I can understand why some people thought that later volumes have supposedly 'regressed' in terms of action and strategy, particularly where Chang ge is concerned. I once shared their feelings, but upon reading the series again I find that there’s little ground to back up this claim.
First, there can’t be wars and battles to be fought all the time. The first volume features this theme heavily, but war in itself is not the focus of Chang ge’s journey. It’s about finding herself and finding her allies. This series is elegant and deep, and definitely NOT only about bloodshed, betrayals and vengeance. Second, I want to clear up some possible misconceptions about Chang ge letting go of her vengeance and (so far) dropping her male guise. In what I’d call the second major arc of the story, Chang ge is brought to a peaceful temple, where she learns and reflects her 'Dao’ (path) and 'Shu’ (method). This is where Xia Da pays homage not only to the greatness of ancient Chinese war tactics, but also to its beautiful philosophy. After realising that her vengeance would bring her small personal satisfaction at the cost of her own people and country, Chang ge finally embraces a new goal and her inner desire for peace instead of chaos. It’s not that she forgets and forgives. In her talks with Ashina Sun she still clearly wants to kill Li Shimin, but not knowing how to do so without conflicting it with her new lifelong wish.
As for her disuse of her male guise lately, I like to think that Chang ge is learning more about her own gender identity, which she has been greatly confused about before. Also, her guise is only part of her 'Shu’, as she explained to Sun - they are all the real her. She becomes what is needed in the circumstances to advance her goals.
Okay, after clearing up that point, I’d like to profoundly express how much I admire Xia Da’s work and characters. Chang Ge should be a role model for young girls (and boys) not because she is perfect, but because of she teaches you. She is intelligent and strong, and I mean REALLY intelligent. I’ve read mangas under the tag of 'intelligent/clever female protagonist’ who in reality just falls into the 'shoujo perfect student' trope (good looks, top grades, athletic). Which is not a realistic (or original) portrayal at all. Many shounen manga, on the other hand, is guilty of the opposite. They often mistake a strong female character for just someone who fights as equally as a man. Think about it, how often do you find a female protagonist who is a leader? Who doesn’t need to be one of the best physical fighters in order to be important? ...That’s where Chang ge is awesome.
But Chang ge doesn’t make perfect decisions. She miscalculate, misjudges and pays the price for it. She couldn’t save many people. But through her hardships she grew as a character, always becoming more than the person she’d been from the beginning of her journey. That’s why I believe Chang ge makes a good role model. She isn’t born with perfect talents and the skills. She’s strong because she’s constantly perfecting and remaking herself.

A 'frail, silly and shy girl' is not what the main character becomes. All that happened was that she saw past her hate, realising that revenge would bring her nothing. It would neither restore what had been lost nor would it bring her peace. The series has not lost its path even once.
From the start we meet Chang Ge: skilled, talented, smart and overcome with hate. She is extremely likeable, and for me she is probably one of my favourite female characters of all time. However the author does not leave Chang Ge's character at this point - we get to see her grow and improve through the series.
Moving on from the amazing plot, the pacing and story telling is also amazing. From the first utilisation of a childhood flashback where we see Wei Zheng telling her that 'the line between protecting one's self and bullying others is very thin' (a direct referral to her uncle's actions that we as readers are aware was in order to protect himself) to the most recent chapters, the author never places unnecessary material in the story and everything only serves to widen the world within the story. The only complaint I can think of is that there is a lot of exposition, which is necessary but quite long at times.
Also the art is beautiful. Definite 10/10

My favourite growth in her character is her acknowledgement of the futility of her wish to kill her uncle - the conclusion that revenge brings nothing is one that too many characters are unable to come to. Through the series we see Chang Ge realise her true wish. When she must leave Shuo Province she thinks not of her inability to kill her uncle any more, but of how much she would miss her homeland. We also see her reflecting on her own emotions when she acknowledges the anger of the people, saying that 'when fear and sadness are too great people turn to hate to survive'. In her meeting with Luo Yun she proves again that her love for the people living in her country overpowers her wish for revenge. As general Luo Yun says, though he may have lost the right to call himself the king of Yan, 'she is still the princess of the Tang Dynasty'. It is in her time at the temple that she comes at peace with her decision to not take revenge but instead help in trying to improve the lives of the people.

Chang Ge's discovery of her limits is harsh and, in her failure to protect and the loss of important people in her life, she loses her ability to move forward. I do not think for a moment that she spent too long being sad. In the recent events she had no one to blame and she no longer knew what to do. Her experiences and time at the temple were extremely necessary in letting her accept her weakness and grow.

This manga started great with a strong female lead who wanted to avenge her family's death and with all these skills and inteligence she had, she started gaining allies to do so; however, as the story progressed, she has become a frail, silly and shy girl, like any other typical shoujo protagonist, and has given up on her former plans of revenge. Imo, there's no way to save the story at this point. If you've read Vinland saga, it's kinda like that on that aspect. This manga is pure shoujo material after the first 2 arcs and that's ok. It just not my cup of tea.
And so the people who left comments bashing my critique should just grow a pair and realise that people may read the same books, watch the same movie, etc but we all don't share the same opinion and views and so, one person may find a manga mediocre but another may think that it's a masterpiece. deal with it. :-P

I've read this since 2013 and I always think how stunning the art and the story of this manga. The art (which is very detail, beautiful, and suck my emotion) alone had made my eyes paused much longer than others manga/manhua I've ever read. And the super-awesome plot made this series my favorite-ever manga/manhua.
Chang ge is awesome. Not always awesome, though. There were times when I want to kick her to make her move on from her sadness. But she did move on, and the author did provide necessary time for her to grab her resolution back, in beautiful and meaningful pace. And this what make her human. Actually, I love how this manhua showed human as human. Ashina, Chang ge, Ah Dou, every character in this manhua is so human. Yeah, though Chang ge such a badass.
Romance pace is very slow, but it's indeed here. The latest chapter I read (41) finally make me, a fangirl, jump with excitement (basically, I excited for every small romance hint between Sun and Chang ge, hahaha).
Highly recommended.

The female character is hands down the best in all manga I've read so far. She is awesome!!! For the first time we have a female character who is on par with the main male character, Such a relief!
It was a good series at first. Picking up and building the main character, showing us a couple things she's capable of...and then it dropped and all the strategy was gone...Just died. Felt silly for liking it at all.
This piece of work is simply great. One thing that I noticed was how the author made the transition of Ashina Sun (Main love interest?) from a barbaric tribe general, who seemed ruthless and scary, to a more subtle and calmer character right after he found out his true origins and that Li Chang Ge was a girl. It happened so fast that it was sort of weird to me....When he was first introduced, he was a cold blooded warrior on the battlefields. I guess it was weird seeing him dress up and act so...mannered(?) later on.
Regardless, great manga. I'm happy it was recommended!

I absolutely love this!!
-Strong female lead
-Wuxia setting but more based on the "normal" aspect rather than the fantastical martial arts. But it does have it.
- The artwork, pacing, story are all amazing.
I grew up watching wuxia series so this was wonderful to read. And its not too cluttered with long expositions or crazy happenings. Its just...great.

Number one thing why this is possibly one of the BETTER Shoujo's (as tagged) out there.... The main character. Yes, she is female. No, she isn't unsurprisingly weak. Change Ge is witty, strong, very smart - literally a genius. She's calm in the face of battle/death and can somehow THINK her way through it. A very capable girl who can actually fight for herself.
Besides the great protagonist this story has, the artwork is a-ma-zing. It's absolutely beautiful and detailed to the core. The plot is interesting and keeps me going - like, what is Chang Ge going to do next? Very captivating and engaging.

The only way to describe this webtoon is FLAWLESS... to me at least. I'm a sucker for strong ladies but the main character blew my expectations away. It's possible to have a good, strong character and still develop that character as the story goes on.
I've been so bothered by the scarcity of strategic minded women, but now I can rest in peace (somewhat).
Recommended to anyone who hasn't read it yet.
