I'm looking for a series with surreal undertones and character growth/development (not just wacky/weird antics). Few examples of my favorites...
Oyasumi Punpun / everything else by Asano Inio
Homunculus
Himizu / Ciguatera
I'm fine with any genre is fine as long as it's good.

Maybe Plastic Girl (FURUYA Usamaru). But it's short.
Music of Marie is longer. But I am still trying to figure out what it's about.

Any manga from Ooshima Yumiko, though she mostly creates short stories. Check out "Summertime"

Black & White (and any work by Taiyo Matsumoto at that)
Journey to the End of the World
Dead End
Screw-Style
Human Clock
Red Colored Elegy
That should be enough to get you going. Most of the other suggestions in this thread are great too.

Thanks for the suggestions... Unfortunately I've already read the majority of these series.
I prefer the types of series that start out "normal" and then descend into a surreal haze rather than merely wacky series. Wacky is fun sometimes, but I have a thing for the psychological dark decent into madness ...
Also, I really have no preference for genre anything is fine.
Any more suggestions

How about Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show is horror, gory, really messed up and absolutely NOT for the young, might even offend, anything by Suehiro Marou is good, if you are not squeamish or a kid

Maybe Narutaru? I don't know if you can say it's a good manga, but at least it starts as "normal" if I remember correctly (it has been so long since I read it).

Nijigahara Holograph
Anything and everything by Matsumoto Jiro
Itsumo Misora
Majo
I like recommendating manga. Now I'm tired. If I don't finish the list, I always say I'll come add more later, but I always fail to show up for the second time.
I'll list more some other time.
