I don't read yaoi or shounen-ai at all, but I'd go so far as to say that the majority of CLAMP's works are ladden with subtext. I mean, CCS? I was a kid when I first say that series, and even I could pick up on the insinuated "thing" between Yukito and Touya. no pun intended, btw 🤣

This thread has made my unconscious favour towards subtext, realized 😀

+C Sword and Cornett [url] http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=28027 (Linna's little crush on Belca is still there I think
🤣 )

And I dunno, but Pandora Hearts[url]http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=9709. It's not too subtextual, but the guys have pretty close friendships/bonds/whatever; Gilbert with Oz and Vincent with his brother complex....

I know I have a few that aren't mentioned here...I would have to go take a look at my archives, and I'm too lazy to do that right now. 😔 lol

So, I'm not entirely sure if this is right (I can never tell), and I don't know if its already been suggested, but it does seem that Banana Fish is what you're looking for.

Lol, masochists unite! Uh, maybe 07 Ghost? Like hell they're ever going to put actual yaoi in. Hm, Replica is set up like your typical shounen story actually. Only, instead of the unbelievably powerful GIRL that the protagonist meets, there's a powerful BOY. Who looks like a girl. Yeah.

Omg hollyivy! I hadn't read Replica b4~ Yay!

I've just realized that there are actually scanlation groups that specialize in subtext. _

In case it helps anyone, here they are:

Hyper Parfait - pretty much ALL their projects 😃
The Black Abyss - again, I'd say all their projects
Bliss - their non-BL projects
Storm in Heaven - most (if not all) of their non-BL projects
Scarlet Carnival - almost all their projects

LOTS of subtexty reading in there. 😉

Does anyone know of other such groups?

I feel obliged to add Burning Hell, which I have only recently begun reading and which, despite its "womanizing" leads, is SO subtexty it makes my head spin.

These are the guys, visually a typical beauty-and-beast pair (though behaviorally, they're both beasts, really), and when they fight together, the onlookers are forced to admit that "they move as if they are one entity," and even one of the girls they're supposedly aiming for says, "you two are real soulmates". o___O;

Yeah. Pretty gay. 🤣

I guess nobody has mentioned these manga yet...
Asterisk - two main characters are very close friends. And they are angels. And they are very, very cute. There's a lot of subtext (there are many characters in this manga, but almost all of them are male), but very innocent. Please don't be put off by all these cute things in the beginning (bunnies, kittens, flowers etc), later the manga becomes darker, and there's more action.

Ilegenes The main character is a bit emo, and his friend is worried about him (I don't want to put too many spoilers here, sorry). There's an obvious tension between them. And again, there are almost no women there (in fact, I can't remember any female character).

Yeah, Bliss and Storm in Heaven do have a lot of subtext. To name a few more: Doublets, Angel's Doubt, Olimpos, Kimi to Boku (i wish! god, this one just kills me), Are you Alice?, Cucumber Sandwich, NG Life, Men's Kou, Natsume Yuujinchou, Holyland, Saijou no Meii, Izayakaku . Believe me, in my head, all these pretty, pretty boys are all...nevermind. You don't want to know what is in my head.
Edit: Found more. SO MUCH HIDDEN GAY. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist
Teriyaki Western- subtext here is almost cruel. They have a yaoi fangirl, for god's sake.

HOMG HOLLYIVYYYYYYY, so much NEW GAY LOL. I am thrilled beyond words. Can you PLEASE PLEASE tell me (in spoiler-quotes if necessary) the exact nature of the subtext in Natsume Yuujinchou, Holyland, Saijou no Meii, Izayakaku and Teriyaki Western? Like, is it between the leads? 😀 😀 😀 Is it based on friendship or enmity or servitude? OMG AND AND... Which is the subtextiest of all? 😀 😀 😀 Just so I can decide which to read first! (Obviously I must read them all. I mean I started on NY but somehow forgot to continue - the rest are completely new to me.)

Sorry for being greedy even after your awesome recs but I am SO thrilled, seriously, I had thought that I had read every even remotely gay-like manga in existence, but I am happily proven wrong. rolls onto back like a doggie showing affection

Thank you so much!

Cristo - Jougan no Messiah
The Mysterious Stories of Ghost Moon Tower (Only two chapters so far, but soooo pretty <3)
Fushigi no Kuni no Miyuki-chan - 100% Pure shoujo ai Subtext by Clamp.
Gakuen Tokukei Duklyon - Clamp Again. 100% crack and so gay it hurts. ["Oh, come on lover! Dont be such a grouch.. "]

I had to add my two cents in. I suggest Black Sun, Silver Moon. The tags say shounen-ai, but I've read the manga for awhile and can say that I haven't seen anything happen between the two main characters. Plus, it's so cute, you must read it.

Also, did anyone mention God Child, yet? That's certainly a manga full of subtext.

I have to say thank you to the OP and everyone who gave suggestions! These are really awesome.

Am I the only one that sensed loads of tension between the female leads in The Kidnapping of Minja Jo's Boyfriend?

I mean, seriously. All the sexual tension that goes along with fighting and being arch enemies aside, Minja Jo actually went to the effort of stealing every single one of Jung-Sook's past love interests so that she could have her to herself. (As her sister-in-law, but whatever.)

Loads and loads in Helter Skelter between the plastic surgery girl and her gofer.
To be honest, I'm not sure why it isn't marked as yuri.
Wait, does it count as subtext if they have sex?
