From Tinte:
Suh Hyun-bin grew up under the cruel hand of street gangsters, but after her little brother dies, Hyun-bin runs away and is taken in by a rich family to be trained to become a bodyguard. However, she must hide that she is female, and pose as a man. And so, for eight years, she grows up as a cold, male, bodyguard. It looks like she'll be this way forever--until a fateful encounter with Lee Yun-ha shakes her very foundations, and leaves her conflicting with herself, as her feelings of love clash against her feelings of duty.

The best manhwa.. So close to my heart

I loved this manhwa. This is just the best. Its perfectly portrays love, pain, emotions, difficulty and happiness. It teaches the value of even the tiniest happiness. I read this in April and now I am downloading and re-reading it again. I am very sad that some people give very bad reviews about this manhwa because it doesn't deserve it. It is an epic love story. I understood the meaning of true love from this. I respect it a lot. I have a corner of my heart reserved for this manhwa. Love it. Anyways, I wanted love in the mask 2 where spring and bi rak oppa's son fall in love.

Another bites the dust

And thus ends another mass produced manhwa(if u can call it that) that Yu-Rang churned out. My best suggestion is that she will stop and think carefully of decent plots and characters before she acts on impulse and draws up another disaster. Yes, I said disaster. She has a habit of thinking up seemingly excellent plots but mucks them up until they are as murky as my mother's gumbo. Seeing as this is her 60+ manhwa I would expect some massive drawing change. I'm not saying her style is bad because I respect every mangaka's artistic style but when the style totally impedes one to draw up emotions in the readers and instead makes one reach the point of tearing off hairs or guffawing, you know lines have been drawn. Having said that, this, like ALL her works, suffers from the "everyone looks the same except hair" syndrome. Even when angst moments occur, the badly drawn facial expressions (same barbie doll eyes) just can't make me empathize these characters.

Some manhwa have terrible drawings but make up for good plots but this also have fatal flaws. Like many people that commented before me, disasters and disasters come consecutively after the other like a bad soap opera and all Hyun-bin goes is go"hyung hyung hyung". Shojo is a sensitive genre because I understand teen's romanticized notion of love, bf, etc but I have to wonder what is to be gained from reading works where these teens don't approach sensible adults for help, scheme scheme scheme, beat each other up to settle matters, and liking characters just because they are, I quote from many fans, "he is just so HOT!!!!!!!"

Tangent time

This manhwa is absolute nonsense to the point that it's a parody. The storyline at the beginning was really good and had a lot of potential, but unfortunately, as it progressed, it got worse until it reached rock bottom. It was going at a rate at which it got so silly that it was funny, and made my want to gag most of the time as well as shout out "Really?! Are you effing serious?! The manwhaga uses the character's tragic pasts as a tool to gain the readers sympathy, but it could only go so far as to where a line was drawn. Sadly, she stepped over that line and punched the reader in the face with utter stupidity and no explanation for the characters senseless actions other than the said tragic past.

I got the feeling that the manhwaga was also in her own little fantasy world where senseless fighting could resolve everything as well as create disturbing romances and where there were no such thing as teachers or classes even though they were at so called school. In addition, this manhwa considers guys kissing on the lips and giving each other promise rings as an act of brotherly love as normal... I mean for gods sake woman, could you be any more silly?

In addition, I don't understand how the girl could have lost so easily to a guy who has had no training, after she herself has been training for most of her life as a professional bodyguard. I understand the whole men being stronger than women thing (unfortunately), but there are ways to go around it with proper training, hence she has been able to beat up so many of her male adversaries.. until now, and it had to be a skinny lil pretty boy. In addition, she's a sadist who loves to be beaten up by the guy she likes because that's how it happened... Love at first bash up. I mean really? 0_0 "Oh my, he's beaten the living shit out of me, I think I'm in love, hyung, Hyung, HYUNG!!" Annoying.. painstakingly annoying that I regret not listening to my natural instinct that said not to go near it.

Honestly, I don't know how this stupid series could go on for 32 volumes... someone said character development? Please, these characters are as 2-dimensional as the pages they were drawn on. The only thing that gave them an ounce of life was their past which becomes completely over used to the point where sympathy turns into disappointment.

I completely agree with you, Mionime.

At first I actually did enjoy the manga. But at the part of the story where the main girl lost to the guy in their first fight, I was completely confused and thought to myself, "how the hell did she lose?", and thus, I quit reading it. She had YEARS of training and experience since she was trained to be a top bodyguard. I'm sure her training was strict, I mean she did train EVERY day after school since she was a child. And that guy... was at first just like any other weak fragile little rich prince boy until his parents died. Suddenly after one year, he became stronger than the girl who's had MANY years of top training and experience?

At that moment, this manwha became completely illogical to me.

Slow, Repetitive Buildup and Rushed Ending

My title basically sums it up. I will divide the plot into three parts: Act I, the Gang Life, and the End.

Act I, while only having a few cringe-worthy parts, was mostly enjoyable except that some parts were dragged out and the angst was repeated. It honestly seemed a little forced how Hyun-Bin is initially attracted to Yun-Ha but the develop of their relationship was decent after this. Soon, however, we see the main couple go through the same trials repeatedly for a while before real changes occur. I understand this was done to show how strong Hyun-Bin's love for Yun-Ha was but it became less enjoyable when I felt the author was beating me over the head with it.

Also, the gang system seemed a little convoluted and disappeared when no longer needed to move along the plot. I'm not trying to spoil it so basically, once this one key event occurs, it just seems that the intense threats and darkness from this part disappears. This occurs like twice in the buildup and then again in the Gang Life part. For example, these kids did some crazy things and then somehow, they'd revert back to fist fights; their threat level plummeted and I couldn't take it seriously when the main characters either won them over with their great personality or could just beat an entire group singlehandedly.

The Gang Life arch I actually enjoyed a lot because that was when it focused more on the development of Bi-Rak. This guy was my favorite character and the author actually did a really good job portraying his sense of longing and dedication. The plans of the gang boss confused me as I honestly had no idea what he was trying to accomplish but these were small details since the main point was to develop the relationship between characters. Anyway, this part managed to touch me and is what I think brought the quality of this manwha up.

Next, the End arch was just so rushed. I could not come up with a more relevant name because it seriously just ended after the Gang Life arch. The lengths Hyun-Bin went through to

hide her identity
went up in smoke rather quickly. Also, it never allowed us to see how
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Hyun-Bin and Yun-Ha reconciled
. They just did. It never seemed like Hyun-Bin
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
really got over her trauma
. She just did. It would've been nice to see more development in our main couple because the end felt like they were together just for the sake of it.

Last point, I'll go over characterization. Hyun-Bin's character was really interesting in the beginning; you really cheered her on. However, her inability to hide her feelings of love was just so overdone. It was done better in the Gang Life arch; a new conflict appears and I liked how she realized it and came to terms with it more quickly than in Act I. For Yun-Ha, he was a more dynamic character in Act I, but in the Gang Life and The End, he's seemed to finish developing and remained stagnant for the rest of the story. I wish the author focused on him and his anguish a little more; I mean, come on, this guy has been
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
waiting for years on end. You could've made him break down in tears because of the intense longing or something so we could have something to relate to. We seem him cry for like one or two pages but let us see the agonizing, long years that pass as he waits; waiting drains you and he never wavered but in an unrealistic, reader-will-totally-pass-it-over kind of way. It seemed like he was stuck on a one-track mind and that's ALL he is.
Yun-Ha starts to pale in comparison when Bi-Rak becomes more developed and we get to experience Bi-Rak's pain and longing with him. I will say Bi-Rak was my favorite character; he might've been too good than humanly possible but still a likeable person to read.

Best ending EVER!

The whole thing was very slow, but it was worth reading. I skipped a lot of the parts between the main character's sister/the girl she body guards and the main love interest. I also skipped a lot of the black haired girl who got raped parts. They weren't essential and it wasn't that interesting.

But anyway, the last few volumes were very much worth the wait. It was so sad, but then SOOO happy. lol, like almost too happy. Loved it. I can't stop smiling after that. So cute. =)

Mixed Feelings...

I found Love in the Mask while I was searching for good gender benders to read, and I absolutely loved the premise. The story kept me hooked until about chapter 80. At that point I started to dislike where the story was going so I dropped it (plus the male lead's undying devotion was getting on my nerves). When I saw that it had been completely scanlated, I decided to give the ending a shot. I read it from the beginning (skimming through a few parts), and forced myself to keep reading until the end.

I really didn't like the last 30 chapters or so. They were fine to read, but I felt as if the story I'd fallen in love with had disappeared. I would have been much more satisfied if the story had ended around the time when the main characters finished high school. It felt like I was reading the ending from a distance because, for some weird reason, I didn't have any emotional connection to the characters. I didn't absolutely hate the ending, but it wasn't done the way I was hoping for (which can be a good thing in some cases, the ending being a suprise and all, but I felt really let down by the whole setup).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Another thing that really bothers me is that the revelation of Hyun Bin's gender seemed very... anticlimactic. I love gender benders and always hope that the main character's true gender won't be revealed too early on, so I was glad that Hyun Bin's disguise lasted for a while. But then it kept dragging and dragging and, when it all came down to it, with the hypnosis and the forgetting and everything, the "big reveal" just wasn't satisfying at all. And am I the only one who didn't like the long-haired guy (I think his name was something Bi-Rak... it's been a while)? He was really annoying and I think the story would have been a lot better (and shorter) if he was completely taken out of it. I hated how his presence distracted from the main couple at the end.

The art (especially facial expressions) was never spectacular, but it really started to bother me about 2/3 of the way through. I think I wouldn't have minded the story's shortcomings quite as much if the art was better.

All of that said, I would be lying if I claimed that I hate this manhwa. I really liked the beginning, was disenchanted by the middle, and was pretty disappointed by the ending, but I'm still glad I read it. It's not the end of the world if you end up not liking it, so don't be afraid to give it a shot if it seems interesting to you.

Disappointing and Boring!

Seriously?!? I mean... the ending was soooo annoying!
This story was SO BEAUTIFUL at the beginning... and because I loved the main characters and the plot, I pushed myself to read till the end.
But what a disappointment... to think that such a great story ended up like like. =/ I mean, there is a point in the story where they drag the plot endlessly, the suddenly, at the last few volumes, we rush through the story so fast that I couldn't really keep track of the story anymore. I got bored and lost. The last chapter was plain stupid and confusing... I wish we could hear more about the kids in the last page, though.
Still, it's a story worth reading. I just wish the artist would have granted us a better ending since we were dragged through 134 chapters. =[

This plot was so confusing that I cannot even comprehend what is going on. At fist the plot was okay, then mediocre and last but not least it dropped off of the scale around chapter 75, as the plot flips so much it would make you vomit if it was a rollercoaster. Honestly, what was the author thinking while writing this? I would also like to add that the art is terrible and the women look like men, and vice versa. The main character leaves alot to be desired, as does every other character in this manwha. Also their expressions are like zombies. Their Crying faces = :I Their Happy faces= :I Their angry faces= :I Their shocked faces= :I . Honestly some scenes went like this:
:I - Oppa, I love you.
:I - I'm so sorry *cries?* I can't return your feelings.
:I - I hate you. I will KILL myself :I
Wrapping it up, it made my head hurt to follow along and I am certain that I lost brain cells trying to do so.
