I am looking for something where the main characters are in their late teens or 20s.
Other requirements:
- Not primarily focused on romance - something else motivates the characters (romantic subplots are fine - but no huge age gaps).
- Not too serious (humour is good, quirky characters are good)
- University stories ok (high school not ok.)
- Pretty pictures a must.
- Well paced story (I like things plotty and interesting)
- No BL/GL/yaoi/yuri/smut/ecchi
Stuff that mostly fits and that I really like:
Saiyuki(Kazuya MINEKURA in general)
Youth Gone Wild
Nodame cantabile
Record of fallen vampire
Baccano (anime)
Doubutsu no Oishasan

Nana
Love this manga. So many different elements to it . . .
btw, the two main characters are both 20 in the beginning of the manga. Their friends and love interests are all within 5 or so years of their age.

Kuragehime
Ashita no Ousama
Hachimitsu to Clover
And I know you were saying high school's not okay, but if you haven't read Paradise Kiss, I think it's what you're after too? (School is only briefly featured in this manga really, and I think the characters seem older then they are? Give it a go anyway!)

Ghost Hunt - although the main girl is still in high school, it's not centered in high school at all. That is, if you don't mind horror stories

I think he's in his mid 20s: Fredward-Shi no Ahiru. Interesting premise and story. Pretty art although may be too old-styled for some people
Also, I like Alexandrite. It's a journey to find your identity and your roots. So I do think this is a fun read. Not too heavy or all serious. There are hilarious moments, some bits of cute moments (there's a pinch of romance although not really the focus I think). And art is okay. I like the style but some people have different preference. If you survive Nodame, I think you should be able to survive this one. The character is a bit dense sometimes: Ambro is definitely quirky while Alex is well a bit unpredictable sometimes.
Pink Lady maybe the focus is love at the first parts of the story but then it developed into something better. It's a story about finding your dreams and how far you are willing to pay to get those dreams. I kind of get a bit of Nodame in this manhwa... meaning the plots may have similarities. But Nodame is definitely a masterpiece so it beats this manhwa by way thousands of miles.... hahaha

Honey Bitter, she's 20...
Kiss and Never Cry (I think she's 18, but I've never seen her in school,so I'm assuming she's out)

1/2 Prince / 1/2 Prince (Novel) - she's 19, most of the cast is around that age or older.
The Legend of Sun Knight / The Legend of Sun Knight (Novel) - he's 24. He looks younger at the start of the manhua, but the art style changes to make the characters look their age, starting at volume two.
Eclipse Hunter (Novel) - one is 15, but the other is 25. The first chapter is serious, but the humor starts up soon after.
If you liked Baccano, you might like Durarara (anime) by the same author and animation company.
Cheese in the Trap
Noblesse - the kids are in high school, but the main characters are...well, they range from decades to centuries old, but they look like they're in their 20s. The beginning has the kids as somewhat main characters, but there's a deep and interesting plot following the older protagonists, so it's definitely worth reading.
The Moonlight Sculptor (Novel)

Just thought I'd bump this up to see if anyone has anymore suggestions.
I just love the Legend of the Sun Knight - it is hilarious. I started with the manhua but the novel is so much better .
And I like the artwork in Fredward-Shi no Ahiru - it is really pretty. I started Ludwig Kakumei as well which is good fun.
I'm finding the coming-age-stories hard to get into - what I like about Nodame is the music and their careers and the quirky characters - the rest I just got a bit bored with.
