I've been an avid manga reader for a couple years now and I read almost anything except yaoi/yuri and hentai. Well last week I went to a con and decided to sit in on a yaoi panel and thought maybe i should try this so what I'm asking is for some yaoi suggestions.
Please nothing too intense this is my first time. Be gentle senpai....

There's one really good mangaka who writes yaoi, [url=http://www.mangaupdates.com/authors.html?id=6374], her stories are drawn very well and the storylines are more realistic than most yaoi.

Then you should begin with shounen-ai instead of yaoi. Once read The Visitor, and I thought it wasn't that bad. There are lots of authors that manage mild situations inside female's demographics, but now I can only recall Odagiri Hotaru and Sugiura Shiho.

I always though that Sono Yubi Dake ga Shitte Iru was a good introduction. It's not all about bed action and has many typical BL troops. But it may be a bit hard to get it now (i wouldn't know, it's long since I've read it).
But aside from that I totally recommend Tsumasaki ni Kourozu. It's shounen-ai and definitely one of those works that's "something different" in the genre itself as well (or at least it was totally refreshing for me).

Here are a few titles with the training wheels on:
Totally Captivated - I don't think there's anyone who doesn't like this. It's funny and not too explicit.
Gravitation - The art isn't so great in the beginning, but it gets better. The anime is also good.
Hachimitsu Darling - a young man finds a new purpose in his life when he is given a job and a home with a veterinarian. Pretty tame until the end.
Wild Rock - Prehistoric. Hunky main character falls for feminine uke. Awesome.
Koi Cha no Osahou (Tea for Two) by SAKURAGI Yaya
SOS: New Yaoi Fangirl - This thread is for a similar request. Though there are some that I wouldn't recommend to a new fan, there are a lot of good suggestions here.
Also please check out my tumblr blogs -
Yaoi Kisses is based on a presentation I did. The Required Reading and Mangaka sections are the titles I think every yaoi fan needs to know.
Eat. Sleep. Yaoi. - Not as structured as my other blog, you may find it useful to get an idea of different art styles. Warning - both are NSFW
When (if) you find out what you like, come over to the Yaoi forum (where this thread is likely to end up) and ask for more like it.

Seven Days - I think this would suit you. Kind of gentle, nothing rushed and of course no bed scenes. And it's short. I see it as perfect for getting used to the thought of two males being together.
And then there's others:
Acid Town
Haikei, Niisan-sama
Hana wa Saku ka
Sekaiichi Hatsukoi - Maybe.. Or maybe not. Up to you.
I second YONEDA Kou, but for sure DO NOT start with Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai. Although I really like it, it's definitely a bad starting point. And when I think about it..

As someone else has already said, start with shounen-ai! There's usually a lot more focus on plot without any graphic sex. (I actually jumped right into yaoi when I first started, and while it wasn't bad, per se, I wish I had eased into it instead now, haha.)
Anyway, A Night of a Thousand Dreams is something I pretty much recommend to everyone. It's one of those really, really good BLs that I would actually ask everyone to read, regardless of whether they like BLs or not. The characters all have a whole lot of depth and the character development is some of the best I've seen, full stop.
For more romance-oriented ones... Endou-kun no Kansatsu Nikki gave me really warm and fuzzy feelings while I read it. (Actually, anything I read by Hayakawa Nojiko gives me that feeling, so I would recommend looking into that.) Natsume Isaku is also pretty good at writing sweet, lovable romance. In particular, I recommend Ameiro Paradox.
I also have a huge love for anything Kunieda Saika writes, particularly Mirai no Kioku (which is what officially converted me). I don't know if I would recommend her to a newcomer, though. She doesn't write explicit/graphic sex, but there is definitely sex involved, and not just cutaway scenes either.

Everything by YONEDA Kou, especially Doushitemo Furetakunai.

i avoid yaoi like the plague but theres one exception; end of youth..its the only yaoi manga i ever liked
its so poignant, realistic and intense...not to mention it barely had any sex in it(i think it was only 1 scene?)

Why don't you start with shounen-ai? Or yaoi with only one or two pages of sex?

Then go to cute yaoi mangas:

Then more realistic yaoi, some tragedy maybe:

I agree, so for starters, these are the completed ones the picky me really enjoyed reading:
Shounen Ai:
* Slow Starter (ICHIKAWA Kei)
* Bokura ni Matsuwaru Et Cetera.
* Cello Mellow
* Running on Empty - If you don't mind Manhwa.
* Negative-kun to Positive-kun
* Me o Tojite 3-Byou - This one is tagged as Yaoi, but it's among my all-time fav's. ^^

Dear Green: Hitomi no Ounowa is good to start with I think.
(The manga is better than the description suggests..try it. O_O)
I also second the works of Yoneda Kou *_* Especially Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai and its prequels.
EDIT: And i absolutely second A night of a thousand dreams!!
