They are not shoujo (sorry, but I disagree with the 'better art' comment), however, Rurouni Kenshin & Seikon no Qwaser fit the description. I would also mention Ubel Blatt, but it may lack in the romance department.
There are tags you can use as well.

There are also tags called 'Dark Past' and 'Tragic Past' that you may want to check out.

Swords or Guns

Guns can be cool, I guess, but Swords always are; they require skill, & there is less chance for a cowardice sneak attack. Men used to duel to preserve their Honor, and the better one would win. It is interesting to see how a Man dies/loses in a Sword fight.
