Yes, I paid for physical copies of manga before. I currently own ... a bit over 100 volumes of several manga .... Man that's a lot of money for an average of $10 a pop.
I have never brought a digital manga before, and probably won't in the future either....

» philip72 on August 30th, 2014, 7:44am

You're not missing much.

I'm subscribed to Viz and Crunchyroll, and both have garbage, 3rd-rate, unusable readers and occasionally iffy translations. They're also deathly afraid of perceived weabooism, so they localize everything to hillbilly American.
It's sad that a motley assortment of scanlators and free readers provide a far better product than the legal pay sites.

I only subscribe because I have money and it assuages my guilt over not supporting the mangaka. Although buying the physical volumes is a far better way to support them.

thread

» thevampirate on August 30th, 2014, 9:36am

I personally wouldn't mind supporting crunchy roll if they improved their quality. they seem more interested in preventing people from getting their scans than providing good service. Is it that hard to make a usable reader?

thread

» philip72 on August 30th, 2014, 10:18pm

It really is abysmal. Although I'm a paying subscriber, I virtually never visit Viz or Crunchyroll anymore, and stick with the pirated content almost exclusively. Better readers, no weaboo fright, and (often) better quality translations.

jokes on you that a lot of people who work for crunchyroll come from scanlations

Doesn't mean they have any say in decisions. Bad, lazy management, terrible style guide and inferior infrastructure are the problem, not where some of the employees learned their trade.

Gets expensive over time.

One thing I wished about digital manga was that they were actually much cheaper than they are now. I'm willing to shell out for a physical copy, but when companies make the digital not that much cheaper, it just never seems worth it. ($1+ per chapter adds up!) Nevermind the companies that have shitty online readers or force you to read through their app (for manga you paid for!).

thread

» Perfect1 on August 29th, 2014, 10:14pm

I think I have more than 300 volumes of manga.
Most of them are in English and in my native language but some are in Japanese.
Some were bought at full price, most were at a discount (all of the English ones since they cost about 20 dollars which is way too much) and some were even used copies.

I have never bought a digital copy of a manga and probably never will.

In one volume by Yumeka Sumomo. One volume. Man, I feel guilty... but I partially blame the manga industry in my country! If there were other works (even in english!) that I love (not so famous mangakas, stories ou even genres like seinen/josei/yaoi), I would totally pay for it (exactly the reason why I bought the only volume by Yumeka: I love her art).

Edit: I could try online, but I don't have a international card and it takes months... plus taxes!

Last time I counted, I believe I owned about 260+ volumes of English-translated manga, and 28 Japanese tankoubon. ...Ironically, the doujinshi I have probably add up to cost more. Lots and lots.

I've reached around 3000 volumes read though (about 2200 of those recorded on booklog). And there are still lots of series I want to buy. I don't have the money or the space right now, though. :c

thread

» hkanz on August 29th, 2014, 11:00pm

I think I own about 15 volumes, but I haven't bought any for years - I have no permanent residence so really nowhere to store it, and buying just to resell is a huge nuisance. I do, however, have plans to buy a bunch of manga when I do get a permanent residence (hopefully not for another 20 or 30 years). Though probably some of them will be out of print by then...

thread

» RoxFlowz on August 29th, 2014, 11:11pm

thread

» lunaballz on August 29th, 2014, 11:19pm

I have quite a few, both in English and Japanese. The Japanese ones I got for super cheap at Book Off though (like 100 yen cheap). Most of them I bought in my teen years, I don't buy them very often anymore; just the ones I really like and want to support.

I'm really surprised at how many have never paid for it though. No wonder companies like Tokyopop have gone out of business.

thread

It is surprising how many people never paid before. I have not bought any in awhile but that only cause I need money for overly expensive textbooks. I only have physical copies.

I have all the english volumes of Yotsuba&, a few each of Naruto, Parasyte, Gunslinger Girl, Scott Pilgrim, Nightschool, Inukami. I have at least 1, maybe 2 Large sterilite boxes of SJ issues. I was more than happy to sign up for SJ Alpha (digital), since my local bookstore closed, and our Wal-Mart and Target carried Jump irregularly, at best. I jumped at the chance to support Crunchyroll's manga offering, as well.

I like to give artists my money - when they deserve it.

Yes, I've purchased 3 official translated English mangas and some Japanese mangas for studying Kanji.

I only buy Official English translated manga of my favorite Mangaka/Series. (for instance Barakamon.)
Though it costs me $10+ per volume, it's worth it to buy since it supports the mangaka you like. wink

Yeah I've bought a few series I know I enjoyed and would read again, because nothing beats reading a physical book.
I'm stopping getting any more new series though. I don't have the space, so I'm just buying the ones that are unfinished. Waiting for new releases 'n stuff so yeah. Gotta support the industry.

I never thought I would ever buy manga (due to the convenience of scanlations), but once I started buying, I kept buying, and now I have an entire shelf of purchased hardcopies! I guess scanlations actually helped bring me in as a customer because I bought the actual books after 'sampling' them as scanlated digital copies...

Not only just in English, but in Japanese & in French too.

I also own close to 15 artbooks as well.

Hmm.. This is kinda the same as that one poll not so long ago, though this time it includes digital as well. My collection remains the same as back then since I haven't added any new series to it. I haven't paid for anything digital as of yet.

Quote
Ai Yori Aoshi
Inuyasha
Ranma ½
Claymore
Mahou Sensei Negima!
GTO
Ah! My Goddess
Kare Kano

Plus a few randoms like the full color omnibuses for High school of the dead, the two volume collection of Girl Friends, the first book of Urusei Yatsura and some odd books of Maison Ikkoku

I tend to buy in bulk, so when I get something, it'll be like 20+ volumes in a burst.

I also have a few BDs of anime, namely both seasons of Code Geass and Puella Magi Madoka Magika. I also have all English volumes of Spice and Wolf LNs.

» Topomouse on August 30th, 2014, 8:31am

I'm not collector in large volumes of mangas. I just collect mangas I deem worthy and COMPLETED (this is a very important factor) unless the series is dropped due to publisher termination.

Also I'm stingy so I don't like to buy mangas that aren't for a good deal (that aspect has stopped me from carelessly buying unworthy mangas too). Therefore I don't even have 100 volumes. I feel stupid for spending on magazines back then though.

Of course if a manga is out of print, there's more urgency for the need to buy.

How is the question ridiculous?

Haven't bought any manga for years.. I used to own all the Dragonball volumes, and some 30-ish One Piece ones. But yeah, it's inconvenient and expensive to do it nowadays. Though I might've bought some Berserk volumes if I knew it would make Miura Kentaro release new chapters faster dead

I've bought exactly one manga. Only because I couldn't find the full scanlation online. And after I read it, I ended up selling it because it wasn't that good. I've also bought a couple of BL novels. There are a few manga I would buy if they were fully serialized in English, but these are only a handful of my favorites. There's not a big incentive for me to buy manga when I can get it for free.

I'm not an impulse buyer when it comes to manga, but I always, ALWAYS buy whatever my favorite authors come out with, including going through extensive searches for much older, out-of-print works in Japan.

So I basically own everything by URASAWA Naoki, Kawachi Haruka, Okazaki Mari, Ikuemi Ryou, and George Asakura, and a couple of series from a plethora of other different artists that I find interesting.

As for digital comics, I only recently purchased a 4-koma manga by muse-work called "(Together On Top of the Roof) Neko-maki" v1~v2. Surprisingly cheap. The first volume was free, and the second one cost about $1.99. Digital is not as bad as I thought it would be.

I do scanlate, but I always buy one copy for that and an extra for my shelf if I do. I think it's very important to support the creators.

I buy them for my niece and nephew; mostly my niece, as my nephew prefers computer games. I felt robbed when I bought anime sets in my teens and I just prefer to read on my PC.

If you haven't paid £120-£180 for a series with one DVD released every 3 months and then seen the boxset released 3 months after the last DVD for ~£80 and then the flat-pack released 3 months after that, for £20 (the price of one DVD at the time), then you can't spout the "it's too expensive" excuse; <- my experiences with Noir and .Hack//Sign.

I want my niece to understand that stuff costs money, so she either has to wait until birthday/christmas or buy them herself.

Dang, missed the lasst poll. Ah well.
Does paying for the library card count?

Generally though, once I discovered scanlations, I pretty much abandoned official translations for two reasons:
- No or nearly no honorifics and other "cultural adaptations" made by official translators. I much prefer not to miss out on those relationship clues and other things. Far better to have notes in, before or after the manga.
- The only mangas I can buy here are obviously translated into the local language from pre-existing English translations. It shows. Importing English ones is way too expensive for the quality I'd get for it.

I'm thinking about learning Japanese though. Actually read a whole volume of a manga in it with the help of a dictionary and a grammar, though it took me ages. Once I can actually read it more or less fluently I'm planning of buying the books in Japanese. Still, sadly that still leaves me being a leech in regards to Manhua and Manhwa.

I usually stop reading scanlations once the series is being released in English or German, and buy the volumes instead (if it's a series I like).

thread

» scarletrhodelia on September 4th, 2014, 2:33pm

I buy what I've already read and loved at the local comics store and online. I buy things to try at Half-Price books. It's discouraging to collect manga, however, when even a short series that you can read in a day can set you back $40-50. A 20-volume series is a major commitment.

I haven't bought any digital copies. The price is too high compared with the hard copy, and I don't like the idea that I can't just read them in my picture viewer.

As a yaoi fan, it's true that the really good stuff is overlooked in favor of the insipid with bad art. I've become interested in older manga, and that is also next to impossible to find in English editions. If I could hold in my hands a printed copy in English of Banana Bread Pudding or The Poe Family, I'd buy it in a minute.

thread

» voiceintheblue on September 5th, 2014, 4:26pm

I only buy manga that I really REALLY like.. as in, the story has to have a high re-readabilty for me to consider buying it. So far, the only series I've completed collecting is Beauty Pop, and I'm in the middle of collecting Eyeshield 21 and Oresama Teacher.

For the most part, though, I usually look at Half Price or ebay before buying it new. You can save so much buying it used biggrin

And no, I would never buy digital manga (One Punch Man is only released digitally in the US -_-). I've heard horror stories about Amazon deleting your account along with all your digital purchases... I'm not gonna risk going through that.
And besides, scanlations are basically the same thing lol

I like buying physical copies of the manga series I really like. However, collecting all volumes is kind of impractical, so I choose the volumes that I buy.

So far, I have most of the volumes of Bleach (Soul Society Arc), the last volumes of Lovely Complex and Ouran High School Host Club, a couple of Ghost Hunt, and all the volumes (so far) After School Charisma.

As for digital manga, I never tried it and never will. I don't like the idea of not being able to read them when I'm offline.

I mostly buy stuff which I like (so only after having read the scanlations). Started buying in 2013 and own 140 volumes now, with another 45 volumes being shipped.
Buying them from Japan, cause they cost are cheaper than in my country (3,3 Euros for a volume + 1,3 Euros for the shipping (on average) [buying 10-20 at once helps keep the shipping cost low, if one can wait, if not... SAL takes 2 weeks and costs like 50 cent more per volume]), which is cheaper than the 7 Euros here (long ago they costed only 5 Euros), and the creator gets more out of it.

My small collection includes (counting shipping and ordered stuff)
Angel Sanctuary 1-20/20
King of Thorns (actually this is the only exception, i've seen the movie, but havent read it) 1-6/6
Hunter x Hunter 1-32/32
World Embryo 1-11/11
Darren Shan (nor sure why i bought this one anymore) 1-12/12
Arago 1-9/9
Enigma 1-7/7
Alive: Saishuu Shinkateki Shounen 1,2,7,8,10,11,15,17,19/21
Akuma no Elevator 1/1
Darker Then Black 1-4
Magi 1-22/23, 1-4/4

I used to buy a little bit of manga every now and then.
I would go to Borders and browse their manga section for something.
Occasionally they'd have sales where if you buy two you get a third one free, so that's when I would usually try and find something interesting and pick up a few volumes.

That being said, I haven't bought manga in... probably about 5 years.

Anyway, my collection is as follows:

"Et Cetera" vol. 1
"Eureka Seven" vol. 5
"FLCL" vol. 1-2
"Genshiken" vol. 1-2
"Initial D" vol. 2, vol. 3
"Jing: King of Bandits" vol. 1-5
"Jjang" (a.k.a. "The Boss") [manwha] vol. 1-2
"Lagoon Engine" vol. 1
"School Rumble" vol. 1
"STONe" vol. 1-2

I also used to own a copy of Initial D vol. 1, and Eureka Seven vol. 1 but I sold both of them on ebay a while ago.
The same goes for another manga, named "Remote", which I collected all 10 volumes of. Despite liking the manga, I read it once and was just kind of done with it, so I ended up selling it on ebay for a pretty good amount, since they were in really good condition. smile

Anyway, I don't have much interest in collecting manga at this point in my life, being totally broke. Perhaps someday in the future.

» steaiii on September 7th, 2014, 8:54pm

I probably spend about 50 to 100 bucks on manga a month... which isn't very much now that I think about it... the low number mostly has to do with Barnes and Noble being far away and BAM! not letting me have my discount if I order books they don't have. (if BAM! has it online, why can't the store just order a copy and sell it to me normally like Barnes and Noble does? =_=; )

my manga buying habits have increased quite a bit since I got out of college... during college I was broke, so it couldn't be helped, but now that I have a good job...

Though I will only buy manga that I've already read online, If it's good enough to be on my updates/read list on this site, then I usually buy it.

My current manga buying series are: Ao no Exorcist, Gangsta, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Kami-sama hajimemashita, Until Death Do Us Part, Vinland Saga, Reimei no Arcana, Magi, and InuYasha

I have all of YuYu Hakusho and all but the last 2 volumes of Baby and Me (they're out of print so it was hard) and that short series Rabbit Doubt. oh and I have all of Black Bird

I'm thinking of picking up BTOOOM! and Vagabond too... if I can finish some of the completed series.
I'm probably biting off more than I can chew, but most of those are monthly releases anyway...
