Interesting and Unique

For the first time in who knows how long, the female lead remains strong. The attention to historical details is a plus and the story line captivates my attention. I was not able to stop reading this and the characters are so admirable. This is one of the few mangas that I might actually accept rereading. Makes me fangirl even without romance (even though a little bit of romance wouldn't hurt).

A Shimmering Pearl of a Story

Chang Ge Xing is simply AMAZING. A gripping plot, fascinating characters, and beautiful art all combine to produce a flawless manga. As the series expands its scope to follow up on characters who have parted ways, the story also grows to encompass more than a simple revenge plot. Chang Ge evolves throughout the story as not only a genius tactician but also a student of political intrigue and manipulation. Hands down one of my favorite protagonists ever, and her relationship with Ashina Sun is fantastic. These two never fail to wreak merry hell when they're together.

Genre-wise I'd compare it to a fusion of Vinland Saga and Otoyomegatari, as strange as that may seem. But in this case this alternate history with a generous dose of fantastical elements really has the best of both worlds. So definitely give it a shot!

One of the best historical fiction

Chang Ge Xing is outstanding in terms of character growth, plot, and art. What more can you ask for in a historical? The story isn't merely captivating - it actually has a lot of depth to it. Most of all, none of the characters (including the supporting characters) are flat or static. They are all very realistic and three-dimensional. This story caught my attention from the very beginning and it has me eagerly waiting for the next release. I wish I can buy the books English-translated!

When a true gem like this comes along, it makes you realize just how good manga/manhua can be. You love and get used to the average quality but this,
this is on a whole other level.I was captivated, crying, envisioning this story the author created.
I can not wait for more,
its going to be constantly on my mind for awhile, thinking of what could possibly happen next..

this is a truly fantastic tale.

I could keep singing praises about Chang Ge Xing. The webtoon starts out with Chang Ge wanting to avenge the death of her family, but it transforms into so much more. Wanting revenge is just a part of who she is, not her entire self. She is not consumed with the need for revenge and we can clearly see that she is a teenager. She prides herself on her knowledge and believes she knows everything. But, she is continuously proven wrong and learns from her mistakes.

The political machinations occurring in Chang Ge Xing are very subtle. An attack is not thrown at you out of nowhere. The webtoon keeps changing perspectives to give a sense of mystery and at the same time gives hints of the current affairs.

So initially you may be confused and be turned off by the slow pacing and plethora of names like I was. But please don't give up! Once you get through a few chapters the thought of giving up won't even cross your mind.

(Truly) Masterpiece...

I'll just copy my comment from Vagabond

May the opinion will differ among the readers, I will still say that this manga is one of the masterpiece that I found during my journey in life. Hahaha... well, I guess a bit exaggeration will bring no harm, especially for this manga... Okay let's start reviewing...

The story is magnificent overall (truly...), yet may some readers can not tolerate the slowing pace in some arc. As for me, this slowing pace is quite understandable and necessary. It's necessary because with the slowing pace, I could relate more with the "enlightened" process that Li got during some arc. And somehow, I get "enlightened" too...

The art... is magnificent (truly...),

The romance, comedy, saddening event, etc. is composed magnificently (truly)... no too much, not too little, all is put with the right amount (so far)

I mus say I learn a lot by reading manga... it forms my perspective in seeing life and, I can say, it forms my personality as well. This one... is the one who taught me a lot... once again... a lot.

Thanks for the author of the manga and the novel (and of course, the scanlators)... Hope the God will repay you somehow... Now I understand why my oldman often says, "Learn, even if you must go to China"

Gripping story and beautiful art.

Take your average girl goes to war in disguise, add Lelouch-like intellect, epic historical politics and warfare and you have Cheng Ge Xing. The story is well told and characters grow and develop with time. This is both a war, revenge and coming of age story for Cheng Ge.

P.S. This would make an amazing anime! (There's a Chinese Drama of the same name BUT that has nothing at all to do with this one, that drama is a cheesy period drama set in a totally different world about totally different people)

If I had to pick one favourite thing about this masterpiece, it would probably be the main character. Change Ge is brilliant. I find that strong, intelligent protagonists like her are scarce, much less strong, intelligent female protagonists that are not belittled through objectification. Change Ge is charismatic, collected and brave. She's not a great female character, she's a great character. At the same time, she's not invincible. I find her likeable because while she is confident in her abilities, she is humbled by her mistakes, and she grows and learns from them. It's very easy to root for her.

And that's only one thing. I can sing praises about the detailed artwork or the engaging plot and the subtle political machinations that seem to be taking place.

I agree that the beginning is kind of hard to grasp at first, what with all the names and dates and such. But you'll be hooked very soon. I promise you.

A great read not to be overlooked

A very strong willed, and intelligent female lead, yet the author still crafts a character with plenty of room for growth and character development. The beginning was confusing at first, (lots of characters popping up and hard to figure out what their positions were), but it definitely got better after that.

Lovely art, but at times it's hard for me to distinguish some characters later on in the series without looking twice.

A great read for the intriguing story (it definitely did not lead me to where I thought it would after the first few chapters!), and great character development and great characters.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)

If anything, the character even degenerates in terms of relative strength in the series. In the first few chapters, she is seen as invincible: jumping across mountains and taking down foes with ease. As the series progresses, she realizes more and more of her faults. As the reader, through the lens of her experience, you are humbled by the little knowledge and skill she actually has. This is really quite rare for a manga where most people "gain" skills/knowledge by triumphing against a foe. In this series, the main character truly learns from her mistakes. She seems strong initially, but she actually is weak. Still, she is growing as a person and as a character, which makes this series very different from conventional ones and makes for an exciting read.
