I think I'm a bit more specific with my requests so I figured it's better to start a new thread.

What I'm looking for isn't just a strong and confident girl, but also a capable, self-assured heroine. I'm looking for a girl who knows when and how to put up a fight in her own way, and most importantly, isn't reduced to a mess of tears over stupid love triangles and dilemmas that could easily be solved if she could just think. I'd love to be able to read a manga where she's in a superior position over the male hero.

Examples that I've read and loved:

Hellsing : Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing
User Posted Image
The chairman of the Hellsing organization, and shares a relationship with the King of all vampires, Alucard, under her hand. This relationship is a wonderful play of tension, power struggle, understanding and respect... and perhaps something more.

Gokusen : Yankumi
User Posted Image
The granddaughter of a renowned Yakuza who enrolls in a school as a teacher. Her street fighting skills are legendary and she has the most notorious class in school under her control. Of all the people, she treats Shin, the student leader of the gang, as her confidante and equal. He falls in love with her along the way but makes absolutely no mention of it, and helps her out in any way he can. Where her fighting skills are far superior, he makes up for it by being more perceptive.

Aflame Inferno : Gehenna

Now this is what I'm talking about. One of the immortal emperors guarding the East, she is extremely sharp, knowledgeable and also sexy. biggrin She is one of the most powerful figures in this manga, very interesting in that the closer she becomes with the main character, the more awkward she is at portraying her feelings, which is a far cry compared to the beginning when she thought of him as no more than a useless bug. Aside from the fighting, there's also a bit of a harem going on, but it seems like the odds are greatly favoring her, which is a pleasant surprise considering her character type never sees the light of the day!

Iryuu - Team Medical Dragon : Dr. Katou
User Posted Image
One of the main characters of this famous medical manga, she is the driving force behind the team. She's somewhat cold (not stereotypically cold like you see in most shounen/harems) but just that the basis of her beliefs are grounded in facts, which makes her a very serious person in general. There are very little things that crack her barrier, but when it does, she's just a normal woman inside beneath the doctor exterior, as the other male hero finds out. (Note : This isn't romance, (yet?) but as she was a large inspiration for this thread, I thought it would be good to include her as well. biggrin)

Until Death Do Us Part : Haruka
User Posted Image
Here's a different type of heroine, but fits the requirements just as well. Haruka is twelve, is able to see the future, and also is able to predict that she'll be the wife of the main character (who's, like, twenty years older than her, but make no mistake, this is no pedophile manga, and you'll see why.) Despite her age, she doesn't think twice about jumping straight into danger if she sees that she can be of help to Mamoru, or for other people in general. In fact, her spontaneous trait can be considered her flaw, as she doesn't seem to be aware that she's constantly putting her life on the line, but perhaps she's used to it as she had been running away from her enemies for a long time.

I've also read:

Skip Beat : Good heroine, bad male lead. (I have a feeling people are gonna mention this. laugh )

To summarize

- A heroine capable of demonstrating leadership.
- A confident and capable woman.
- Is able to hold her own against her male love interest.
- Is in a superior/higher position than the male. biggrin

Otoyomegatari
There are only 4 chapters as of yet (chapter 5 should be out soon), but give it a try anyway. Awesome manga... and a strong but lovable female lead

OHhh I love your list *taking some suggestions to read after* Ok, since I hate stupid girls in mangas, let's see what I can remember for you.

Tokyo Crazy Paradise...this is surely a strong girl, I think she would be the strongest of all yakuza there ^^ only two men equal her there. This is more like a shounen with romance.

Kimi wa pet This is a woman who sure knows how to do what she wants, and she even takes a man as her pet...just for the sake of enjoying herself..besides she is really strong. She is older than the guy and in a better position at first since she takes care of him.

The Prince's Cactus there is a stupid prine following her, everyone loves him but she doesn't care a bit about it, she is the only one that stands to him and hits him when he is behaving in a stupid way. Hmm, she is the aunt-in law so she has a bit of authority over him.

Kuchiha from Amatsuki is really strong, and she stands above the other main characters in streng, being a special girl
Spoiler (highlight to view)
she holds a powerful deamon inside her
, she is a swordwoman..this has not much romance on it, just a bit, but it is a great story.

The main char from Half prince would be maybe your best choice here..she hates to be called weak and the fact that girls are treated as lame even in a game, so she decides to play as a male to become stronger than anyone and make a legend about how girls can fight, can defend themselves and can do the same things as men, she gets into the game as a male for the sake of not being treated kindly. This is a shounen with lots of comedy and also can be considered shoujo biggrin it has everything.

I have other options but they are not really romance-like, I mean powerful women like Yuuko from xxxHolic (I love her, she is the best, so powerful and smart)

I hope that helps biggrin

I thought of Mother Sarah, but......that's not romance...... T_T

I love your thread, though. *is also taking suggestions for the wish list*

Oh, and I second Otoyomegatari, Kimi wa Petto (if he's her pet, why is the 'you' as a male would say it? 0.o), and The Prince's Cactus. TCP and Skip Beat have strong girls, yes, but they're both idiots, which I don't think you're looking for. Tsukasa knows how to put up a fight, but when.....? Yeah right. If she can't kick the problem's face in, she's in trouble.

I should perhaps mention that she's one of my favorites. I just don't think she's the girl you're looking for.

The heroine of Eternal Sabbath? Not sure if she's in a "superior" position, though, since the guy isn't technically in any position at all (he's a genetically-engineered mutant).

Red River - you may find the lead female irritating at first but as you continue to read, you'll be able to see her evolution smile

Otoyomegatari, Basara, and Hot Blooded Woman are all good. Now, the heroine in Hot Blooded Woman is kind of dumb, but despite that, she's very mentally and physically strong. She kind of reminds me of a female Luffy (from One Piece) when I think about it. I got a kick out of it.

Cheeky Angel is pretty good. I've only read 5/20 (yes, 20) volumes so far though.

I swear know more, but my brain isn't working this morning, so that's it for now. Sorry dead

Does Spiral and Island really have romance in it or is the romance just hinted but never actually occurs?

I just realized that the type of heroine your looking for is quite difficult to find.
hmm... and I have to agree skip beat and Tokyo Crazy Paradise dont exactly fit the bill there, but thats just my opinion of course smile . So Ill put in what I think counts as capable female leads.
Dazzle ... perhaps not as much romance as you'd like but she certainly fits the capable category to me.
saver - main female is capable intelligent and just about fits every category you discribed. Has romance as well.
Nana - one of the nanas I think fits the summary you described. At least I think its been ages since I read it.
threads of time - she is the main female lead but I wouldnt say the main character. Still she is certainly capable and there is some romance in the story.

Miriam might qualify. It's actually rather funny, because although the heroine is eight years old and the hero is seventeen, she still manages to trick/manipulate him into doing what she thinks is fitting for the situation. She's also fairly kick-butt on her own - very quick-witted, physically agile, and has a lighthearted but resilient and determined attitude. I wouldn't say she's always in a position above the main male, though - more like they're equals, give or take a bit depending on the situation. But he does do things like protect her and stuff, so if you don't like that it's probably not for you. Still, she's my favorite female character ever. biggrin

Also: it's not Lolita, although the age difference might make it sound that way. She grows up before anything happens between them in that direction.
