Large doses of tragedy.... don't want anything like Attack on Titan or Berserk

thankyou for the results. Unfortunately read/reading all of those except for Dorohedoro but as most of you said Id is a perfect example of what i'm looking for, same for Tower of God. Ares im reading but havent really finished.... kinda got bummed about a certain spear guy ;-;. Ubel Blatt is another really good example as well. Rain doesnt really have much adventuring yet(they barely ever go anywhere, and it's always with a huge army), but it is really good.

anyway responses are really good so far, thankyou. really hoping there are a few more out there that meet the requirements XD. running out of translated manga is really giving me the need to learn japanese T_T


EDIT: almost forgot Immortal Regis and Cavalier of the Abyss. as for these ive read the former and am reading the latter.... personally i'd say the former is probably in my top 10, but cavalier of the abyss, while not bad, is nowhere close to the same level. anyway long story short they both work, tho i'd really like to see a protag that explores a bit more. the former he just kinda got dragged around then everything ended, and the latter does explore a bit, but not as much as i'd like ^^

in case other people make use of this list, i should mention one i found called Drifters that fits in quite well. so far it's only 30 chaps but they have a pretty unique setting, and it looks like using environmental advantage will come up pretty soon since they covered biological and basic tactics already. Additionally there are some supernatural powers and demi-human races, and the protagonist is a slightly unstable beast.

not to mention it's pretty cool to see the legends of history all gathered together.... overall epic.

now as for the last 4 already read/reading 3x3 kakkaishi and black god, and will definitely give nausicaa a shot.

hmm didnt take nearly as long as i hoped to clear all of those out...... didnt help that a few of the ones i thought i didnt read i actually already finished x.x.

gotta say nausicaa was a better story than i thought it'd be, quite good imo once you get past the questionable scan quality.

I started writing a reply before, but my comp died 3/4 of the way through and lost it, thus was too demotivated to type it out again XD but I thought I'd give it another go. Though I will warn you I don't know much about incomplete endings, as some of these I haven't finished. Not cause they're bad, just cause its a bad habit I have >_>

Mushishi- Has supernatural elements, but no powers as such...I think.

Music of marie- not classified as adventure though, and his super power isn't very showy.
Akaboshi - ibun suikoden
Blue dragon - ral grado-the scenery is mainly grassy plains though.
Saiyuki-I will warn that this one's demographic changes all the ruddy time. One day I'll write a rec and it says shoujo and the next its classified as shounen. So apparently they compromised because it currently shows the first one as shounen but its sequels as shoujo XD
Shuna no tabi- by Hayao Miyazaki who did Nausicaa. Mc doesn't have a super power, but there are supernatural elements to it.
Tsubasa reservoir chronicles-Its not one world, its multiple worlds which they travel to.
Shin angyo onshi
Desert coral-Its not particularly diverse though, just a fantasy desert.
+Anima-only thing is I seem to remember the ending being slightly out of place, not incomplete, but not 100% satisfying.

Not completed:
Land of lions only thing they miss out is supernatural elements, but it has heightened senses and their are those sorts of abilities in some people, though more subtle than most series. Its the first I thought of what reading 'diverse areas.' That's the official page, think you have to log in to read it on that now.

Guin saga it has tragic elements to it and quite a heavy atmosphere but the plot and locations are distinct.
Doubutsu no kuni- though I warn you it is really tragic.
Densetsu no Yuusha no densetsu though the scenery isn't particularly distinct, thus far its just generic woods, towns and grasslands.
Seiketsu no haguruma
Spice and wolf-this has the bonus human/non-human relationship you're after.
Witch hunter
Nanatsu no taizai

Natsunokumo-its in a video game though, does that count? not sure, distinct locations though and the mc has serious fire power.
Kimi no kakera -very distinct location but the protag is pretty whiney. Thing is its more or less a pair and one of them complains a lot and the other ones pretty laid back. Strangely enough I don't hate the complaining one either, usually I would, but it has a certain charm about it.
Beyond the beyond

Not scanned much but if you want to see the stories in full you could watch the completed animes, both have distinct and diverse locations:
Kemono no souja-she has an ability but its not supernatural
Seirei no moribito-side character has the supernatural ability, she's just a kick ass fighter.
