not looking for a specific genre.

manga or manhwa that is empowering women in a way– ignoring gender roles and such.

My taste is so vain so go read Chitra
This doesn't ignore gender roles, it actually reverses it. I find it extremely funny it's so shallow of me.

Wombs - Since the premise might throw you off, here's some commentary on this series from the translator:
Quote from Hox
What I hope I've made clear here is not my ability to sound like some BS-spewing English lit major, but the fact that mangaka Shirai Yumiko really has done something quite rare not only in manga but likely in other mediums as well. We have here not one, but an entire army corps full of action heroines who neither abandon their female identities nor define it solely through sexualization. Through assaults to their womanhood and female identities on multiple levels (individual, corps, army, wider society), they remain action heroines who are unquestionably female and deal with feminine issues. Their situation compels them to fight because they are female, and they have the ability to fight because they are female as well.

Hmm I usually read Chinese novels for these kind of empowered women. There's a lot of strong female protagonist striving hard against the patriarchal system type of stories written. Try the rebirth of malicious empress of military lineage or greetings, ninth uncle. They tend to be classist though.

For manga I don't know one that expressly have women trying to fight against patriarchy. But if you just like strong women in the physical sense I suggest Dorohedoro and Teppu.

Without knowing your trope and genre preferences, I'll just plop whatever I've read that might fit here.
I'm mostly adding stories where the lead either:
A. Has physical or magical combat skills
B. Pursues a traditionally non-feminine job or role
C. Otherwise just kind of breaks the mold, even if they don't fit categories A or B.
I've starred my super favorites with an asterisk*.
(I read a lot of romance and fantasy sooo many of these are uuuh romance based! Hope that's alright.)

Webcomics:
(A) His Majesty Secret Heroine
(A) The Lady and the Beast (Hongseul)
(A) The Huntress and Her Love Prey
(A) The Golden-Haired Summoner
(A) Knight in Flight
(A) Master Villainess the Invincible!
(A/C) Amina of the Lamp*
(B) Empress Cesia Wears Knickerbockers*
(A) Caught by the Villain
(A/C) Bring the Love**
(A?/C) The Spark in Your Eyes*
(A/C) Beware the Villainess!*
(A) Light and Shadow (Ryu Hyang)
(A/C) The Knight and Her Emperor*

Modern Setting Webcomics:
(C) The Roommate Agreement
(C) The Wolf & Red Riding Hood
(C) The Lady and Her Butler**
(A/B) Night Crying Crow*

Manga:
(A) Immortal Rain*
(B/C) The Apothecary Diaries***
(A/B) Apothecarius Argentum
(A/B) Song of the Long March***
(A) Yona of the Dawn

Modern Setting Manga:
(C) Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
(A/B) Koroshi Ai

Hopefully others will come with less romance-and-fantasy oriented options.
