups stupid childhood backstory
1/20th teaspoons of Originality

Mix, then scatter for the swarming fanboys

Short review. All the "rival" characters that have appeared after Onodera are just boring and unlikeable. The whole lock-and-key-past is so undescribably stupid that whenever its brought up in the manga I feel like I'd be better of using my time to finger saggy grannies (not to mention, its just a lazy rehash of the childhood setup in Love Hina). Female protagonist's blonde hair is genetically impossible and I'm pretty sure her bunny ears are a school dress code violation

The one redeeming feature of this manga is the male protagonists best friend. A funny lad he is. But again, like everything else, he's just another "something that I've seen before"

Well, i know a lot of us have been disappointing with the Harem tag (including me) But I realised that even though it does put me off a lot, i cna still read it. The story is headed somewhere for sure, and it Wont have a harem ending. Atleast it doesnt look like that from the recent chapters. I currently read chapter 46, and am eagerly waiting for more development in the plot. Its a good shonen romance, please give it a try.

I loved the oneshot and the first chapter. My hopes were so high!

And then I saw the harem tag. sad I take back all the good things I said about this manga. I guess Komi Naoshi just gave up and decided he had to pander to the lowest common denominator to keep this series from getting cancelled, and that's just sad. (He should seriously try to pitch his stuff to a different magazine, like Shonen Sunday or something.) Here's hoping that he goes back to doing oneshots soon!

So, I picked up Nisekoi mainly because Komi Naoshi is the mangaka, and his previous works (i.e. Double Arts, Personant, Williams, etc.) have been clever and interesting, with a new, inventive spin on old premises. And, to some degree, the same can be said of Nisekoi.

This manga is basically a bunch of harem tropes and such done completely straight and occasionally lampshaded. The only thing that really differs is that the male protagonist is actually, well, likable. And despite all the cliche moments in which he accidentally does something questionable (such as peeping or whatever), he does ultimately come off as well-meaning and not-an-asshole. Whoo!

However, I would not necessarily recommend this manga, especially to those looking for something more serious. It has nice art and decent characters, sure, but at its roots, it's exactly what it appears to be: a silly, romantic, harem comedy.

edit: OK, now 139 chapters in, and it's still the same old, same old. As others have said, there's really no plot (or romance) progression. More girls just keep getting added, which is frustrating (especially because I just want Raku and Onodera to GET TOGETHER ALREADY since they both still like each other, and have since chapter one). But Raku continues to be an overall nice guy, and it's actually pretty amazing that a harem romance comedy can be this inoffensive in its treatment of the female characters. Doesn't really excuse the lack of development, though, but at least that's an upside.

I postponed reading this and added to my 'to read' list because:
a) The premise of a romance involving yakuza or gangsters of any sort just totally has me on the hook
b) The mangaka is the same author of Double Arts(which I still mourn over for getting axed. Why, Japan? Whyyy!?)

...then I finally jumped onto reading this, only, I noticed the harem tag and almost got whiplash from the double-take I did because I'm sure that wasn't there when I added it to the list. Dammit. I thought I was going to be able to enjoy another comedic shounen manga with some good romance where there's a lot of tension between the leads. Got my hopes up for nothing...well maybe a bit something since I really liked the oneshot which showed so so so much promise.

It's hard to get any good romances with the leads in contention with each other and I'm such a sucker for arranged marriages/forced to live together/etc. where the characters learn to love each other despite thinking they could never grow to like the other person. Falling under the demographic for shounen made it all the better because we don't get anything too gooey, just scenes that are just right or those that make you want something more but end up getting satisfied by how things go anyway.

And then there's the ridiculous addition of gangsters/yakuza/delinquents, I seriously had heart-eyes for this manga. Luuuurve the premise. LOVE!!! (I blame Gokusen, GTO, all the other epic mangas with badass people)

Then I read it. It has its good points...it's just, my palm has really gotten to know my face lately while reading this. Why the harem? Why? Is it not 'shounen' enough(I know, I know, shounen isn't a genre, yaddayadda) that it has to have the addition of female 'rivals'. There was just the two of them in the oneshot.

We go to the main series and we start off with a love-triangle(insert twitchy eye but at least Onodera was bearable. Not really. Honestly, I'm an Onodera hater. Sue me) then we get some more girls with pages and pages aaaand pages of fanservice. We get it, they're cute/hot.

If only we had the same amount of male 'rivals' then maybe, I'd be okay with the harem. We rarely get any harem with reverse-harem in the same manga(speaking of which, if anyone can point me to any with a harem aaand a reverse-harem, I'd be much obliged).

I Loved the pair with their hilarious nicknames for each other: "Shitty Darling" and whatnot. Love. I'm okay with *some* love rivals if it's helpful to the plot. That ain't really happening here. Whatever, Chitoge FTW!

But I still think it's worth reading for the comedy if not for female lead(referring to the one mentioned in the summary)...oh, and the guy. I don't usually go for the childhood friend in a harem but I just loved Chitoge because she wasn't some annoying obsessed wimpy girl always chasing after the guy while the guy ogled others.(The oneshot outshines the rest of the chapters really with the tsundere level just right. In the main series, it was a bit off)

Cliches, cliches everywhere. It is not unforgivable, though, if you see it from a different point of view. The art and drawing style is good, and as for the story: people, this series is not meant as a serious romance/shounen, so if you're reading it as one, you're going to have a bad time. This is a "slice of life, comedic romance", and so far I've enjoyed the gag and comedic elements, and even with the cliches, every once in a while it gets really cute and I was like "awww".

Now for the specific good point: this is the one of the few romance (albeit a comedic one) series where the "childhood friends faction" actually still stand a chance against the "new challenger". Harem series usually feature an oblivious male lead with many women swarming over him, and the male usually have little to none preferences over any one of the girl - this series violates the law to an extent it's interesting to see how far the author is going to develop this situation.

So while it's not perfect, it really is worth reading...if you're reading it as a comedy/romance, of course.

The oneshot and the beginning of the series held much potential, the yakuza x mafia interaction was so promising that we expected so much

yet, as the series going, it turned into a cliche school-themed romance manga. The underworld theme went to the toilet and it's just cliche after cliche spawning every chapter

but the final blow is the latest chapter (24)

the class did a lottery to create pairs for kimodameshi, a boy and a girl
there are 6 main characters, somehow they paired with each other, all 6, within themselves
btw, the lottery wasn't manipulated in any way
rather than inserting some sick probability here, wasn't it better just to add some random classmates to the pairing? i think the author got hit with a hammer some times ago, that he couldn't think logically anymore

Even though it is a little cliche, it's still enjoyable. Reading this doesn't hurt! Despite the harsh judgement I still like it and think it deserves a better output than the other reviews. I honestly LOVE it and wait every week for the next chapter smile
