Look here. If you still have some confusion left (which is very possible...) you can ask and be more specific about what is still not clear.
But anyway, that should explain the "main genres".

Being a girl, I'm definitely leaning towards the shoujo side. But I'd prefer something with a nice balance of both shoujo and shounen (sorry if I don't make sense, I'm new to this whole animanga mania, so I might sound very weird... my last fandom was Harry Potter for like 5 years).

Romance's sweet, but overused romantic ruse repulses me. =/ Comedy's a must... unless the series got an excellent plot to compensate the lack of comical scenes. Too much action-packed scenes bore me to tears too.

Not a fan of gender bender, shoujo/shounen-ai though, that's for sure! And whatever hentai/ecchi squeaks me out... although I should be fine with some gore/violence (e.g. Hellsing especially the last few volumes....).

Hi,
I agree with alot of what TofuQueen said - I don't care much for reading or watching depressing stuff because there's enough in real life.
I probably end up reading alot of shoujo and romance, especially ones with fantasy or historical. But there's at least a little bit of something in other genres that I like too.
I also avoid genres like yaoi and yuri, lolicon and shotacon, hentai and ecchi. Generally shonen-ai doesn't interest me, but I do have Earthian, or would be open to reading something with a good plot and good story-telling. Oh, sports don't particularly interest me either, in manga or real life roll

You could classify me as the stereotypical guy

I read mostly shounen and some Seinen works with comedy, sports, adventure, school life and/or action.

However, i also like a romantic backdrop in the story (or a pure romance manga, but still has to be a shounen or Seinen).

My fav works so far have been

GTO, One Piece, and School Rumble

my favorites are mostly Shounen and a combo of dramedy (drama + comedy, duh) and action/mystery series, but I also've found a number of interesting Shoujo series and even a few with ecchi themes that I've grown quite attached to, but for the most part I find myself gravitating towards Shounen and just a select few of Shoujo series (since I can't stand some of the 'fluffier' girls manga). bigrazz

Most notably would be... Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Cat, Bleach, Death Note, Fruits Basket, Negima, Shaman King, Tsubasa Chronicle, Cardcaptor Sakura (an old fav), Chrono Crusade, Spiral, DNAngel, Vampire Knight, Loveless, Naruto, and the .hack series.

I'm also a liking for Juvenile Orion, +Anima, Kamichama Karin, Magical x Miracle, and Dazzle; as well as the OELs My Cat Loki, Dramacon, and Off*Beat. smile

Hmm I think seinen is my favorite; I like darker manga rather than light hearted ones. But, I won't know till I read the manga =/

Oh, I never answered the thread question. Um, romance, particulary yaoi and shonen ai, comedy, action... I'm not really picky. Oh, but I don't read that much shojo that isn't boyxboy, the girls annoy me.

I generally prefer some combination of drama, seinen, josei and/or romance. Comedy is never a bad thing either, although I am not a fan of most of your action based stuff.

Hi again,
I got started on Earthian because I had gotten the anime off of e-bay without knowing it was shounen-ai (because I thought the angel-ey pics were neat). It threw me for a little loop at first (because I wasn't too deep into manga/anime at that point) but I liked the plot idea anyway and it wasn't too graphic. I also realized that the four episodes of the anime were only a small fraction of the manga series. I've purchased vol. 1 so far. I was also impressed with the quality of the GN itself. I really like the cover quality.
So anyway - am I getting long-winded? - Loveless is by the author of Earthian? I've seen Loveless in the bookstore and the covers are intriguing, but I haven't purchased it yet. What's it like?
