REMEMBER NO ECCHI AND HAREM

I highly recommend watching Kemono no Souja Erin (The Beast Player Erin). It's a pretty great anime, but keep in mind it's more slice-of-life than action: slow paced, little to no romance, and quite long (50 episodes). The companion here is an animal/monster, and not the kind that talks or acts like a human, as in other anime. It has realistic behavior, which is very refreshing.

How about:
Katana: partner for male MC shows in later chapters.. not exactly partner for all volumes but they have chemistry.
Op: Yoake Itaru no Iro no Nai Hibi: non BL manga by BL mangaka. My new favorite. There's only three chapters for now (Chapter 3d actually) and it already looks very promising.
Grainerie: also non BL manga by BL mangaka. Handsome male leads, nice story. Downside: chapter is super short and only released monthly.
Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi: since you're okay with Nyanko-sensei in Natsume Yuujinchou, maybe this one also fits your taste. I used to dislike isekai story but this one is unique and different from the common isekai story 🙂
Kiseijuu: not really fitting since the partner for male MC is residing in his right hand (partner is a parasite), but it has what you're looking for (adventure, death, gore, etc).
Konjiki no Gash!!: a good fun read although it's not everyone's favorite from the start.

About mdzs I came in because of the art style and falled in luv with it of the story line and animation...it was very eye catching for me.... so I m not against bl but watch rather rarely except mdzs(even read the light novel cuz I wanted to know the story but I dnt regret it)
