Disappointing even by Mushoku-clone standards.

This is a pretty meta series.

Originally, this kind of story is that a boy and his friends are taken to a fantasy world where they battle a great evil, growing stronger after each conflict and challenge.

Then the stories become one kind of LN cliché and the boy is immediately OP. It's turned from moderate wish-fulfilment to a cheat-code user's dream of someone who hacks into the gibson and takes over the story by using a trainer. Mushoku Tensei comes to mind.

(Then you have the stories where the main character is underpowered and has to become Batman, which are better on average...)

But here.

Here the ostracized otaku, who is hated because the pretty girl in his class actually pays attention to him, here he is taken to a fantasy world with everyone that hates him (+ the girl and some other people) and becomes the weakest of the weak, has a crap crafting style class and a cynical outlook on how the story of this particular world will turn out to be.

So the author lets him fall down into the abyss in a dungeon in almost the exact same way Gandalf does and turns the boy from an underpowered crafter into a demon-flesh eating hax-machine with 10000 in every stat and skills up the wazoo and a vampire waifu he saves and his hair turns white and the mighty HERO who came with him maxes out at a bit over 1000 and he creates a gun using fantasy minerals AND IT'S ALSO A RAILGUN, also it's a revolver...

Every single thing I wrote there is true. Not a single ounce of hyperbole. The 10000 stat thing IS CANON.

How many layers are here, people? How deep are we in the rabbit hole? It's not a question about suspension of disbelief ("he succeeds at this because he finds a magical jewel thing that seeps out HP+MP potion yadda yadda it's a super rare thing that hasn't been seen in a gazillion years etc. etc.") it's about *moderation*.

Sure, make your MC op if you want, but this, this is just obscene. This author isn't just a first level otaku-wish-fulfiller, he's up to level five. People who hate him because an otaku -> they are defeated by the otaku mwahahaha x a million.

In addition to this, the text is about 40% exposition about things the main character has no knowledge about. There's no sense of mystery or discovery. I won't comment on the writing itself because it's filtered through unedited translation.

The author lost his way halfway through the story

The story started in a cliche'd way - guy gets sent to fantasy world to become a hero - although for once, the whole class was transported. Well it's only logical that by transporting a whole group of people, there will be one or two odd ones in the lot. Hajime (the MC) is this one.

This is a setting that I've seen quite a lot recently in fantasy webnovels : the MC gets transported but is very weak, he also has some kind of power deemed as useless but after a few chapters, the MC is so overpowered no one can stand up against him. That's the case here.

Don't get me wrong, the novel was fine up to the point where Hajime became overpowered even though I'll have to admit the author really forced the Deus Ex Machina to make that happen...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Let's say that there was something like 1 chance over 1,000,000,000 for Hajime to survive that fall off the cliff, not get killed by the monsters AND get his hands on Holy Water

Even then, the story still had some purpose in my opinion. Hajime developed an interesting personality and gets enough power to make the story entertaining.

However, the first problem occurred when the Author decided to introduce us to a new character, a.k.a "Love Interest Number 1 - Yue the vampire". She was the beginning of the end for this novel due to the fact that she will turn that awesome cold and cool mood the novel offered into a love-filled story. But even then, the story was still bearable at that point.

It gets really unreadable once "Love Interest Number 2 - Shia the rabbit" is introduced to us. This character, in addition to being annoying in every single scene she's in, will totally destroy the serious mood that the author had spent a whole volume setting up, she will turn this Psychological Fantasy Novel into a Romcom Harem and she will lead to the story making less and less sense as the romcom moments take over the serious moments.

It is also worth mentioning that Hajime's original and enjoyable personality becomes affected by the increasing harem.

Also,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
He's stupid if he thinks he can go back to his original world after having killed his classmates, especially if he thinks he can just randomly bring his non-human harem with him

To conclude, one can feel that the author had a great plot in mind at the beginning of the first volume but it was all ruined when he tried to add unwanted things to his novels, thus making it more cliche'd than everything else. Which is why, as a conclusion, I present to you the list of all the cliches in this novel :

Stupid overpowered harem leader MC - check
Blonde loli vampire - check
Airhead comic relief girl - check
Perverted masochist who is ALWAYS horny - check
Overused transportation in a fantasy word setting - check
Rival with a plain and unilateral personality - check
Demon vs. Humans war - check
Harem increases for no apparent reason - check

Yes, I called Hajime stupid and I maintain it. He may be pragmatic in battle, but his overall goals are just plain naive and idiotic. He thinks before acting but he hasn't thought anything through in the longer term.

The Logic that is not there.

Before you even start reading this novel, put aside your brain for a moment because if you don't you won't enjoy it and will question the writing and the logic behind it.

Example: character STR: 10, demon strength: probably above 200. Demon kick character, character arm is only broken from the impact.

If you somehow just say " fuck it, this is a fantasy novel and I shouldn't put logic into this" Then it will be a nice simple story that you will enjoy reading just so you can say "hahaha, take that F***** that betray the main character"

It started well and then it went downhill. The change in MC`s character is poorly done - I don`t see the link between the timid, kind boy at the beginning and the cold anti-hero afterwords. I believe that after the change any worth in the story was completely corrupted.

I was kind of bored in the beginning because it felt like the introduction was dragging. It starts out with your typical weak/nice hero type that gets picked on and such. The popular girl in school protecting him. But....that changes drastically.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
One of his classmates betrays him, and he goes to the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Not wanting to help anyone, killing anything that gets in his way. But he doesn't completely lose his humanity and he's slowly moving back towards the hero side a little, which is good in my opinion. He isn't a saint, but he isn't just a killing machine now either.

Wish fulfillment
by Creeper

This is pure wish fulfillment in the spirit of "Re-Monster" and I absolutely love that. Why some people consider the MC to be a bully I have no idea as he is only cruel to monsters trying to kill him and girls trying to molest him but whatever. Cliche story about a guy who goes from zero to anti-hero after going through hell. If you like Re-Monster or Master of Monsters then you will like this as well.

The MC doesn't "become a bully"

He doesn't.
minor spoilers
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I mean, he becomes really pragmatic, but that doesn't make him a bully. There's a difference between refusing to help someone and actively antagonizing them; and he only does the former.

just because the MC isn't running around saving every damsel in distress he comes across,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
although up to where I am in vol. 4 he basically DOES rescue all two of them, and even buries the dead guy,
he's not running around looting and murdering innocents. I suppose if you can't stand anything less than a shining white knight as the MC, then this isn't the novel for you; otherwise, it's a great read.

You could relate this protagonist to the one in Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (Novel), another great read.

The story had potential once, but it squandered it

This started out well enough, even if the protagonist became incredibly overpowered very quickly. Still, I enjoyed the first arc. After that, I could barely stand to read it when the protagonist who was a victim of bullies became a bully himself. It just gets worse from there.

Even considering how cliche and self-indulgent this kind of story is, this is pretty poorly done.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Starts off interesting with the MC having a weak but very flexible ability. Then the MC acquires a hax ability and it goes downhill fast.

The first arc was pretty good, it went downhill after that. Congrats Chuuni Suki, for ruining your own chance to break into the big boys club. Just call it quit, plan another title, and make sure, you actually build a structure before you actually write...
