Okay, I admit it, I'm a sucker for love stories.
However, it always really bothers me when in shoujo manga the main female character is ditsy and lightheaded, and it's proving to be difficult to find some romance/shoujo with a unique, not exactly girly, female lead.
A few of the ones I liked include Skip Beat! and Ingènuo
One thing that commonly stops me from reading a manga is the art style with the huge eyes and everything looking obscenely girly, so please no suggestions with such.
Thanks

not exactly sure about that "not exactly girly," part, but other than that - unique female lead, not ditsy, lightheaded, no huge eyes etc...fits 'em:
Akagami no Shirayukihime should fit pretty well
Akatsuki no Yona might fit sometime in the future, cuz so far love story isn't the main um topic, more like an undercurrent that's developing, but she's definitely a great female character
i sort of also want to say Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden & Hatenkou Yuugi but maybe not, cuz while they are unique-ish FYGK might be no so much u-ish but HY love is yet to have a main part, kind of like with AnY...see for yourself
gah, unique is rare (duh), it's easier with strong or smt female leads, got a bit more of those than unique
aaah, nope, i got one more Rec - Kimi ga Naita Hi even thou it has only 4 chaps & will break your heart, it's unique
that's it, i'm out of unique-ish female leads, kinda shocked myself how little there are...it'd really be easier if you tried strong (mentally & maybe physically) etc leads, cuz for example Anatolia Story 's Yuri isn't exactly unique-ish but she's definitely great & without all those ditsy, huge eyes etc

Basara - Girl takes over her brother's role and becomes a revolutionary leader. She goes on a quest to find allies, which of course leads to lots of fighting, and even falls in love... with her mortal enemy without realizing it.
Saver - Non-idealistic, mostly stoic. Physically strong sword-wielding heroine. Does not go out of her way to save everyone if it means a risk to herself. Refuses to become anyone's possession, even the male love interest! Flaws of this manhwa would be the lack of romance and the confusing/weak plot.
Talking About... (Josei) - There are three main female protagonists. They're all very different from each other, but are friends. My favorite is Amber. She's basically a successful careerwoman and a player. Has no urge to marry and settle down. She uses men for one-night stands and moves on.
Hiiro no Isu - Female fighter searches for childhood friend. I don't remember much about this manga, but I do remember the heroine being "refreshing."
Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang - Heroine is some sort of assassin/mercenary, but she's a very learnéd woman. She charms the main guy with her eloquence and music.
Kuragehime (Josei) - Lead is a nerdy NEET (no pursuing education, employment or training) with an obsession for jellyfish.
Cheese in the Trap (Josei) - She's a very perceptive person, which causes her to over-analyze at times. Of course, because of this, she sees through a popular upperclassman's good guy persona. Other than that, she's a very normal slice-of-life heroine actually. Painfully slow romance, but the characters in this are generally mature and rational. Viva college students!
Shoujo-y plotlines (not necessarily a bad thing):
3D Kanojo - It's actually a male lead, but the main girl in this is pretty different. She's basically a pretty girl who's popular with boys and hated by other girls. She doesn't care what people think of her.
Warau Kanoko-sama and the sequel Koi Dano Ai Dano - Average looking, but extremely observant and rather cynical. Schemes a lot. Not used to having friends, and dense when it comes to love though (much to the main guy's frustration, lol).
The Kidnapping of Minja Jo's Boyfriend - Female lead is a delinquent. In other mangas, she would normally be the villain or other woman. Basic premise, she kidnaps the boyfriend of her long time rival to make her rival submit.
