I'm looking for a manga that is:

...SHOUJO.
...At least 10 volumes long ('epic' in terms of length).
...At least partly scanlated.
...If not completely scanlated, is still being scanlated, i.e. NOT discontinued/abandoned.
...Began in the period from 1970-1995.
...NOTHING LATER THAN 1995, PLEASE.

Examples: Crystal Lord Opera, Orpheus no Mado, Bride of Deimos, Ouke no Monshou, From Eroica With Love, Glass Mask, Attention Students!, Pygmalio and Patalliro!.

I could just browse the shoujo category, but the problem is, there are TONS of manga and they aren't sorted by length! So while I can find classics, I can't, say, tell the one-shots and few-volume stories apart from the epics.

Please help!

Banana Fish - 19 volumes. 1986
Angel Sanctuary - 20 volumes. 1995
Bad bloodZetsuaiBronze - Together make 20 volumes. 1992, 1989 and 1992
Fushigi Yuugi 18 volumes. 1992.
X - 18 volumes. 1991

Classic non-shoujo epics which I think girls can also love. (My proof being that I am a girl and I love them, bigrazz)
Sanctuary - 14 volumes. 1990
Rurouni Kenshin - 28 volumes. 1994
Akagi - 24 volumes. 1991

I know you said 1995 was the cut off but these are worth trying.
Let Dai - 15 volumes. 1998
Fruits Basket - 23 volumes. 1998
[m]|Full Metal Panic! (novel)[/m] - 22 volumes. 1998
Shounen Mahoushi - 13 volumes. 1996
E's - 16 volumes. 1997
Yasha - 12 volumes. 1996
Koori no Mamono no Monogatari - 24 volumes. 1996

I listed the number of volumes currently in print, some of these are still ongoing. Since you didn't mention specific genres besides shoujo I just added all the ones I knew, plus a few extra outside out you criteria but worth looking at. Hope this helps.

@CuthienSilmeriel, YOU ROCK!

I completely agree with your mention of Banana Fish! One of the greatest epics ever! Lol, I can't believe I forgot to mention it... Clearly it was such an eighties manga! (The jeans - the style - the HAIR!)

One question about Shounen Mahoushi... It says it's out of print, but were all 13 volumes printed in English before it went out of print? Because then, I can try to track them down through second-hand sellers... I sure want to read this! But if it was never completed and there's no chance of it ever being completed, then maybe I won't start... sad

I should probably add another requirement to my list - at least partly scanlated AND not discontinued/abandoned. biggrin

Akagi was also recommended to me by a dear B-U friend, but I (shamefully) never got around to reading it. Clearly, the time is now! Thanks so much for reminding me!

And probably should give Fushighi Yuugi a try, lol. It seems like everyone else has read it, but I haven't... Thanks for listing that as well!

RG Veda - Barely makes it at 10 volumes.
Crystal Dragon
Hakushaku Cain Series - Count Cain + Godchild makes 13 volumes total. Count Cain (the prequel) was started in 1992, so I think it should be fine - even though the year of release for Godchild is 2001.
Basara
Kanata Kara
Versailles no Bara
Kaguya Hime
Ao no Fuuin
Seimaden - I personally hated this - but, who knows...you might feel differently.
Hana yori Dango
Rasen no Kakera
Yakumo Tatsu - Very interesting. If only the scans came out faster...
Aka-chan to Boku - Cute and adorable - especially if you like children.
Fredward-shi no Ahiru - Surprisingly insightful, despite the apparently childish theme. But there are only 9 volumes...
Dragon Kishidan
Doubutsu no Oishasan - Better not eat or drink while reading this - it's just that funny!
Zangekikan
Kaze to Ki no Uta
Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru - This is josei, though...

Btw - except for the titles I've remarked on especially, I haven't read any of the others - so I can't really guarantee whether or not they're worth the effort.

About Shounen Mahoushi (which was published in English under the name "The Young Magician") - while earlier volumes are out-of-print, the later ones are still available (according to Amazon). And yes, all 13 volumes were published before CMX went out of business.

By the way - if you like Akagi, be sure to try out Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji as well. The year is 1996, but it's a really good story by the same author as Akagi. A word of warning, though; scanlations begin from the 14th volume. You'll have to watch the anime to see the beginning of the story. A similar situation applies to Akagi.

I don't want to sound bossy, but I think this is one manga you can do without reading. It's a really stupid, annoying, melodramatic story -and the main couple's romance is the most irritating relationship I've ever had the misfortune of coming across in any manga mad

Please Save My Earth 1987. I seriously can't recommend this enough. It's AMAZING.
For the Sake of the Rose 1992. Really good. smile
Princess 1995. Truly EPIC at 31 volumes. The Scanalations are all up to date, but the series itself is on a hiatus.

Not exactly what you want (didn't fulfill all of your categories) but super close;
Zashiki Onna 1992. Honestly, this isn't shoujo, but it's like the classic of all classics in the horror category, so you need to read it. smile
Tokyo Crazy Paradise 1996, but It's amazing. smile
Ashita no Ousama 1996, but it is a LOT like Glass Mask.
Mars 1996, but... it made me cry. Therefore, I'm suggesting it.

Thanks, I try, lol. Banana Fish is so 80s, especially with the torn jeans and the hair. It's my favourite manga so i recommend it whenever I can, lol.

Shounen Mahoushi is out of print in English since CMX went bust. As Calstine said, they published all13 volumes. You can get all 13 volumes easily enough. There are no more volumes available in Japan, but I live in hope.

You can read Akagi from chapter 1. I did see the anime first but since than I have read the manga and it has definitely been scanlated from the first chapter onwards.

As for Fushigi Yuugi, well I loved the first part of the story (though this was a few years back so can't really remember it now) Anyway, I loved it until about volume 14, when is got a little silly. It is a "love at first sight" kinda deal, so if you like drawn out romances you might not like it. But if you like a nice sweet, slightly dramatic but not really emo, romance then I say read it. I intend to finish it one day because by most reports Genbu Kaiden is better.

I agreed with the Count Cain series, I can't believe I forgot that.

YAY ALL THESE EPICS!!!!11!!1 You are epic!

Looks like Shounen Mahoushi will be added to my Christmas manga list! (Because no one else buys me manga for Christmas... lol.)

COMPLETE AGREEMENT about Ashita no Ousama. One of my all-time faves ever.

I am very, very happy that the amazing calstine and the lovely CuthienSilmeriel and the sweet Dragonfiremule went through the effort of looking up all that old manga and listing it with actual dates, comments and reviews! How kind of you all! I really appreciate it. smile

Oh god, I love this request.

Cipher (1985)
Alexandrite (1991),
Marmalade Boy: 1992
Miriam: 1983
Yokohama Monogatari: 1980
Moon Child: 1988
(Damn, already recced) Kaguya Hime: 1993 (this looks discontinued, since I've been waiting for updates quite a while.)
Swan: 1976

Some of these are a little lacking in length, but they're all completely scanlated w/ the exception of Kaguya Hime and Swan (which CMX licensed, but I'm not sure if it's completely published). smile

Found another one - Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori (1995 , 28 volumes). But I must warn you that a lot of people have criticized this manga (haven't read it myself - so I can't confirm that) . If you like romantic melodrama, though, this should be worth a shot smile

About Kaguya Hime - the scanlators insist they haven't dropped it. But Dragon Voice is a very slow group, so even if they do continue the project, I doubt they'll ever actually get to finish the remaining 22 volumes...

i just recently bought the young magician and researched online it seems like there are 14 volumes o_o but buying it in english v1 - 13 was really hard to find especially since cmx closed down.

also released by cmx unfortunately not complete because =_= they closed down was musashi #9 http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6485 agent o_o who looks extremely handsome as a male and =_= gorgeous as female and action packed and cool (not like james bond) musashi #9 doesn't uses stupid unrealistic devices. i really suck at summarizing so read the summary from the information page on manga updates
