I'm looking for a manga with an unusual genre/category combination - things that don't usually go together. One excellent example is Future Football, which is a sports manga but also a historical and a science fiction manga! Very unusual combination - football and time travel to the past. I don't know of any other manga that takes a historical perspective on a particular sport AND manages to be science fiction, as well. Pretty awesome. Tetsuwan Girl also struck me as unusual, being another sports/history combo.

I'm looking for combinations like that... Combinations that make you blink and take notice.

Some unusual combinations would be:

A shoujo manga that is also a fighting tournament manga (something that is more common in shounen).

A yaoi manga that is also a space opera.

A josei manga in the 'mecha' category.

A shounen manga that is also shounen ai.

A seinen manga that is a reverse harem (multiple hot guys to one girl).

A manga about pregnancy and war.

A manga about painting and science.

Weird/unique combinations like that, please! I'm open to any genre/category except hentai.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Yukikaze - apparently a female-oriented spin-off from a military science fiction novel and anime of the same name.
Kanojoiro no Kanojo - josei series where one of the central characters is involved in the free-fighting tournament.

The anime and manga don't really do it justice, but the original game of Togainu no Chi was really something unique. Where else do you see Battle Royale turned into a setup for raunchy gay sex?

Also on a game note (though from what little of it I've read, the manga is a much more faithful adaptation in this case), sweet pool takes yaoi and and turns it into a kind of terrifying body horror story.

Funny you should mention space opera yaoi. Wasn't someone trying to get a translation of Ao no Kiseki going?

wow.. i came across a manga few days ago that might fit... a little (just a gut feeling)
the description say something like this: a girl's father whom is a professional shogi player died in front of the board with a single piece on it (if i'm not mistaken). and now the girl is trying to be a professional shogi player and try to find her father murderer..... something like that.
i forget the title though... but i'm pretty sure it is still new

Ax: Alternative Manga has a huge number of categories - most of which aren't usually seen together.

If you're looking for non-cliche BL, then Litchi Hikari Club fits the bill nicely.

One of my favourite manga has historical + sports to its name; Steel Ball Run. If you haven't read this, you really should - it's very unique.
Another manga with this genre combo is Project X: Datsun Fairlady Z

Kami no Kodomo is rather unusual for a josei.

Tokyo Zombie sports an odd jumble of category tags.

A shounen-ai space opera I've always wanted to read; Jane.

Post-war society can't get any odder than in the world of Pure Trance.
You might want to check out some of Mizuno Junko's other manga as well. They haven't been scanlated, but some are licensed.

As for BL + shounen; there's Tsumikabatsu which runs in Jump SQ (weird!) and Gamerz Heaven!

Xenosaga Episode 1 is apparently josei + mecha.

Painting Warriors might be pretty unique. (A painter in a war?)
Paradox Blue also has an interesting genre / category combination.

1/2 Prince, The Legend of Sun Knight, Kuroshitsuji - shounen with shoujo characteristics.

Full Metal Alchemist - science and fighting.

Kurogane - feudal Japan and "pre-industrial" sci-fi.

Romeo X Juliet - like Romeo and Juliet set in a fantasy world.

No Side - sports and gender bender supernatural.

A Night of a Thousand Dreams - the protagonist tells stories, so overall genres are naturally varied.

Baccano! (Novel) - supernatural and historical.

Durarara!! (Novel) - supernatural and slice of life-ish.

7 Seeds is technically a josei manga since it's currently being serialized in Flowers, after the publishers decided that it isn't suited to run in Betsucomi. But I agree that the manga is unusual, even for a josei. Post-apocalyptic survival-horror is something you usually see in seinen.

I think there's something very unique about Shingeki no Kyojin, which is a weird mixture of fantasy, supernatural and sci-fi elements in a medieval setting.

Kurenai Ouji
Shounen romance that isn't a harem or ecchi. There are cute moments that are reminiscent of shoujo without being cheesy. Demons and angels go to school in the human world.

Gosick
Part mystery, part fish-in-the-water, part genius-in-a-doll-like-body, part post-WWI-Europe, part folklore. You can't go wrong with this mixture. Shounen.

Mushi to Medama to Teddy Bear
Student-teacher relationship. Weird girl with an eye-patch. Monsters. Immortality. Shounen.

Hakobune Hakusho
A human girl finds herself attending a school that teaches animals how to be human. Pretty much slice of life, with a bit of psychological drama. Shounen.

March Story
Seinen. A hunter of mysterious creatures that dwell in curious objects. Many touching moments. 17th century Europe. Gender bender. An antique dealer who's too pretty to be a man. A muscled cook who seems to have a crush on the protagonist
Spoiler (highlight to view)
while thinking she's a boy.
