Manga that teaches you something. Anything. History, language, culture, math, science, pickpocketing, critical thinking, lying, love, tricking people etc., etc. Whatever no matter how crazy. I was just thinking it would be great to learn something while wasting away my studying hours on manga. This way we won't feel so guilty  .

PLEASE, Follow these Rules/Guidelines when suggesting or commenting on the validity of a title we already have on the list. Guidelines to Follow:

 1. What is the mangas intent? Is it Educational?
 2. Coming Soon!

As always, I'm open to suggestions!!!!!!!!!!

The few manga I have read will have a little * by them & as I can only have an opinion about what I've read, you can check my lists to see up to where I've read. Anything that happens after that I can't guarantee is educational. I haven't read most of these so I can't be sure of the list's accuracy. But if you have, pls leave a comment on the thread telling us if it is or isn't educational or just leave another suggestion! ;)

WARNING: Don't forget that (a)most authors employ the use of artistic license, and (b)because it's manga and not a certified course the accuracy of the info is questionable!!!

Oh, I'm with you on this! ^^ Educational manga is such fun.

For history:
Access Powers Hetalia, which is about (mostly) male moe-tans of the different nations and their relationships. It's a gag manga for the most part, but the mangaka uses history and national stereotypes for most of the jokes.

The classic shoujo Rose of Versailles does simplify some things about Marie Antoinette's life, but most of it is based on fact.

The seinen romance Emma is very historically accurate for a manga. It's about a maid in the Victorian period and it isn't fetishy at all! (Unless you're like me and just have a fetish for Victorian stuff in general.)

For more recent history there's the shoujos Cipher and its spinoff Alexandrite. They were made in the 80s and show it extremely. You can learn a lot about 80s fashion and music from it.

For math and science:
IS (Intersexuality) is a josei manga about intersexuality, when a person is born neither exactly male nor female. It gets a little preachy and the art isn't fantastic, but it is emotional and interesting.

No Starch Press makes a lot of different manga on different subjects in math and science.

For literature:
There's an OEL manga adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. (Actually, there are three, but avoid the one done with Slayers characters and the weird one set in the future.) I've read it. It cuts out some parts and the art isn't fantastic (it seems to be inspired by the 70s style), but it's word-for-word in most parts and not bad for someone being introduced to the play.

For other things:
The great shoujo classic Swan is about ballet. Really about ballet. You can learn a lot about the art form from it.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is about modern Japanese culture, including the darker parts. It's hilarious besides.

The Korean company YKids puts out educational manga on all sorts of topics, from math and science to classic literature.

There's also the Manga Sutra, which is a how-to guide for exactly what you think it is.

I hesitate to say anything about it, because the fact that it gets translated at snail's pace is almost entirely my fault. But Jinja no Susume is quite interesting in that you learn about some more everyday aspects of Shinto and the people who work in that environment. (Something wer're really not spoiled with. Trying to research the background for this stuff takes ages, as little info is even available in Japanese, let alone translated, on the web.)

I wouldn't call it an educational manga, though. But it is a good manga that also happens to be educational.

Futari Ecchi - I haven't read much of it. It is supposed to be a sex education course for couples. But there's no need to make it so long? 🙄 There's something about sex and society too.
Kinou Nani Tabeta? - about food
Bartender - about drinks
Wild Life - about animals and some veterinary medicine

Hikaru No go. 😃 I learned how to play the Japanese board game Go from it. Not to mention its really good.

Also, Historie has some fact, although how much is unsure... Most of the dates and stuff are right, as are the myths, but I wouldn't trust much else.

Oishinbo is another one about food, specifically Japanese I believe.

Short Cuts: Japanese culture satire, specifically about ko-gals. Really awesome. The jokes are definitely best understood if you have a good knowledge about Japanese culture, but there's also notes at the end of the chapter to help you out.
