Hmm...well, even though Maria-sama ga Miteru is classified as Yuri, there's pretty much no obvious romance. Completely subtext 😉 Though I must admit it hasn't been finished yet, but it doesn't look like it will ever be written (except in fanfics anyways). Also, Strawberry Marshmallow has some yuri subtext...am I the only one who sees it? I second Lucky Star as Konami is one of my favorite pairings. There's also some Yuri subtext (may need magnifying glasses for this) in Rozen Maiden...despite the fact that they are not only dolls, but technically sisters XD And some more yuri subtext in Murder Princess and some more in Kaibutsu Oujo...wow, never realized how much I loved yuri lol

I'm going to agree with Nabari No Ou and Tactics; Nabari No Ou being more interesting reguardless and Tactics being purely for subtext.

Kuroshitsuji also has alot of subtext but it is a little squicky because most of it is between a boy who turns 13 and his Demonic Butler.

Also: but less so: Natsume Yuugin Chou.a great series anyway. I think anyone who liked "Spirited Away" should ador this series for it's imaginative imagery and beautiful characters. There is this movie-star character who takes any chance he gets to flirt with and fondle Natsume: a little weird but still innocent enough to be palatable.

Love this topic 🙂

I am sorda into this too, but not really for the gayness. I just value good friendship. Thats why if they kiss or go any further than that romantically, I won't read any farther. It just ruins it for me. I guess you could say that I prefer very LIGHT subtext.

Anyways, I second Kurogane and Fai from Tsubasa . Out of what I've seen, that's your best example right there. I STRONGLY suggest this one.

Also Nabari No Ou . Beautiful story. So great.

My first exampe of this kind of thing came from Furuba, between Hatsuharu and Yuki. It was also my first manga. But they both end up with chics, which I like, but I dunno if you would.

I don't think anyones mentioned Pandora Hearts . Raven is Oz's servant and I think there might be some subtext there.

I second Di(e)ce . But daggonit I wish someone would scanlate the rest of the thing. I need to learn japanese. 🙄

Well, most of my favourite subtext series have already been mentioned 😢 But I think I can name a few others:
1001 Nights Might fit, not 100% positive though, been a long time since I read that.
Gorgeous Carat
Kyou Kara Maou Maybe, kinda. Although one of the main characters is really too stupid to realize anything -.-' But if you decide to read this, I recommend watching the anime instead, because the manga hasn't really been translated past volume 3 while the anime has 90+ episodes
I second Yami no Matsuei This is the best manga ever, with two great main characters and 11 volumes filled with subtext. Shame it's on hiatus though 🙁
I hope this helps!

It really depends on how you interpret it. Some of the mentioned are just close friendships or admiration while others are a bit too much for no reason (therefore can be thought of as shounen-ai, shoujo-ai?).

Nabari no Ou has a subtext between the main characters.

But they are not even the same sex. XD

I think I should add:
07-Ghost
Tengujin
Midnight Sun
Kamui

ah, good topic appeared. too bad too much fantasy.

one title may be added, though it sounds kind of heretical and kitschy. well, homunculus.

MY HEAVENS DID *I *START THIS THREAD?
is happily clicking all the suggestions

Anyway, some of my own suggestions:
Poe no Ichizoku is one of the first bl series, but it's really entirely subtext. It's very nice and dark in a quiet way.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is full of this, especially in title character Utena and her "rose bride" Anthy. The movie makes it canon.

There's also plenty in everything CLAMP has ever made.

Banana Fish is also a great example of this, between Ash and Eiji. By the 7th book they're pledging to stay together forever. It's a great series besides.

Her earlier work Kawa Yori mo Nagaku Yuruyaka ni also has a lot of this.

There's also some in Rose of Versailles that comes along with being a gorgeous female crossdresser.

And, of course, there's Axis Powers Hetalia, which uses this for comedic and fanservice value between every single character. (But not the female ones)

If you guys want an anime suggestion, the Gakuen Heaven anime is very subtext-y. (Edit: It is intentional, though.)

Please note: NOT the manga (especially some of the doujin), just the anime.

Basically, all the so-called shounen mangas that run in Comic Zero Sum, G Fantasy, and Ward fall under this category.

Quote from stubborn blob

I think you're right, and it's intentional. The mangaka's other work, Ichi the Killer, also has homoerotic undertones.

I've also always thought Piano no Mori had subtext...

Comic Zero Sum and Ward are josei magazines. GFantasy should be shoujo instead. 🤣 But not all the manga in it are like that though.

Cotton is classified as shoujo-ai, but really, it's pure this. It's very sweet and nice.

I can't believe no one mentioned Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn! yet, it attracted a great fujoshi following in Japan! There are subtext all over the place, which even the AUTHOR admits.

Others I would recommend are:

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
xxxHolic
Executive Committee
Wild Adapter
Kuroshitsuji

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi also has some sort of subtext, IMO, especially the part where Koizumi actually said that he likes Kyon (however you want to interpret this is up to you). And a particular incident in the light novels....
